Only 4 More For Delivery: The Status Of The Boeing 747 In 2022

  • The past two years have been significant for the Boeing 747. Even before the pandemic, but mainly after it, numerous jumbo jets around the world have been retired. This includes over 30 400s operated by British Airways, seven from KLM, and five from Qantas. Air India has four technically still part of the fleet although these are currently marked as parked.
While Lufthansa is one of the few airlines still using the 747-400 for passenger services, it appears that four of these aircraft won’t be reactivated and returning to service any time soon.
On the production side, just four 747s will be delivered by Boeing before the program ends for good. With all of this in mind, let’s look at everything going on with the Boeing 747 as of early 2022.

The 747 outlived the Concorde, A340, DC-10, MD-11 and the A380. Joe Sutter, father of the 747 created the original and the best. Just like the Chevy Suburban, it should receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The A340 as well as the A380 are still flying. The A340 specifically is still used by multiple airlines and some are even in cargo configurations. We will likely see that plane continue to fly for at least another decade in passenger service. The MD-11 is still used by a few cargo airlines around the world as well.

The Joe Sutter thing is largely a Boeing marketing myth. The 747 was actually created as military cargo aircraft in the early 1960's lost the bid. Joe and team basically took the already existing and tested airframe and converted it to passenger. The US tax payer funded most of it. The conversion was relatively easy.

I had a memorable experience in the eighties as a kid. Flying a 747 from Buenos Aires to Amsterdam we were kindly upgraded from economy to business class on the upper deck. It was my first time up there and I was fascinated by the straight staircase. During the flight the kind stewardess gave me some comic books to read. Surprisingly when we landed and I wanted to return the comics, she told me I could keep them. That was such a big gesture for a little kid. I believe I still have these comics.

I also remember the mini cans of soda which I thought were so cool.

Sad to see the end of production for the 748. Growing up, I remember being awestruck by the idea that something so large that it had a spiral staircase and an upper-deck, could fly. Climbing up the airstairs, for the first time, looking at the huge wings, the tandem JT9D turbofans, the cockpit and upper deck windows high above, created an impression of scale that made the plane seem even larger than it actually was. It was, frankly, magical.
And then it happened, in early 1984, from Geneva to New York, on a brand-new SwissAir 747-300: we were seated on the upper-deck. And not just any upper-deck, the then new 743’s stretched upper-deck, 23 feet longer than previous examples. Later upper-deck experiences would be business-class, but on this flight, it was coach and the upper deck had a 3 by 3 seating. To my 9 year old eyes, it was astonishing to walk up the stairs and suddenly be inside what seemed like a whole 737 (complete with full-sized exit doors) stacked on top of the rest of the plane. Looking out the window, I couldn’t believe how high off the ground we were: this wasn’t plane, it was a flying building.
The 747 isn’t just a plane, it’s an icon that symbolizes the aspirations of all those who strive to do something great. It’s still huge, it’s still majestic, and it still stands apart from everything that came before or after. It is the greatest airliner ever made.

Got to tour the upper deck and was treated to a remote stand arrival into Bangkok. Wish i could’ve stayed on the tarmac just that bit longer to take photos of her Majesty. I grew up around 2006-2013, the golden age of the 777, that was the aircraft taking me everywhere, only had a handful of flights on the Jumbo. With so few operating now, I should try to fly her whenever i can. However, I think I should prioritise the A380, as it’s also on the decline and is the 747 of my generation, being the largest flagship passenger aircraft of the world.

I’m 55. I grew up in the state of New Mexico. Roswell NM had and Air Force base that had B-52’s and because of this the runways were long and wide. When the base closed, Boeing contracted to fly new 747’s to this airport and then the crews from all over the world, both pilots and flight attendants would train in the aircraft and then fly them to begin their inaugural service flights. I was 3-4 years old when the trading began (if I’m remembering correctly). I remember dozens of 747’s parked with their amazing paint schemes. Usually there were a couple of 747’s doing touch and goes on the longest runway.
I went on to become a pilot and airline pilot after college and my Navy service. I will never forget thee 747. It was a beautiful aircraft. I’ve flown a 747-200 simulator but not the actual aircraft. Very very stable platform and it just does exactly what you expect when flying approaches.
I have many friends flying the aircraft for UPS and one who flew the 800 for Cathay Cargo. They all say it is their favorite.
I wish airlines and cargo companies would order a few hundred more. I’d like to see her being made new and updated indefinitely.

747-200 (big-top) was special for me. I remembered that it was my first flight from Hong Kong to Heathrow back to 1990s.
Before the 911 attack > I often asked the crews for cockpit visit; 747 cockpit was largest and there were spare seats behind the pilot and co-pilot too.
My favorite seat for 747 was upper deck instead of lower deck on 747. So far only 747 and A380 has upper deck. 747 was the most popular longhaul transport in 1990s parallel with the Lockheed Tristar and McDonnell DC10 / MD11. Since then most 747, Tristar, DC10 & MD11 were retired in 2000s.
I think I have not riding on Boeing 747 for more than 20 years. In 2000s most airlines prefer using more efficient twin engine like A340 or 777 for their longhaul passengers fleet instead of four engines 747.
Anyway Boeing 747 (the flying queen) was legend in aviation history.

I flew from London to LAX in February with some avgeek friends, and we made a special effort to try out the Lufthansa 747-8 as we routed via Frankfurt. I have flown in over 40 747s, -100, -SR -200, -200M -300, -300M -300/SUD -300M/SUD, -400, and now the -8. Sadly I never managed to catch an -SP. I have sat in the front nose seats in tourist (Virgin) and First (British Airways), the upper deck in tourist (BA) and premium economy (Virgin), plus various business and tourist cabins on the main deck over the years. I have also done jump seat trips on most variants. One notable flight was on a KLM -300M/SUD during the Iraq war in 1991. Amsterdam to LAX with cargo at the back, and just six passengers. We all got to sit in business.

1st time was on a BOAC (the forerunner of BA) -100 series example in Oct 1977 to Barbados, and the last time was a modern BOAC (Yes British Airways) -400 series out of Dubai for LHR prior to the pandemic in March 2019.
The poorly sold -300 model was with South African Airways out of Joburg, and the even more rare SP series, was a Pan Am airframe, out of Frankfurt for LHR
I don't suppose I will fly on one again, but my son lives not too far away from Kemble where apart from a fairly regular stream of Jumbos inbound to the scrapman, (an Atlanta Air freighter in Saudi Colours arrived only just last week), there is also the beautifully restored ex BA 'Negus' liveried B747-400 for me to visit when I get nostalgic.
