Bucks is so right about tackling. Needs simplifying for adjudication, for the fans and for the players, as well as injury prevention will be improved. It's a win-win-win for everyone involved
Bucks is spot on with the Hawks. Last year we came in under the radar, but next year the opposition will be ready. Though i still think we'll end up at least in the top six.
I think that where we are lacking against the really good sides is in the midfield. I’m talking about the top 6 who have at least 3 or 4 genuine A grade midfielders. We saw that difference in the loss to Port. Imo we have two in Day and Newcombe and Meek is on the path, Worpel is close but has been in the system a long time. Our defence was superb last season despite being undersized (we didn’t lose games because of our defence in the run in, quite the opposite). Battle and Barrass will add depth but it’s more the flexibility it will give us. Do we play Sicily forward? Does Lewis return and can he stay fit?Can Day stay fit and reach his peak? Those three questions and Hawthorn developing its midfield depth with improvement from Mackenzie and Ward etc. will tell if and how much Hawthorn improves next season.
Bucks is spot on when it comes to contracts. Signing players for anymore than 5 years is ridiculous. Shorten it, make them accountable and go from there.
The reason contracts are long term is they are able to pay players top salaries and shuffle it all around. You may front end a could have contracts and backend a few other contracts. If all star players were on 2-3 year contracts they won’t fit into the salary cap.
11:10 - "The stand-alones at the moment I just can't see how they can be in the same competition as the aligned teams...from an AFL competition." I take his point, but has anyone told him who competed in the VFL Grand Final this season?
I don't think his point is that the unaligned clubs are no good, rather that that all AFL clubs should have a direct 2nds team that compete against each other. This means that there would be 18 (soon to be 19) teams in that competition without the unaligned clubs. Let's be honest, there is going to be a 20th team in the AFL within a decade to ensure there isn't a team having a bye each week. The VFL had 21 teams this year. If you add in 2 SA teams, 2 WA teams and a Tassie team that makes 26, plus whichever extra follows Tassie. By having fewer 2nds teams Buckley is arguing that you would again concentrate the talent following list size cuts, resulting in a higher level of play and thus, hopefully, a higher caliber of player to potentially end up on an AFL list. I think his idea is also that the 2nds teams would really be reserved for people who are committed to continuing to chase the AFL dream.
Nathan, Loved hearing your point on your junior career making it through the port Adelaide set up. What are both your thoughts on the jmpact of port Adelaide losing the pathway of teams, and the general development of SA talent. So many good players came though the port magpies.
Bucks, love you getting involved with the future of the game and society in general. The keys to the city is Bucks get a modern haircut, take a risk and get something modern fluff fringe :) The best influence is being an influence, You can do this Bucks
The only issue with structuring AA around modern structures is it will change every time the game evolves. The traditional structure makes sense because it is still how teams are named on the team sheet.
From the coach that got rid of Treloar... So families are thrown interstate without regard to extended family support... Players will put severance clauses into their contracts, just like coaches do... Players thrown into systems that they aren't happy with means that they don't thrive, lots of Hogans Fremantle style... Someone will go to the suppreme court with a restraint of trade lawsuit...

good luck with holding the ball...nobody will want to pick up the footy and opposition will just wait and tackle when they do and get a free kick. I understand it needs to be made a simple as possible for umpires but that just wouldnt work in the real world lol
Completely disagree. The umpires, players and, particularly, the fans hate the current interpretation of HTB. It's too inconsistent and leaves players confused and at more risk of injury by continuing tackles that otherwise should already have been blown. We've tried a few different interpretations within the current rules, but none of them have really worked. Time to try something different. Players will adapt, coaches will adapt. Get rid of the prior opportunity rule and watch the game open up. And the best part is that tackling will still be part of the game. It'll just get rid of the scrums.
10:15 sorry bucks but these don't seem fully thought through. I can see the validity but needs more discussion. My thoughts are create 2 way contracts to prop up lists. All new rules need to make game play easier to explain to someone who has never seen the game before. I have made a list of changes that I would be happy to share anytime.
2 way contracts is a great idea. Reduce the list size but have these sorts of arrangements so that you can pick and choose and allow players to go elsewhere for more opportunity.
I would remove the rule that says if the ball goes through the big sticks but touches the post, it’s a behind. If it goes through, it should be a goal. That will remove the need for reviews.
I would change the VFL fixture so that the reserves team ALWAYS plays after the AFL team. Hence, no players not or barely playing all weekend if they are hold outs from the VFL as an emergency, or only playing 15 minutes as a sub. If they only play a tiny bit of a game in the AFL, they still have the opportunity to play VFL. Also no VFL bye rounds. I'm sorry to those who still love the old VFA, but it is dead now - it's been subsumed.
That's not going to happen,.. Too hard to work out which reserves plays who, in rotation, after working out which AFL team plays who, according to travel and rest periods
Removing prior opportunity is ridiculous. A defender gathers the ball 30m out running towards goal. He can't soccer it for a rushed behind (free kick) or out of bounds (free kick) so gathers the ball and turns to find teammate. Bang: tackled, free kick and near certain goal. The defender should actually stand over the ball and wait for someone else to pick it up so HE can then win the free kick. No one wants to see this, like NFL kick receivers actively avoiding the ball in case they touch it and play the rushing players onside.
Bloke inherited a rabble in 2020. Cleaned the team out, finished last and has only improved their ladder position since going backward this year. There’s always a dip year or 2 in rebuilds like the crows partook in. Hawthorn, Richmond, Melbourne etc all saw the same in their times. Let’s see what he can do with a fully fit squad next year.
