Tech Tip: Siri Voiceover (Irritate friends without knowing unlock code for iDevice)

- Today I show you a neat little trick to mess with your friends that have some kind of iDevice.
Siri is enabled on the lockscreen by default, so you can turn settings on and off. this one is particularly irritating.
This is an accessibility setting that is intended for screen reading for those that may have difficulty seeing or reading the screen, but it can turn into a real nightmare if it gets turned on inadvertantly.
The trick is either asking siri to turn it off "Siri, Turn off voiceover"
or navigating by using multiple fingers, touch one, then tap with 2 more fingers, or possibly 3 depending on device and version and such, and through that ordeal end up going to the settings app, then general, then accessibility, and turning off the voiceover option.
If you have an iPhone, iPad, iPod, or any other device using iOS, this is a problem you want to know how to fix!

I'm a bit confused...now did you comment this, if you are blind? Indeed, you can use the speech to text, but you still have to know where it is to press it, unless its just me...
Sorry if this seems rude or offensive. I'm just confused, and curious
I am also a voiceover user myself. Voiceover is a screen reader that turns all visual information into speech so that a blind or visually impaired person can use the iPhone, the iPad and all other Apple products. If you’re wondering how blind people can leave comments, I am using dictation to enter this comment. However, I am able to use the on-screen keyboard with voice-over to enter text. Voice-over speaks everything that you touch so you know what you’re actually touching. However, it doesn’t activate it. In order to activate an item, you double tap with one finger as demonstrated in this video. you May have noticed, that you don’t have to double tap on the item itself. Once voice-over has spoken the name of an item and the little box is visible on that item that you have selected, you can double tap anywhere on the screen.
In order to enter text using the on-screen keyboard with voice-over, you run your finger around the bottom half of the screen where the keyboard is until you hear the letter you want. Once you hear the letter you want, you can then double tap. You could also set up the keyboard so instead of having to double tap each letter, you lift your finger off the screen once you hear the letter you want and it will be entered.That is how I prefer to have my keyboard set up. I hope this description was not too complicated and that it helps you to understand a little more about how voice-over works and how a blind person can use technology. Also, it is not offensive to ask questions if you’re curious about how we as blind people do things. I can’t speak for other people, but I am more than happy to answer questions that anyone may have about how I live life as a blind person as it raises awareness that disabled people are just as capable as our non-disabled peers.

I just found how to make the volume of suggested spellings in email acceptable. 1- slowed speaking rate to the lowest level. 2- selected pitch change. 3- selected phonetics only. I don't always want others close by to know words I'm typing. Now, I'm a happy camper...at least until something else needs adapting to my liking.

Holding the home button down does not do anything
Likely the option to allow siri while locked is disabled. I believe this is now default on newer devices.

What if it had turned on, without doing any of this? I was trying to figure out how to do something, pressed my home button a bit to hard, and it had turned on, and now I can't turn it off because my device say's 'Activation Required" which is currently not working at the moment. Hey, good day.
I have no idea if your problem with this is solved already, or you did a different approach to make the voiceover deactivated, but here's the answer for your question.
Please note that my answer may not be helpful for you because I really don't know what was the whole story before the voiceover was turned on.
To turn it off, you can still ask Siri to turn it off even if you didn't turn it on through Siri.
The second one would be pressing the home button thrice and it should turn off, and for the hardest way to turn voiceover off, you have to turn it off in the settings.
Which is a hard thing to do when you aren't a voiceover user.
Because when voiceover is turned on, all of the gestures you knew, will be replaced with the set of gestures that are designed for voiceover.

☹️ on behalf of the people who HAVE TO USE VoiceOver for an accommodation, thanks SO much for cheapining it down to a party trick!! Btw, your gesture knowledge stinks, the double tap can be done using one hand, or the split tap method.
I certainly meant no ill will, several of my friends had this trick played on them and could not make phone calls or use their phone which caused some serious issues, so I made the video to explain how to turn it off and back on.
I personally do not have any apple products, I haven't the slightest idea how the gestures work, and it has probably changed and improved drastically in the 8 years since I made the video
