    Ha! Canuckistan! That's funny! I'm their southern neighbor, also known as Dumbfuckistan! That is a fantastic sleep system! The hood is cool too. You could keep it on outside the bags. Most of all, I agree with you about the YKK zippers. That's my main complaint about German kit is the cheap zippers that give out under stress. Fortunately with their flectarn shirts and parkas they also have a snap closure over the zipper.

      LOL :) Awesome!

      @19ghost73 7 лет назад +5

      Hi! No offense - just wondering: What exactly do You mean with "give out under stress"? Do You mean the zipper fails or that the zipper opens up without the using the gliding part? You are aware that the closed zipper of the german standard sleeping bag ("Schlafsack, allgemein II") should open by mere pushing from the inside in case the soldier has to get out very quickly? Just wondering what You mean... I have & use one, given to me by our army, and it is more solid than enough in my world... :-) ATB Gereon

      @logicaredux5205 7 лет назад +3

      19ghost73 - I meant the latter part that the zipper comes apart without the glider. I have to confess sir that it never occurred to me it was designed to do that. I can see the logic in it especially if it comes to treating a wounded soldier. I learned something today! It's just for my purposes it can be annoying. I should also say that when I called it my "main" complaint, I am also saying it was my "only" complaint. Bundeswehr kit is top notch!

    • @logicaredux5205
      @logicaredux5205 7 лет назад +1

      19ghost73 - And I also was referring to the zippers on the clothing. My bag isn't German. I have mainly the shirts, trousers, puptent, etc., which is Bundeswehr surplus.

    • @19ghost73
      @19ghost73 7 лет назад

      You are welcome. The main reason for the quick opening feature is when (during the night) the forward alarm post alerts the sleeping group: You push the bag open in one move, jump in your boots (don't fiddle with the lacing) and in seconds you are in your foxhole and ready to defend.

  • @ajtaylor560
    @ajtaylor560 7 лет назад +2

    Lars we used the same bags summer and winter the cotton liner is like a boa constrictor and most annoying!!! It kept your bag clean when you crawled in with your boots on!! In the summer we would lay on the inner and just lay the outer over you or just lay on both and sweat with the smell of hot canvas plugging your nose! It is the one piece of kit no one complained about carrying. Our rucksack was made with space for it too be secured on. Our wash basin,towel, and other hygiene and shaving went in on top once you stuffed in the bags. If you had to go out to an OP you always took your bags it gets cold at night and before dawn as you know. You will love it!

    • @SurvivalRussia

      Thank you for the constrictor info, and info in general A J!

  • @RCD566

    Hi Lars, we never trusted the valise and always put a heavy duty garbage bag inside. There is a flap inside that has all the info on it. That is the top of the valise and should be pulled up to cover the contents before you use the draw cord around the top. The older systems (pre 90's), came with a black rubber air mattress as part of the kit. That was replced by a therma rest type, self inflating mattress and a Gortex bivi bag was added to the full kit. When I was stationed in Germany, we bought our own Gortex bivi bags and some of us bought U.S. foam sleep mats. They had to be cut down slightly for width and then we put them in the valise around the inside to form a tube that we stuffed everthing into. It made packing up quicker.

    Hi again Lars, just another quick comment to share my experience with this sleep system. Alot of us hated the way it was restricted around the top, so we modified them. We would make a small cut on the inside of the channel where it meets one side of the zipper. Then you can get to the flat green fabric tape inside an cut it, then the top of the bag can open up quite a bit and it's a whole lot more comfortable. We did the same with the liner as well. As for the Dahli Lama hat (as we used to call it), I never used it. With the bag modified it was more comfortable just to wear our wool hats, called "Toques" (Tooks) here. I did alot of winter warfare training when I was in Petawawa and was very happy to have this great bit of kit.

    Greeting from Canuckistan! Best cold weather sleep system I have ever used, been down to minus 48 with this system and slept toasty warm. The hood is amazing and really keeps the moisture from your breath out. I use a rectangular fleece liner instead of the cotton one, more comfortable and allows you to change sleep position (side/back/front) in the bag without moving the outer bags (thanks in part due to the weird closes around the neck design). Thanks for showcasing my favourite bag!

    Bought a down sleeping bag when in my teens and still love it 40 years later. They are still cold in -36 degrees but can get a better sleep than most in the tent. That military Arctic Sleep system may be better since it has that awesome head/neck cover that is very well designed to stay in place and look like it will add a lot of warmth to the system.
    Watched the Russian school video and was amazed at how those kids were focused and got the job done so fast. Makes me wonder why we don't have anything like that here and what would happen if we were invaded.

    • @PlanetRibooted
      @PlanetRibooted 7 лет назад

      I don't mind the winter here that much. It's a very dry cold, so it doesn't feel as miserable as the winters did in Germany when I was a kid. 9 months may have been a bit of an exaggeration but we can get snow anywhere from September to June here. However we also get some very nice days mixed in there. It's like living in the alps.

