I just got a MacBook Pro 14 inch . I have always had a HP. , but I finally broke down and got one. I figured why. Everything else is apple, and I’m using it for school and my internship
I have an M3 Max 16/40 MBP 14” 48 GB RAM, 2TB SSD, so very similar to yours and I absolutely love it. I mostly do photo editing and image processing work on it and when I am at the office I hook it up to an Eizo 4K screen (which is a necessity for photo editing not only in terms of size but color accuracy) and whenever I am on the move I just take it with me and enjoy (like you said) its perfect size and portability. I keep track of memory pressure and CPU usage and for what I do 48 GB is just fine and ensures smooth sailing with no SSD swapping and in terms of CPU the Max is an absolute beast: I have had it peak to ~80% so far and have not experienced any thermal issues. I came from an intel-based Mac before this and OMG, switching to Apple silicon has been a nigh and day difference for me. I have only good things to say about the M3 Max 14” and if I could go back I would definitely buy it again. One more quick thing: you cannot really compare any MBP with an Air performance-wise as the former will always smoke the latter not only because of different processors but because MBP’s have active cooling and Air’s do not, which make a huge difference. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your M3 Max!
It has surprised me in a good way. Yes it's 3k for the binned one, but seeing the quality from windows laptops at the same price range, it really is no contest. Lenovo Legions are supposed to be the most reliable and well made gaming laptops, and my son's has had two motherboards, plus a brand new laptop replacement in two years. If you don't have the warranty to replace for free, just do the math.
@@billierey It's gucci. Idk the specs, just whatever basic one there was then. You can find them for like 200 bucks now. I still write papers, code, research etc. on it. I've removed as much as possible that isn't essential to me, so at this point it's basically a supercharged netbook, and imo it's really awesome being more of a suped up netbook/researchbook than it is some crazy powerhouse work station.
For most of my work and home life, I have used Window laptops and usually a 17 inch. So the 16 inch MacBook Pro with M3 Pro feels so light to me. I use it for the majority of my work. For Windows I have my custom built desktop for gaming. I love your videos.
I got the M3 Max last year for two reasons: 1. I see many buy two computers, typically a MBA and a Mini. M3 Max is more powerful than both options and I can dock it at home. One computer, two setups with power. 2. I purposefully spent more money to push the obsolescence by a couple of years. I intend to keep this a minimum of five years.
Reviewers noted the M3 ran hotter than the M1, and this was most obvious with the Max variant. They also noted that the M3 Max in particular overwhelmed the cooling system of the 14”, and often ran slower than the ‘Pro’ variant. Even when it was faster it was very very loud. Chances are you’ll be happier with M3 Pro MacBook Pro, very similar performance, much cheaper, less noise, and better battery life. If you actually need the M3 Max, you probably also need the cooling system of the 16”.
I have the M3 Max 14 inch 14 core CPU 30 GPU, it never throttles, but yes, the fans can get loud if it set to max power, set to low power mode it’s likely faster than the Pro and near silent - so you get both options.
event he 16inch which I have used every day since October last year, it CAN in some circumstances run hot and maxed out fans, if rendering out in handbrake etc, and uses all CPUs , if you use video tools box though it tends to use GPUS and doesn't get got, also Final Cut renders are not causing and heat stress. I use mine mostly one desk with two 4K monitors and it is fine. I always use the HDMI port as I am motels etc editing thus use hotel TV's as a second monitor or 3rd, and use an iPad as a second screen, and yes battery life is a awesome on 16inch. 14 inch screen is too small and I don't use it on trains or planes so I don't care about bigger footprint. I need MAX COOLING AND MAX BATTERY LIFE, and thats the 16inch.
@@TheKimNeeper good point, low power mode is great, but if you keep that on all the time perhaps you could’ve saved some cash and got a smaller chip? Nice to have options I guess. Hoping the thermals on M4 will be better, we’ll see…
If I may ask you all a question, since you seem to have either the pro or max chip. When talking about the laptop getting hot, when does it actually happen? As in, does it just get hot quickly or is it only under certain load? Thanks in advance.
What a great review of this machine ! Thumb up as always. I'm still rocking with my MBP M1 Max 64gb 1TB, maybe should've taken 2TB and still thinking often that should've taken the 16 inch... For sure the next MBP I will take will be 16 inch.
I love the 14” for portability and use ability in the situations you mention. However, I am still 16” for the battery, cooling, larger workspace for productivity etc. Also love the speakers on the 16. I rely heavily on Parallels to run many windows programs, and on the M3 Max 14 it was faster then my windows machine until an hour or two in and then it Boggs down. I think it’s the lack of cooling and resulting thermal throttling. So I have ordered the 16 m3 max to be delivered tomorrow. Replacing my M1 Pro MBP 16. Hoping that will do the trick. Thanks for the great content!
