20:26 " *Contemplation of the truth is the highest good.* " Philippians 4:8 _Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things._
I live in a very rural area and love to go on walks and pray or memorize Holy Scripture. I can usually memorize a verse from the Psalms during one walk. I will some times mediate on a spiritual truth from something I have memorized on a walk. I try to be lead of the Lord on what verse and spiritual truth He impresses my to meditate upon during my walk. Everyone is different and this may not work for them, but because it is quite out here and I can hear the sounds of nature, like birds singing, crickets and other sounds it is easier. When I lived in the city these types of walks were not as rewarding. Then, I had to be still before the Lord and read scripture or some type of spiritual book like the Confessions of St. Augustine and learn to commune with God. I was in different seasons of my life at those times. It seems that we need to adjust for those. Sorry for getting to long winded.
Thank you for the reflection. I was depressed and had anxiety 12 years ago. I went to mass every day, went for confession, spent hours in adoration and attended the charismatic meeting and after 4 years, my depression and anxiety disappeared without medication. I love the way you explain this time Father regarding the pandemic. God is working and something good will come from this.
I'm late to the party by 9 months but this lecture is EXACTLY what I needed at this moment in time, Glory to God. Thank you Fr Dominic for a wonderful lecture. God bless always.
Wow. Thank you for this amazing video. I wish I'd found this video during the 1st quarantine, I've been dealing with depression and anxiety for 15 years, and been trying to find solace in all kinds of wrong directions... The second quarantine has been devoted to relying on God more, and laying my life in the hands of the Blessed Mother, and I haven't yet felt so at peace since before my teen years. Trying to fix everything one step at a time, and the Blessed Mother is taking me to new heights, assuredly never could I have done this alone. Thank you so very much for your work with Saint Thomas and explaining various subjects he discussed !
I'm 70 parenting a 43 year-old severely/profoundly handicapped son during this pandemic. I, when I feel out of sorts, search out my favorite comedy on You Tube. So also do I rely on the Rosary.
Good on yer! The Thomistic Institute provides a wonderful service to those who listen to, and watch its lectures-and to the Church through advancement of a an intellectual tradition of faith seeking understanding-and to society through advancement of an intellectual tradition which is a high point of Western thought.
When I'm feeling sorrow to some extent I have a tendency to revert to an activity that brings me a modicum of comfort although not complete relief. My wife tries to control this activity but she is not always successful. This enjoyable activity is eating a large bowl of my favorite ice cream with an extremely small spoon at a slow pace. Not too slow, which causes the ice cream to melt a bit too much. There is a problem with this type of temporary escape from pressure. It is simply the obvious challenge it presents of it controlling you and you not controlling it. From a religious standpoint Jesus taught us to deny our self to be His disciple. Certain gratifications can get in the way of spiritual progress at times like during lent or other times when we are being inclined to fast and pray but resist that spiritual prompting because food has too much of a hold on our lives.
Such a beautiful video ,thanks. Fr. So enjoyed hearing n watching,as well as learning wisdom about our Human state n how to balance our emotions n mind ,especially if they seem a bit disordered. .
Thank you so much for this very helpful talk on handling emotions with reason, at this difficult and challenging time. My take-home phrase was not to judge my spiritual state by the passions I experience, which I had been doing, and so suffering. I feel helped and validated by Fr Dominic. UK Aquinas101 student. (I saw the replay, it shows at 23.45 UK time.)
Always is good to review this excellent lecture. Thanks for sharing your holy wisdom TI and Father Dominic. God bless you and also your service to others.
I do have to say that Stoicism doesn’t advocate suppressing emotions, but investigating where they come from. They advocate a break from the moment the emotion arises and for us to take a pause to ensure we don’t act out of, say anger.
When the mathematician Paul Erdos was grieving for his mother, a friend of his said "a mighty fortress is our mathematics". Not withstanding the seeming mockery, the pursuit of mathematical truth can be a pleasure. There is great comfort in the truth.
Quick fix, but first one off, were small children in the eyes of God you know so go to Mama, go to St Joseph or to your guardian Angel or to your favorite saints and never trust your own emotion.
This`s a good place to back. Thanks, TI, God bless you, Friars.

Revisiting this lecture a second time, on Palm Sunday as Holy Week begins, it continues to resonate. Thank you for everything you do, Fr Legge! 🙏
Good GOD!
This must be the first video Aquinas 101 has done!

There's a problem with the other speaker sound isn't working. Thomas... Question.