    The cords are paracord...I'm also CAF so I am very familiar with that kit as I have my own artctic sleep system like that. The trick with the valise (the bag) is to cinch down the outer paracord for initial compression. Then stand it up, rest your knee on the mouth of the valise to get the remaining air to escape. Then cinch off the paracord around the mouth of the valise. Hopefully I'm not telling you anything you already know. And, yes, it is a kick ass sleep system, used it many times, as cold as -40oC, and I barely noticed. Cheers

    • @SurvivalRussia
      @SurvivalRussia  7 лет назад

      The cord on my stuff sack is surely not paracord :) It runs really bad in the channel. I cinched it down fully and applied some foot powder on the cord, and now it run better. I will change it out for paracord, but it's stitched to bag, so it will take a bit of fiddling to remove the original draw string. Anyway, thanks for the info on the bag and your experience with it. So far I have not heard a bad word about this system :)

    I've slept out in -25c on nothing more than a hole in the snow on a ground sheet with this bag and stayed warm. The only thing is that darned hood, the frost starts to build up around your breathing hole and eventually falls down your neck. It was rare for me personally to use both bags on a winter exercise if we were using bell tents , I just used the outer bag with the flannel liner, plenty warm enough,

    If you have access to liquid silicone spray lubricant , spraying the draw cord down well might help with it sliding thru the channel. It waterproofs too. In fact there are silicone tent sprays as well, you may already know about, that may work too. I always use automotive / industrial grade silicone spray made by LPS here in the USA. It will go on wet but then dry leaving a film of slippery silicone.

    Hej there. Picked up a few Swedish poncho button tent quarters. Also decided to try a US Patrol bag as I believe an Arctic bag may be too much bag for my needs. May try the outer bag to have on hand. Found some older M49 Mountain feather/down US bags for $30 USD. Blanched canvas from the sunshine but still useable. Like the wool M45 bags that have the same Canvas cover for many USGI mummy bags. Gonna be a good summer. Skol from Sunny Okanagan BC 30C today. Swimming at the lakeside.

    Hi! Very nice kit indeed. I have one that serves me well even below -30c. Don't forget to hang it when in storage, keeping it compressed will alter it's isolating properties. It seems you are missing the outer goretex shell, which is not that bad and can be bought separately anyway.

    I almost didn't watch to the end before I began liking the German bag... I'd love to see you testing this in -15C.
    About the MSS... It has a cover over the face which I find useful in cold weather.

    • @SurvivalRussia
      @SurvivalRussia  7 лет назад +1

      It's heavy, but I am not sure if it's heavier than the MSS. I will find out as I have that system too. We should have some more cold nights here, s o I will give it try :)

    • @rjstewart
      @rjstewart 7 лет назад +1

      Helsinkipop it's rated to -40 and I can confirm I slept out beside a tent at -37 one night in the system.

    • @Helsinkipop
      @Helsinkipop 7 лет назад +1

      - 40? Then -15C will be like sleeping in an oven :-)

    • @rjstewart
      @rjstewart 7 лет назад +3

      Helsinkipop Survival Russia One thing I'd like to point out, we use this system even in the summer here in Canada! As an Infantry soldier I would be issued ONE of the sleeping bags (I preferred the outer as it's bigger) and a liner in the summer.
      We would build a hooch(shelter) by teaming up with 1 or 2 other people and zipping our ground sheets together and stringing them between trees. We'd put down our air mattresses inside and then the sleeping bag.
      On a warm night you'd sleep inside the liner only with the bag under you. In Canada it's not uncommon to get down to just above freezing on an August night so we'd sleep inside the bag with it unzipped.
      In -15 you still want both bags but might leave one or more unzipped plus we sleep in just our underwear, not even long Johns at that temp.
      NORMALLY in the winter we have a 5 man insulated canvas tent with a coleman lantern and stove running all the time. We almost never used that stupid looking hood either, opting to wear our wool hats instead.
      As for the weight, each man would carry their own sleeping bag and mattress on their rucksack. Typical load out would be 60 lbs with extra cloths etc. Then we'd have on our parkas , wind pants, and white camoflauge over coat and pants. We'd have our firearms and ammo and be wearing snow shoes and THEN two of us would be tied into harnesses on the front of our 300 lb toboggan and one would be pushing and steering from the back with a bar.
      The toboggan contained our tent, stove, lantern, fuel, water, rations, saw, axe, shovel, and anything else we needed as a group. Each section of 8 to 10 had two toboggans and that would leave several soldiers not pulling a toboggan to lead and break trail and to provide defense.

    You should check out some of the heavy winter clothing too. I almost bought a Canadian surplus winter parka a couple months ago in a surplus store near here. Very heavy duty, made to last a very long time, and pretty cheap too. I imagine it would be great for someone who would wear it hard. Same zippers btw. Only problem I had was the good was made big, for helmets I guess.