I’ve been using the M1 Max MacBook Pro 16” with 32GB of RAM since 2021 and it’s been great. It’s always a trade off with these devices. The pros and cons between sizes and performance benefits are always a trade off in my opinion. I do agree it’s a hassle to travel with the 16” instead of the 14”, though the smaller footprint is just great and I might consider upgrading to a 14” sometime in the future although it’s unlikely as the M1 Max has been serving me well for music production and some casual video editing with DR. I’m more keen on getting a more powerful Mac Studio instead of a new laptop. Great insights on this video! Thank you for sharing.
If anyones looking to get an M3 MBP of any spec, look at the refurbed ones to help you save a buck for the same brand-new feel! Decided to get the base 14" M3 Max MBP and really was torn what to get between that and the M3 Pro model. But then decided to see if there was a refurbed M3 Max on their website and to my surprise there was. It was ridiculously cheaper than buying it new (saved around £600, and only £200 more than the higher M3 pro model) and I swear it looked brand new as if it was never touched. Love the M3 max for what I use it for though, no issues with it
Yep. Love the connectivity of the Pros. I actually use HDMI a lot to connect to TVs and older non-USB-C displays. The SD card slot is great for quickly updating custom firmware on homebrew consoles.
Once you have an M series no need to upgrade, I went from and intel i9 to an M3 MAX and its night and day performance, but I have used M1MAX AND M3MAX cant see a bloody difference as a video producer.
2D video rendering and CPU heavy tasks don’t and won’t see a big difference for at least 4 generations of hardware. But the difference becomes evident when working with 3D graphics, modeling, and rendering like games, developing games, creating 3D graphical animations etc
I'm still rocking my M1 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM and it's shockingly smooth. I'm finally to the point where I'm considering upgrading, but I'll hold out for the M4 Pro 14" when that drops eventually.
I know what you mean about the weight/size of the 16". I absolutely love the screen real estate, but it really does add so much weight and bulk to my luggage, whether that's flying or just walking through London. That said, it's an M1, and it's still kicking bottom!
I have an m3 max and can tell you this, if you are doing 3D rendering, LLM get the Max, if you are doing video editing or graphic design, take the pro. Now that the M4s are out, the pro chips are absolutely insane. But again if you need the GPU power, get a max
Love my 16 inch M3 Max:ed out. I do throw heavy work load on it everyday and it’s not often the fans turns on. It might get a bit warm when having it in the lap. Now I am thinking about a 14 inch Macbook Pro cause I am traveling and don’t wanna bring the 16, it’s to big. It’s perfect having at home though.
Great video. It really seems like software limitations of the iPad ecosystem is the only thing holding us back from fully transitioning to it. I e found a very efficient workflow with camera set ups to IPads- but it’s the software limitation in video editing that’s stopping me from just LIVING in the iPad. So it’s forcing me to still consider a laptop for editing on the go. It’s a tough pill to swallow 😅
I can agree to you, I made tests with 4 different macbook pro m3 versions, and thanks to Amazon I could send them back..... I had a 16 inch m1 before and sold it and since then I tried all version of the M3, but I am not happy. We have 2 Color Pro monitors from viewsonic and still a Mac Pro 7.1 fully loaded which runs also under windows better than our Dell machines in the studio. I have to say we are in the filmscanning and postproduction of old 8mm, 9.5mm and 16mm movies and here we need both worlds. But the 14" Macbook max M3 drived me crazy: the fans are running on small tasks and the MacPro stayed cool and did his work. The macbook air is nice for the road to use it for mails, word, excel, and netflix, but not more, so the M2 air was only one day in the studio and had to leave very quick, At the moment I will buy nothing new, and wait for the end of the year and the M4 in the macbook pro But one thing is stupid, the Minimum Ram should be 36 GB to choose and this is a price overkill from Apple
Just got the M3 Pro Max 14 inch, 36gb ram 1tb. 16 inch is out of the question for me as anything bigger than a 14 inch, I find it a hassle to bring around. I have only done software developement with Xcode and VS Code so I am not pushing it to its limits but I am starting to learn some Machine Learning so that would really test it. I saw some posts on reddit that macs only allocate 2/3 of its ram by default but there's a setting you can do in the terminal to set it even higher and leave 4gb for the system memory. So hopefully I can do some pretty useful LLM if I set it to 32gb.
