I love this scene in particular, because it represents so much of what was missing from the Prequels. One of my biggest overall complaints with the trilogy is that the Clone Wars never seemed to have any real consequnces on the average citizen of the galaxy. Scenes like this not only illustrate how the war ruined countless, innocent lives, but also adds serious gravity to the eventual cause of the Rebel Alliance when those same people are under the Empire's heel. This scene adds so much to Padme's character, and it's a damn shame that we see nothing of the sort through her role in the films. I know, it's great that it exists in some medium, but it's a real shame that if you're essentially forced into a "summer reading" viewing of the Clone Wars series to pick up the slack of three feature films.
The thing is that the universe of the Prequels is so vast that you could make an own Saga based solely in the Prequel era. The future of Star Wars is on TV, as showcased by the Clone Wars and Rebels.
Do you know what bothers me? Despite everything she did, whatever she could to protect democracy from crumbling within her government, it was all a waste, and for the next 23 years after the Clone Wars, the Republic would become the very thing Padme feared it would become. *That* bothers me..
Yeahh it is sad. The secret plot behind the clone wars was bigger than everyone, even Padme. If only they knew that this victory would only be shortlived compared to what was to come.
You know alot of moments in clone wars cartoon end up being pointless Alot of struggles and suffering To achieve nothing, Clone wars is a Very depressing "kids" show.
If the Empire and Darth Vader arose earlier Padme might never have had children or if Vader was to rise after, the children wouldn't have been able to be hidden away (presuming house arrest)
Unfortunately he kinda was against her on this. Anakin doesn’t usually say much about politics, but in the first episode of this arc he showed that he had a very simple understanding of it. Basically “Republic good separatists bad must beat separatists”. He was upset with the measures Padme was taking to try and get peace. He probably would be happy that she was doing well, though.
Apparently, Palpatine was no match for Padme. If she did not die after giving birth, Palpatine would be far far from being emperor as long as she breaths.
If Padme lived after giving birth to Luke and Leia, she would have a vendetta against Palpatine both personal and political. Political in the sense of destroying the very Republic she swore to protect and represent, and personal in the sense that Palpatine turned Anakin to the dark side.
She couldn't have done anything to prevent the Empire, Palpatine was named emperor when she was still in the Senate. I would believe that, after all that happened, she would have been the first along with Bail organa and her contacts in the Separatist systems to form the first Rebel Alliance. Between the members of the Republic that didn't want Palpatine in power and the members of the Separatist senate, they could have created a new army that didn't have anything to do with Dooku, the Trade federation and such.
@@alejandroyava I think that Palpatine knew that which is why he was likely pleased when he learned that she died due to "having lost the will to live" and in fact, he probably killed Padme somehow as no one dies just from losing the will to live, they have to actually make the effort to kill themselves somehow. Padme wasn't selfish and wouldn't have done either act despite her heartbreak, she would've lived for her and Anakin's kids, to get revenge on Palpatine and to help free the galaxy from him.

@@kennethjnilsson6418 It is *extremely* apparent that the pasifist world of Naboo is a political parrallel to Sweden of the Cold War. Sweden condemned both the Soviet supression in the East Block (Checkoslovakia) as well as American intervention in countries like Vietnam. They would use resources to arrange peace talks with Vietcong and US for three years before the war started. And when US told Sweden to "mind its own business" Sweden actually sent humanitarian help (doctors, hospitals) to Vietcong. In the episodes with Lotta, Padme is very worried how the investments in the military industrial complex cripple the infrastucture of the normal people (food, water, electricity) and always opposed more investments into the war (US has a ridiculously high military budget yet alarmingly mediocre infrastructure for a Western Country) Social Democrats also have a long history of anti-military industrial complex, neutrality and pasifism - as well as loyalty to higher moral fidelity instead of super power blocks or war. The show never really adressed free trade, except when it was done by a neutral side selling arms and granting loans to both sides - aching to today's Arab Emirates - an US ally mind you. But adding unto that real world contex, social democrazies of the world are extremely pro free trade if its done responsibly and ecologically. Sweden even has more millionaires per capita than America. Looking at the American political stratosphere reveals a very narrow outlook into Padme's political beliefs and the allegories George was going for. It is good to remember that Lucas like to talk about "The American Empire" a lot as well as he admitted that Palpatine's speech was influenced by Bush's Patriot Act speech.
@@kungolaf4499 I think you are inserting a little too much of Sweden into your explanation, but the real reason Sweden was only able to remain neutral was because they sold ore to Germany. Either way, neutrality in World War 2 isn't really a good thing. And Naboo wasn't exactly pacifist. They supported and took part in the clone wars and also fought off the trade federation. If you understand libertarian points of view I think you would realize that libertarians are in favor of decreasing military spending, decentralization of power, against the patriot act, and anti-war more largely. I think you believe I'm saying she would be a republican, which I'm not saying anything like that. I think Star Wars in general is a pacifist, anti authoritarian story. In the context of the original trillogy, which most of it was centered around the Vietnam war, the Vietnam war was started by democratic presidents and ended by Nixon. That is why george lucas wasn't being overtly political, more just anti-authoritarian. The US military spending is normally around 16 to 18 percent of its total spending. I agree that is still too much, but when taking into consideration that the US basically provides for the protection of almost the entire free world it makes sense. I believe the US shouldn't have military bases in other countries. Let the world defend itself. I agree the Sweden is a great example of free enterprise. That is why they have a high standard of living. My basic point is this, social democrats and libertarians share their point of view on social issues such as pacifism, anti MIC, and neutrality. Where they differ is in the question of size and scope of government. What are the governments limits? Power centralized in the hands of anyone is a mistake.
Seeing how some people in the government are handling a deadly pandemic that’s already killed more than 300000 Americans, this style of politics shown in Star Wars that care about the people is even more relevant

