Hi. The question is whether the Bannabians will return to their homeland Panapa Island or stay on the island of Rabi knowing that Banapa Island has no airport or hospital

Well.. i doubt we will... there are more opportunities here in Fiji than in Kiribati... but we still maintain our Links to our Home Land❤

Although they are they have a different culture and language than us native fijians, I feel as if they are part of Fiji now tbh. They are kinda like our little cousin we adopted and now live together happily. Same goes with kioan from kioa island. Always room for more. After all, Fiji was ( still is ) a buffer between east and west pacific

The other question is why an airport was not opened in the land of Panapa Island. Are the Panabians still demanding the right to self-determination through the establishment of a state for them?

Genuine question 🙋 Do Banabans consider themselves Fijian or Kiribati?

Banaba is not the real name. British explorers mistakenly called it Banaba when they discovered it in the 1800s. The true name of Ocean Island is called Puakonakai.

Christina deBrum E reke mai ia am taeka anne? It is always referred to as Banaba in our local tales in Kiribati. “Bwaanaba” Bwaa meaning rocky/coral Aba meaning land “Rocky/Coral Island” in Kiribati. Otherwise it also means “Hollow land” in the Banaban dialect. Of course with all due respect if there are other sources that prove Puakonakai please share I’m always interested in learning my culture from all sources and cross referencing them accordingly.
