- With Zach Hyman on pace for 59 goals this season, does the Oilers forward need to be included in the conversation as one of the NHL's elite goal-scorers? How much credit does Connor McDavid deserve for Hyman's scoring jump this year? That's Hockey weighs in.

Couldn't be happier as an Oilers fan having Zach in a core role
Hyman is the type of versatile player THAT every team needs in the NHL. He's not a super elite player , but he takes some of the work load off of the super elite players with whom he plays with by knowing where to be and when to be to either score or get the puck to the super elite player to score .
Leafs didn’t eye value.
RNH played with mcdavid last year...result 50+ goals. RNH doesn't play with mcdavid this year, result on pace for 22 goals. Same thing for hyman. It's called the mcdavid bump. I hope hyman does better in the playoffs this year than last year. last year he was no where to be found. this year, playing with mcdavid (and power play), hyman should do better.
Best contract in the league at the moment.
Debatable. Nichushkin’s is slightly higher at $6.1M but he’s also signed through 2030. Both are phenomenal contracts and I’d say both front offices hit the jackpot signing those guys at those salaries.
EDIT: I give the Val contract the edge because the Avs snagged him from a division rival 😂
@@thenextgreat8652 Not sure if Nichushkin's contract is a good comparison. At this moment,
1) Hyman is just 1 goal shy of Nichushkin's TOTAL points
2) Hyman probably will score more than 52 goals this year which is more than Nickushkin's highest seasonal point total EVER.
I think Hyman won on this one.
@@tamatb Val was out for two months in the player assistance program and his PPG of 1.09 is better than Hyman’s 1.03. So you could debate that Hyman is more valuable because he’s been more available but I’m not trying to say either is better than the other. Just saying that when on the ice, they’re both very similar in stats which is why the contracts are both steals because each are easily worth $8M+ if they were an FA.
@@thenextgreat8652 Val is 0.06 PPG better which works out to be 5% better, but he is playing more than 2 minutes per game more than Hyman, which is more than 10% more TOI. So Hyman would be slightly better in point per 60. Another stat that Hyman is way better is +/-. I know this stat is not as accurate, but +30 vs +10? Even Val plays 20 more games, he will be +15. Now consider all factors, slightly better point per 60, much better +/-, 10% cheaper contract and plays 20 more games, the answer is obvious.
@@thenextgreat8652 [... Val ... PPG of 1.09 is better than Hyman’s 1.03 ...]
If you want to do the per game basis, then here is a curve ball. They are getting paid the same per year (more or less), but one player is not available some of the time, while the other is constantly available.
Which means he is getting paid more per game ... or ... hmm ... I would love to have his job!! 🤣🤣😂😂
From a fan who watches all the Oiler games what makes the Hyman/McDavid/Nugent-Hopkins line so effective in my opinion, is the puck rarely dies on any of thier sticks, and they are great and winning board battles
100%
That's what haters don't like about the Oilers, like Gretzky, McDavid lifts everyone's game around him.
That's not why people hate Oilers. It's because you got four 1st OA picks. In a span of like 6 years. McDavid is generational he should be uplifting the entire team.
Actually he doesn't. There is a catastrophically long list of players who've played with him that he hasn't lifted.
McDavid just goes out an plays his game and plays one way. He doesn't adjust his game or adapt to his linemates abilities or deficiencies. You either keep up and get in position or you fail.
There are other great players throughout the history of the league that can speed up, or slow down their game. Adjust their game to make their line mates more effective. McDavid isn't one of them.
Zack is perhaps one of the best free agent signings in recent NHL history His impact on the Oilers is massive.
Hyman fits well in there, he`s a constant threat around the net. Working hard, also on the fore-check and he`s great on the rush.
His anticipation is good, he`s creating a lot of room for other players.
He has a career year, but the Oilers are past a point where that matters. Last year it was RNH on a heater, nobody cares about it today.
The Oilers must win a cup, otherwise it`s all for nothing.
The past couple weeks with the amount he’s scored I’ve been wondering if McDavid, Drai and Nuge sat him down and were like “bro, Mathew’s is in a slump. We’re going to get you the scoring title this year” lol
I loved Hyman when he was on the Leafs. I think he was the most under rated player on the team. I'm glad to see that he's doing well
The biggest mistake Dubas ever made
2nd in the league in goals and 161st in salary? That's fucking insane 🤯 Bro's probably hitting 60 goals too! I'd kill myself if I was a Leafs fan lmao
Well he wouldn't be 2nd in goals in any other team. McD gives him ~15-20 "extra" goals per year...