@@AxfNPn3l it’s good but I ended up returning it because the m4 was right around the corner so I’d rather wait for that if I’m going to fork out the money. But otherwise, it’s good. Depends on what you want to do. If you’re using it for machine learning, you can actually force Mac to allocate more ram through terminal. But for machine learning, more ram is always better
I have a 13 inch MacBook Air m1 with 8gb of ram but then I actually ended up needing a powerful machine for my job to run VM’s and I eventually want to do game dev after I finish school so I’m looking at a base model m3 max 14 inch so thanks for this vid 👍
I was wondering about the Vision Pro! I was thinking you might have returned it. Has that been your worst business purchase of 2024 or are there more videos coming out with it?
I got one of these but the 30 core GPU 14” Pro and from Apple refurb store it cost me £2800! But it fits my desk setup great, and Apple are taking their sweet ass time updating the Studio!
A year ago, I was considering a MacBook Air with the 512/16 gb configuration, but it was only $100 more to get the 14 inch M2 Pro with 512/16 gb configuration and have the additional ports. I am very happy with this laptop. The M3 Pro looks great but it isn't worth it for me to upgrade from the M2 to the M3.
Hey Mark, great video. Are you seeing any keyboard marks on the screen from when your laptop is closed? I am nervous to get this machine as I saw a lot of online posts with pictures of this happening.
I wish you had done a video on your experience with the MacBook 16 inch while on an airplane! I’m thinking about bringing mine while taking a 10 hr plane trip to the Europe in the up and coming months… I think it would possibly be better than the iPad mini which has a short battery life and less screen real estate (girlfriend will be watching off my device)? Let me know your thoughts! Great video champ 🙏👍
I’m actually caught in a bit of a bind, I have 2, 27 4K. It’ll cost me more to buy 2 32 inch or 2 ultra wide and arms + an m3 pro, than it would to buy a 3rd or 4th 4K 27 + m3 max from the Apple refurbished store. I hate that the M3 pro is limited to only two external displays, it should be at least three. I work from home, daytrade, run a business, manage projects for family and multitask a lot. I find that overlapping windows and constantly having to switch between stages and or command tabbing In perpetuity really grinds my workflow to a snail pace.
I debated 14 or 16 inch and for me 16 was right choice, longer battery life, bigger screen for editing FCP and love watch videos and photos again on the bigger screen, however if I was using it to travel about a lot, bags, back pack ect the 14 inch would have been my choice, I purchased brand new Mac Pro M2 and a much reduced price as M3 was looming and have not regretted it, Apple products are very expensive but in the same way you can also shop around and buy slightly older M1 or M2 which is still super capable machines. Ps . My 2014 Mac book pro still works just fine and is a testament to apples longevity and yes I still use 🥳🥳🥳
i use a 14 inch inspiron that is just a little bit faster than a 2019 MBA, laptops like these are mobile workstations, and the MBP 14 is the best mobile workstation.
I have a Panasonic camera that does 5.7k video (Prores / MOV / MP4 codecs) and i want to edit all footage with a few effects, and VERY LITTLE 3d modeling. What would you recommend so that nothing lags .... Thanks 👍
i just ordered my M3max 14 inch 14 Core 30GPU with 36GB unified memory and 1TB ssd... i hope this will be enough for a final cut pro editing rig for my youtube channel and wanna thank mark and this channel for all the great info and videos...
Hi Mark, thanks for the review- I am about to finally buy my first Macbook Pro and I mainly need one for using with my Sony A7iv camera- editing photos on Lightroom and working on my wordpress blog. The internet is SO confusing with what one to buy and like you said the laptops are SO expensive now! just wondering if you would still recommend the M3 max chip for those types of tasks. I don't do videos or RUclips. I just need something that can work long enough for photo editing and blog writing. Any help would be appreciated x
I am now editing my S5II photos in Mac mini m1 16G, it is 24MP, and the high-res photo will be 96MP, I adjust the basic exposure/contrast/texture mostly, and it works fine, I don't feel slow. It also depends on how many images you want to work with, some Soc such as max chips are designed to faster your working time for pro users. I would highly recommend a RUclips channel called Artisright, he has one of the most detailed test about the Macs test, and he is also very knowledged in color management.
Mark, you mention that you use VisionPro because you want more screen 'real estate' but why don't you just attach the 14" macbook pro to a monitor? Or have I missed something?
I'm getting one just to use with 3 external monitors. Coming from a Windows desktop and the Max is the only way to support 3 external that I can find. Just hope the black is obvious enough to indicate my pretentiousness at the local coffee shop 😂
Do your BenQ monitors give you the same clarity and quality as a studio display does linked with you mac? Ive had issues in the past linking macs to ‘normal monitors’
Should I upgrade from my base model M1 Pro 14"? I am planning to edit 8K 12-bit RAW footage from a Canon EOS R5 & post videos of scenic views in 8K HDR. I know I definitely need an external SSD for more storage.
