I just found out this song was made to mock Oasis, after Oasis played as support for REM at Slane Castle in Ireland 1 year earlier, and Stipe had a bad opinion about them
Slane Castle was the best gig I ever went to.. Oasis were mad. Oasis were the best of the 90s in ways that a rich angst ridden yank would never understand. Live forever.
@@MarkSmith-hu5kd Oasis were the most overhyped band of the 90's. All they had were a few catchy ballads that drunk people loved to sing along to. No style or substance to their music. See ya, don't want to be you Lunch meat, Pond scum
Ha credit to Stipe! I can like some Oasis songs OK but overall I think they're overrated, C-tier; their songwriting is not very good, they have very few tricks in their songs! Noel Gallagher's Flying Birds has way more going for it; I've grown to think Liam was just dead weight the whole time. Also I'm just discovering this album; I've always liked/respected REM but this is the first album that's really _clicking_ with me. Before I scrolled down to the comments I was thinking "this sounds like a Blur song via the midwestern US"
This was left over from Monster... I appreciated REM, debated em VS U2 back a hundred years ago. U2 won that easily over time, but I miss these dude's.. GREEN anmd Documenbt still my shit, and this album of course
Yes, kind of. This record was partly recorded while they did their massive monster tour. Hence, why this whole album has a raw sound and still a bit of that live vibe to it. Love it, it's a great long player.

''Practice my T-Rex moves and make the scene', Michael Stipe wrote this about 1970s Glam after visiting a club in New York with a Glam Rock theme.. REM had previously sang 20th Century Boy live.
"Cigarettes and Alcohol" uses a direct riff from T-Rex. "Teach the world to sing" is a reference to Oasis' "Shakermaker" borrowing much from "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" from The New Seekers, and "Supersonic" is thrown in.

First time I heard this song was at the PNC Art Center during the Monster tour. I turn to my friend and go what the hell is this, still one of the best songs I ever heard live.
It was written during the Monster Tour, so it could be. They also performed it during the VMAs on MTV in 1995, and that was the first time I'd heard it. I was truly floored.