For years they've been saying, looking for a forward to play with McDavid. They get a player, and they say it's because he's playing with the best.
Love the Knights jersey! And yes Hyman was definitely a steal from the leafs
Every Leafs fan knew how good he was except the one guy that pulled the strings DUBAS 🤬💔
Hyman is a great power forward he and McDavid work good together. Playmakers need a goal scorer and goal scores need playmakers. Just ask Matthew’s his goal production goes down when Marner is hurt or is not on his line. McDavid and McKinnon are the only ones that are great at both. 😮
It's not even the mcdavid affect he literally played with guys like mitch marner, auston matthews, William nylander he is in the right place at the right time right now to flourish and that's what is happening
The Hyman Effect inflates McD’s apples, one could say.
I could put up 60 points a season playing beside McDavid. Hyman is good, not great, he’s figured out how to be in the right place at the right time playing with the greatest player to ever play.
Right. Hyman wouldn't score even 40 in any other team (or line). That said Hyman fits perfectly with McD.
@@johnj8069 Exactly, every player has a purpose and it works. Didn’t Nugent-Hopkins do the same thing last year?.
The volume is very low
Remember folks jonathon cheechoo scored 50 playing with jumbo joe. But hymen is much better than cheechoo but McDavid is a huge factor even if its jusy the attention he draws
Gino Gino Gino... it's all mcdavid affect. same thing happened to ryan nugent hopkins last year 50+ goals playin with mcdavid.
Do announcers giggle when they say his name?
Hyman is not getting 50 elsewhere. With that said. Hes still scoring. He just happens to be the PERFECT fit. That in itself is rare. There are other Oilers and none of them succeeded as McDavids linemate with that success except Leon, and Leon can roll by himself quite good. He won the MVP of the league due to McDavid injury.
Amazing the leafs let him go? Well, on second thoughts, given the stupidity of leaf management, not so amazing.
Man. Leafs could sure use a guy like that.
We have a Hyman at home. His name is IS BeRTiZZI.
Fellas, face the facts Hymen is making us all re-value Mathews goal scoring propaganda stories in todays NHL....there are a LOT OF 50 GOAL SCORERS NOW.
Matthews making 12 million.. Hyman 5.4 ..
Merica 😂
I think he did the smart thing and just did net front drills all summer or something. His finish around the net is considerably better this season than it has been in the past. He only scored 36 last year, but people forget that that was like 15 goals below what was expected; he got robbed by goalies more than any player I've ever seen. He also had several goals called back on goalie interference reviews.
Dubas just traded jake guentzel... smh
Lol 59? Why not 60 goals. Such a odd number
46(goals currently)/63( games played to date) *82 ( games in season)= 59.87 goals projected. Grade 1 math buddy boyo. Anything past .5 should be rounded up. So it should be 60 goals .
@MustyBastard He can get a maximum of 81 games this season, cause he missed one. So, he is projected to score 59.14 goals this season.
@@PK-rq6im I forgot about the missed game. so Ya. 59 is correct
It's called pace.
take ryan nugent hopkins off mcdavid line and guess what? ryan nuggent hopkins doesn't score 50+ goals. same thing with hyman....take him off mcdavid line, and you will see 20-30 goals, max.... just an average player. and worth exactly what you're paying him.
The answer is…NO!!! HE IS NOT!!!
If it's a McDavid effect does that mean Matthews and Marner are garbage ?
That doesn’t even make sense. However, they are not garbage but they are not MVP’s either. The “sports” writers already stole an MVP from McDavid awarding it to an undeserved Matthews…who this year shouldn’t be too 6 or 7 for the Hart. Don’t believe me? Look at his games.
@@oldsingingstudentdougbillf1665 how does it not make sense. If Hyman is only good with the best. Aren't Matthews and Marner the best according to you leafs fans ? 😂😂 His highest goal total was what 27? Lol. Or is it just the leafs that are a garbage team all in all. You can decide which one you want to pick out of those 2 options lmao.
at least mcdavid n hyman play hard at play-offs unlike no show auston play-offs and marner
@@afzalhakeen4941 ahahah enough said.
