My first MMO, I remember my level 10 Runemaster meeting some random person and he gave me 10 gold for a horse ticket, told me when to jump off, and we grind mobs for hours just running around killing stuff, with this music rolling. There was no Discord or Twitch streams those days. It was a chat box and your actions as a character within that game that defined the person you were. I miss that.

Some day a developer with some real sense of what an MMORPG truly is, perhaps even one who played Dark Age, will come forward and create something great. We're probably a good ten-years away from that, sadly.

DAoC was one of those games (and you could broaden that to say one of those "things") where every aspect and element came together in a congruent, synergetic way to create a moving atmosphere. When each facet of something's creation compliments the others, they become exponentially stronger. Even though the graphics were simple by today's standards, something about them went perfectly with the pensive ambient music of the day and that wailing, droning siren-song ambient music that played at night. Somehow it captured the somber mood of contemplating your character's long road ahead in the game, especially if you were a casual, solo player. Will he get any good stuff in raids? Will he do good in RvR? etc. No other game has really captured that for me quite like DAoC did.

    • @russelladams9147

@@Teheleri You missed out on the blood-curdling excitement of defending your realm against two others. Holding a castle for as long as you could with races and classes that were clearly different from your enemy's. EQ was very special for sure (incredible community), and a legendary MMORPG that got the ball rolling (not so much Ultima), but the Zek servers certainly lacked the concept of us vs them vs them. Killing one's own races and classes just seem so lackluster and common in today's games - or you get a 2 faction WoW clone that's poorly produced.
Dark Age had 20+ classes and races and three separate realms. The PvE side of those realms developed the game lore and mythology - recognizable mythology from Dark Ages Europe (something Camelot Unchained has ZERO clue about). The realm vs realm vs realm aspect of the title made that sense of belonging important. You wanted to fight for Ireland, or Midgard (Danish./Scandinavian realm), or for the memory of King Arthur.
No game has accomplished so much meaning.

@@russelladams9147 Everquest had the faction war servers for a while, sadly they never came to fruition and were later transferred into zek.
They always have a special place in my memory.
The different factions warring each other were split up into:
      Humans (Humans, Barbarians, Erudites)
Elves (Wood Elf, Half Elf, High Elf)
      Shorties (Halflings, Dwarves, Gnomes)
Evil (Dark Elf, Toll, Ogre, Iksar)
Nothing like rolling a gnome chanter the first day, leveling to 4, grabbing the high elf illusion spell and causing mayhem in the greater faydark newbie zone.

Depressing that this never got a round two - as in Dark Age of Camelot II. Updated graphics and UI with the same concepts in place would have been amazing. I know folks will point to Camelot Unchained, but the races look mostly silly, as in Crowfall silly, Bainshee throws her head at folks? Really?
Anyway - a graphically realistic medieval mmorpg where separate races and flags defend a realm vs a realm vs a realm. Each realm having its own continent to level and RPG in...to evolve and grow in. RvR victory mattering to every member of that realm.
This is unheard of in today's industry. Shameful to say the least.

I think like you, in today's industry i can't understand how the concept of this game wasn't brought back again. 3 realms with their own each class/races, the RvR system was awesome, leveling in each realm was awesome, the people playing in there. Miss a lot the good old times.

IzHaN it really is baffling that developers are so locked on selling fluff and calling it a working title.
Age of Conan, was a great example of this. Beautifully rendered, fantastic musical score...and I immediately went to their "culture" server - that name alone was a warning if their inability. They split the factions along racial lines....but there were toofew races...and didn't have the sense to separate classes.
      Server died - of course.
I think Dark Age was a gem and is something no one is willing to emulate - 44 classes and 24 races - three realms of 1-50 with their own epic dungeons ...battle zones that were persistent - a not so large as to lose people mile-gate system and castles to capture...Darkness Falls, 3 realm pvp dungeon for further epic experiences. The dragons...the elite mobs...events...sigh.

    • @Chad01234
      @Chad01234 8 лет назад +8

What probably needs to happen is Daoc needs to be bought....freed of EA's grasp
      and then shelved.
Then, the owners can rebuild the title exactly and upgrade graphics and UI. There it is.
      Anyone?

Sunsets and sunrises next to water sources... Trials of Atlantis were beautiful in a sense too. I still prefer to think these early games are our(as humans) first attempts to become Gods: creating worlds, rules for them and welcoming others to see if they would stay and if worlds would work and evolve over time. Fun fact, looks like a single human/God is not capable of thinking about every rule that is needed to make a complete world, you start with an idea and welcome other Gods: musicians, architects, poets, etc...

In contrast I picked to be a kobold seer and ended up being ganked over and over after hitting level 10 or so in Fort Atla. I would always keep rerolling my character to get pvp immunity and grouping in Nisse's Lair to make friends before the ganks would come lol, sometimes we'd explore and get ganked together.

SI was not for these cities... these citites have their own music themes. for those who dont know, SI is Shrouded Isles, and it it was an expansion. has nothing to do with these beautiful starter cities.@@Cymricus