At a time when infrastructure in the US is falling behind, healthcare and quality education is out of reach for many, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars becoming increasingly unpopular, and Padme is the embodiment of the left, wanting to end or scale back military involvement abroad, and spending more at home on healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
This is why we need to elect our vets; they’re the only ones who know how terrifying war truly is. Our military is starting to turn into a tool used for political gain instead of a global force for good. The only way we can change that is by putting it under the control of people who understand the responsibility of being Commander in Chief.
I spoke to the voice actress of Padme, Catherine Taber, about this exact scene. She actually wrote her own dialog for it and ran it past Filoni and he accepted it. I am so glad he did as it shows how passionate Padme was for the people and how hard she wanted to fight to end suffering.
Has anyone noticed that Padme seems to be the only senator that could challenge Palpatine in politics? Her intuition seems to rival Palpatine and been to only one who could see through most of the schemes.
Not only that, possibly that's the reason why Palpatine wanted her gone, but yet Palpatine sees her as a tool, a key that it would lead to Anakin's downfall to the Dark Side.
That speech among other things is perhaps sadly what sealed her fate at the end of the Clone Wars. The people loved her and Palpatine couldn't afford to have some one like her around acting as a constant thorn in his side. Thats why I support the theory that Palpatine actually drained the life from her to save Annakin.
But at the same time her naive idealism has also greatly benefited Palpatine, like allowing incompetent Jar Jar to grant him more power and helping Rush Clovis take over the banking clan and put the banks in Palpatine's pocket.
@@saljpal3 but that naivety would have defiantly wavered with time but the idealism would have not and rebellious are won by convincing words and bullets
0:18 The whole chamber went quiet and all eyes were on her. And suddenly, she wasn't afraid. 0:28 She spoke for the people. She had no mask and no strategy. All she did was speak from her heart. 1:59 When she finished, there was a moment of silence and then cheers. She could feel the change in the room. She could feel every one of them of the people back home. She felt the Republic and its strength. She felt it take one step back from the brink. The bill was defeated. She knew even before the vote was counted. The Senate showed itself to be more concerned about the people of the Republic than its own coffers. This is why she was there. This is how things were suppose to be. And this is why she believed in the Republic. It is not without corruption. It is not without darkness. But there is good at its core. And just because something good has darkness in it doesn't mean you abandon it. Just because there is darkness in something does not mean you do not love it. You show it love, you show it light, and you hope it chooses the light.
Episodes like this shows how great Star Wars can be without guns, lightsabers, and war. TCW gives this to the prequels and the other two eras. It’s a shame we didn’t see her in live action like this but either way it shows us that a voice is louder and more powerful than actions. The prequels were alright but this show makes it more understandable while giving depth and emotion. Padme may have been just a another senator to some but this speech is what gives her respect and power in the senate. I love this episode bc as powerful as palpatine was in the force, manipulating the senate and Jedi order, and the secret leader of the separatists he knew she had delayed his plan with powerful words that he didn’t expect. I think this shows that the senate was more powerful than him and may even could’ve stopped or foiled his ultimate plan. He had to abide by its rules until it was time to commence with order 66 at the right time.
Imagine how much stuff Padme could have changed if she ever managed to become chancellor had anakin helped finish off Palpatine "and you and I can rule the galaxy! make things the way we want them to be!"
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom." -Martin Luther King Jr.
I always dismiss the people who say the politics of the prequels are boring or too confusing. It's a wonderful part of world building and I enjoy it. The thing is that the universe of the Prequels is so vast that you could make an own Saga based solely in the Prequel era. The future of Star Wars is on TV, as showcased by the Clone Wars and Rebels.

Apparently, Palpatine was no match for Padme. If she did not die after giving birth, Palpatine would be far far from being emperor as long as she breaths.
MymemoriezZ ; and then what?
Unfortunately, he did become na emperor even b4 Padme died...

For some reason, I just wanted to acknowledge how we always talk and argue about Star Wars in terms of the Saber dueling and the fights between the Republic and the Separatist and the various characters etc. but you never really bother about how Star Wars is like real life with governments and laws and terrorist acts. Major difference is that they're multiple planets and world's but it's the same in terms of governing a society and keeping laws intact. So, aside from the actual Star Wars and the different species of aliens, it's like a microcosm of the real world. The Senate are like various types of Governments.
Well, it's like something of the real world....

Yo this is scary relevant in united states....more funding for the military and less for the people.
Unfortunately, even the veterans we do have in congress are often war hungry monsters.

Padme is so underrated. I love her. She's one of my favourite characters
I love this speech
That speech among other things is perhaps sadly what sealed her fate at the end of the Clone Wars. The people loved her and Palpatine couldn't afford to have some one like her around acting as a constant thorn in his side. Thats why I support the theory that Palpatine actually drained the life from her to save Annakin.
But at the same time her naive idealism has also greatly benefited Palpatine, like allowing incompetent Jar Jar to grant him more power and helping Rush Clovis take over the banking clan and put the banks in Palpatine's pocket.