I know it’s cliche saying should I wait for the M4 MacBook Pro - but do you feel this will be a bigger upgrade due to AI. I’m on verge of buying an M3 but don’t want to miss out on any AI capabilities
FCP on the new iPad Pro? Will it get optimized soon? Watching this I’m more inclined to an M3 MacBook Air (or M4 at the end of the year). I don’t need video editing that much
I think the M1 is still worth it. I can't accept that there is much added value in buying into the updates that apple is pushing far too fast. If this is your hopping in point for the M series, go for it....if you already are in the m series, hold.
So, if you spend enough money you should eventually get to satisfactory results. But, most of us don't have budgets for $5000 small 14 inch computers. I can't recommend enough for 95% of computer users---get an m1 max computer. When you run processor speeds sure the m2 and m3 are "faster" but does that matter in the real world? Nope! The m1 max chip macbooks are the best deal by far, given how expensive new or even "newer" macbook pros run. And forget buying a computer with low ram and low ssd storage, you are far better off with an older model that has more ram and storage. :)
Who's joined me in the 14-inch club? 👋

Hey Mark, great video. Are you seeing any keyboard marks on the screen from when your laptop is closed? I am nervous to get this machine as I saw a lot of online posts with pictures of this happening.
I do agree with you that the 14 inch looks better compared to the 16 inch (coming from a 16 inch MBP)
Easy - it's WAY too big unless you fly business or first ;)
I’m actually caught in a bit of a bind,
I have 2, 27 4K.
Ever been on a flight with the 16 inch? Is it as bad as people say it is? About to do a really long flight and would love to bring my device.
Made my eyes water when you said what the price was.
love my 13 inch M3 AIR
Have you noticed any peeling or color coating tarnishing on the space black
i use a 14 inch inspiron that is just a little bit faster than a 2019 MBA, laptops like these are mobile workstations, and the MBP 14 is the best mobile workstation.
I don’t feel like I’m as focused while working on the 14” compared to the 16”. It feels too heavy and chunky to carry around though.
It will be more than enough.
Any updates?
@@tinycontractor got the macbook and now im setting it up and learning what i need to do with it...
How'd ya go was it enough
Would issues relate to smaller BUS, than m1 and m2?
Plan to buy this with a Apple monitor for photo editing, but it is just sooo expensive 😂
I would wait for an M4 MacBook Pro or get an M1, M2 Max. Since, the power of the M3 isn’t that much more powerful.
He is. The monitor is just attached to his face. If you prefer a traditional monitor there's nothing wrong with that. It's just personal preference.
What microphone do u use brother?
I know I definitely need an external SSD for more storage.
vid starts @2:32
I have the 16-inch
will the device heat up when m only browsing(opening 6/7 chrome tabs) and just replying e-mails
I know it’s cliche saying should I wait for the M4 MacBook Pro - but do you feel this will be a bigger upgrade due to AI. I’m on verge of buying an M3 but don’t want to miss out on any AI capabilities
I just bought an m3 max two weeks ago and I’m worried if I should return it for the same reason
planes trains & automobiles is crazy
16 ❤
mac mini M3 soon?
Yeah in general, not just macbooks, 16" laptops feel a little comically large. They're not super portable
Just can’t wait for the IPad to run Mac OS one day! Surface who? Game over for surface at that point, not that they are that much of a competitor.
You don't like how expensive it is but will buy the next one too that is pretty wasteful
Who will buy the next what?
FCP on the new iPad Pro? Will it get optimized soon?
Watching this I’m more inclined to an M3 MacBook Air (or M4 at the end of the year). I don’t need video editing that much
The m3 MAX on 14 inches only comes with 14 cores who do you have 16??? 03:19
If you spend that much money on a laptop then it must be a good investment.
09:31 that’s a MacBook Air mate 😜
16 inch M3 Max ran too hot/loud for my liking so I sent back. M2 Max was much cooler and quieter. Hopefully the M4 chips help.
Low power mode is very powerful on m3
@@ymckrgbyeah but it also turns promotion off
Whats your M2 Max’s configuration?
You lost me at £4,300! 😮 Think I'll research Mac Minis and stick to my £350 Honor 14 Magic Book as my mobile solution for now 🤔
i just watch for the facial expressions and the accent😅
16' clulb here.
Can you please help me with my phone
No you just need to come back to the iPhone 😉
just get m1 pro save ur money for god sake
Yeah I got the MacBook Pro 16” M1 for 1200 like 5 months ago. Pretty worth it compared to new for 2500.
Can you computer science teaching me with my phone number
