This is on a high-level, clearly explained, honest, and SWINGING! I continue to refer my students to these videos, this particular one is concise, I'm left wanting more - which ain't a bad thing. It do mean a thing, 'cause it got that swing!
I listen to jazz since 5 years old. It affect how I thinking later. Especially on improvisation. Improvisation also useful in daily task. As long as the goal achieved, use any available resources to make it happen.
This video is amazing! I used it to show examples of improvisation to my 4th grade class, you go over things so clearly and give excellent concrete examples. Thanks for your hard work!

I love the way Eli says "jazz". You can hear his accent the rest of the time that he's talking; but when he says "jazz", you know jazz is his native language.
Love this sound! Shes knocking it out of the park! Sadly, I've been playing the trumpet in marching band for 14 years (collegiate scholarship) and still don't know how to achieve this. I'm embarrassed, saddened and aspiring to learn that (as well as scream on the horn). Only then will I feel like a true trumpeter.
Fourteen years? Now you know where all the notes are on your trumpet, you know the hundreds of ways to begin a note, end a note, whisper a note, make it buzz, etc. You're more than ready to stop thinking and allow your brain and your body to do what it wants to do, to let one note suggest another, to let one phrase suggest another, to let one phrase answer the previous phrase. Play for your own delight. Play to enjoy the pleasure of the sounds you can make. By the way, the dynamics of playing in a small group will teach and motivate you more than a classroom.
The advice every jazz musician has been telling me is play standards and learn to play some of your favorite jazz songs. It's better advice than it sounds
@@nemo227 I think that’s my issue, I’m shy af when I try to gig. However, in a structured environment (like college), I had all the confidence in the world bc you had to compete for your chair. I’m talking sit-ups in sectionals while playing the national anthem. Yet when I hear a simple tune that begs to be improvised all over. I worry about key identification. I don’t have perfect pitch, but if I can find my group and open up from there. Maybe I’ll be able to play with others like I think I can do. Thanks for the reassurance, truly.
@@Bi_scotti_5 You’re right. I extend that to my favorite show tunes and video game themes. I even look them up on YT or play by ear. Every Sunday I go to a local park and play in the corner (bc I like the echo and it reminds me of the stand battles we had during the “5th quarter”). Love my horn, but I gotta be better on her. Have you ever felt like you’ve lost some of your skill a bit and picked up your instrument just to see if you still have it?
@@Jihlike I took a break from bass for about 3 years before going to college this year and playing it almost every day. I definitely felt like I was worse than I was before, but honestly my technique was kind of bad and I was very stubborn before. I wouldn't try to tackle challenging songs and I would create workarounds. I also didn't practice very often. I think sometimes if you end up in a slump like I did, when you come back to it your attitude changes towards it. Not only that but you have perspective and hindsight. Whenever I think I've regressed in my musicianship, knowing my approach now vs then really helps. By the way you're right; being in a band would definitely help you a ton. Being able to contextually your practice and technique with other musicians will probably make you feel so much better about your playing. They'll hype you up and point out things you may not have noticed about your playing.
exactly sir and I find he band the guide for singer..get u out of jungle and on yurr lane game...all areas of vocals covered by band im using band to guide vocal in all areas
My goodness Camille got a great tone out of that sax. You all did well, but when a front end instrument sounds that clean dosent it show. Good demo folks...
the saxophonist has such a classic tone. like something you'd hear from the 50's or 60's. love it.
Yes but with a modern touch. She is One-One
40s
For sure. I love the jazzy but classical tone that they have
Her style reminds me of Cannonball Aderley
I just got the pleasure to meet her. And her playing is 100x better in person. I love her
Sax player has a great sound!
has a great tone for jazz and most important character

Yessir, the better you know your instrument, the better you listen equals the more you hear and the more ways you can play.
Can't get over the drummer's bowtie. Class!