  • @rjstewart
    @rjstewart 7 лет назад +1

    I thought I'd point out the flap with the label in the stuff sack is supposed to be pulled up and placed to cover the end of the inside of the hole. You should have no problem pulling that completely closed with the issued string too so I'm not sure why it's not working for you.

    • @SurvivalRussia
      @SurvivalRussia  7 лет назад

      I know about the flap :) It's impossible to cinch down the opening. Really strange.

    • @rjstewart
      @rjstewart 7 лет назад

      Survival Russia yea. That is strange. I've used lots of these and never had a problem unless perhaps the string was accidently sewn in place.

    The down bags I expect will rock during the russian winter. When I was young a new zealand company fairy down mad the premier
    sleeping bags in the world for cold weather and expeditions. As boys we new the catalogue of by heart and what ratings the bag,s had. I had the bush line which was -10 rated . It was about 4 or five in the order. The bag the rich kids had was the everest which from memory had a comfort level of - 28 and only weighed between 1.7 and 2.2 KGs. This model actually was the first bag to conquer everest. They also made a two bag system similar to your system but much lighter that was designed for sleeping outside
    at the south pole and was the first sleep system to cross Antarctica from side to side . The price for the everest was about six times the average salary about 40 years ago.
    I would keep these bags for the winter if you are sleeping on your woodsman's bed you will be plenty warm enough even without a fire. Down dosnt like water or lots of sweating body oils ect the down becomes clogged up. You also cant wash down bags as a rule. At the moment I am trying to convince my wife that I should pay $150.00 for a second hand sleeping bag that could be 40 -50 years old.

      Awesome little video. Those russian girls will turn in to intoxicatingly beautiful women, with hard inner shell.
      Back in times of Yugoslavia, this was part of high-school education, at a subject of defence and protection. In elementary school you would only learn about weapons on a Military day holiday, 4th grade and up.
      Today, we have discusions for Slovenia (one of former republics, now its own country) to bring back mandatory military service for men. Most people's argument, whom are for it, is just that: depussyfication of younger generation.

    I have that too, it´s originally from Canada in lack of any even in german Army. I don´t know, if that ever was in use in the German Army as it´s way to heavy and bulky to be carried around. KSK was using an AJUNGILAK one.
    This system is great for dry (!) cold as it has a down filling.
    Didn´t you get the cotton liner that comes with it to keep it clean inside? That liner is pretty easy to wash and protects the sleeping bag from inside. I sell mine for €150 with brand new hood.

    • @SurvivalRussia
      @SurvivalRussia  7 лет назад

      I have the cotton liner. I showed it in the video ;) Looking up the bag on the internet, I could see that only the Canadian Forced and KSK have been using it.

    • @housil
      @housil 7 лет назад +2

      As mentioned before, I´ve never seen it in the German Army and I have no proof it was ever used by the German KSK (I´m from Germany). My very personal opinion is, it´s a myth copied by ebay sellers...

    Rarely did I ever use the liner. Minus 40 outside the tent as long as the Coleman stove was on. On top of inner,boots and parka on, feet inside outer that was drapped over my back and shoulders. Only worry. That fcking stove catching fire because it's flooded. So we threw the book out and filled.lighted that stove INSIDE the tent

    Nice sleeping bags!
    And they actually use down!
    Oh, brass zippers! I wish they'd use them on more things. All I can find are these cheap plastic ones! Bah!
    Too much synthetic stuff now-a-days.
    Thanks for the links!
    The Star movie you linked in an earlier video was great!
    Oh my xD Just watched that video.
    I think it's important to teach knowledge on firearms in school. I hate how the school in the US treat firearms as miniature Hitlers...
    And it's safer for the kids. If your kid has no idea how to handle a firearm because you've "protected" them from firearms, they're more likely to end up killing someone or themselves.

    Hej there. Awesome winter weather gear selections! Looking through surplus sleeping bags and leaning towards something flexible and always liked the goose down feather insulation. Old US intermediate bags, MSS Patrol, BW Tropen, British modular copies of Carinthia. Would like the Canuckistan cold weather although maybe too warm for Coastal climates and Interior BC Summer and Fall hunting camps. Oh well try and gather great info like the reviews you give. Thank you. Skol!

      Have found some Canuck Bivy bags and some Patrol bags on sale for $50. Seems like a good deal. Bivy’s are $70. Looking the older US intermediate cold weather bags US surplus $38 US, borders are still restricted and shipping costs are brutal as I live 20 miles from the WA border. Looking forward to being able to drive down to pick parcels up in Washington again. Skol!

    ? Is the outer sleeping bag taller? So that it would cover your head and Hoodie.
    So the bigger sleeping bag I imagine is taller so you head is still undercover making the head cave for breath and ventilation consideration.
    I have made my own Canadian Tire Winter sleep system that cost about the same. that worked for -20c.
