  • Elvis interviewed by Mae Boren Axton, a Jacksonville resident and a school teacher, on July 28th, 1955 (could also be from May 12th). Mae would later co-write (with Thomas Durden) Elvis' first #1 hit "Heartbreak Hotel" (RCA).
This is the earliest known interview with Elvis that we have audio of.

So young, so gracious, on the cusp of stardom, all before fame ate him up and spat him out.

I heard an interview with Mae Boren Axton about 30 years ago when she said that this interview with Elvis was actually done before he had started the Florida tour dates and that was the reason he sounded reticent to say how well he had done there--because he hadn't, yet. She said that she had no such qualms about this slight deception and anyway, had thought that he would go down well. I can't verify this but it was on radio London in the UK a few decades back.

Not the typical Elvis smile at all.

The early (mid-1950s) Elvis had a noticeably more nasal sound in addition to his more pronounced Southern accent.

That's right. He was sounding real country --as in the sticks. But there was a transformation. In interviews from early 1957 on he lost that heavy accent. I don't know if he was coached or just noticed it himself and improved his speaking voice. He also used to do lame country-styled blue jokes that were entirely inappropriate. His first Vegas gig exemplified that.

Interesting, I’ve never heard about that before re the blue jokes. Maybe since he bombed in Las Vegas in the 1950s he thought telling risqué jokes would show he’d “grown up” i.e. was now an adult and that would appeal to the older crowd that were that city’s main clientele in that era.

@@hayesman76 That first engagement in Las Vegas was for two weeks in May of 1956. The audiences were not receptive to Elvis. They were older folks and he couldn't establish a rapport with them. That's when he tried to get them to laugh with his naughty cornpone humor. That turned them off even more.

@@timcarr6401 Someone coached him, re his speech. He was told to ALWAYS put the /g/ on the endings of "--ing" words, among other things. It WORKED.

@@timcarr6401 And he said he hated to perform while they were eating. He could hear all the forks and knives scraping, clanging on the plates. The 2nd shows were what he liked. Quite a learning experience had to happen, and it DID!!
