Steely Dan. As a kid hearing them on the radio, I found them incredibly boring. It took till I was in my 40s to "rediscover" them and give all their albums a listen. I'm not sure what triggered it - I think it was from hearing "My Old School" on the radio and realizing that I really liked it. I ended up loving and appreciating Steely Dan, and now I listen to them all the time. Their album Aja is an absolute masterpiece!

Well, I was born in'59 to parents both in their mid 40's (44 & 46), so their music was Perry Como, Jim Reeves, Glen Miller, Lawrence Welk, Andy Williams and grew into The Carpenters and Glen Campbell in the 60's & 70's. My taste going into my teens in the 70's was more Eagles, Journey, BTO and Bob Seger, but always had a love for the crooning of Jim Reeves. I still put on a CD remix of Ole Gentleman Jim from time to time... Yes, I bought the one album as an homage to my parents belting out 'I Fall to Pieces' or dancing to 'He'll Have to Go' in our living room while I rolled my eyes. Thanks for this. It reminds me of my love of soft, melodic tunes that my parents passed on... Yes, I love Bread and have since the 70's! :)

When it’s on you get a mild grin on your face remembering the end of the Goodbye Girl or feeling like your soul has been excised from your chest over a breakup or loss of someone you loved. Bread are the quintessential representation of the mellow yet soothing and soul healing musical balm acts of the 70s. Bands like America, Firefall, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Seals and Crofts, LRB, Poco, as well as the unforgettable John Denver came under that seemingly dubious banner of 'guilty pleasures'. 'Aubrey' was the Bread song that did it for me, As a heartbroken teen in the mid 80's I decided to treat myself to some new music to cheer myself up. With my limited funds I picked up two tapes from the clearout sale section of my local music shop. I picked two artists I'd never heard of in hopes of finding one good song between tham. I went home with Cosmo's Factory and The Best of Bread. I can't even remember the bitch now, but I remember thinking the guy who wote Aubrey knew my pain! Good Bye Girl is such an amazing song. I was lucky enough to be the youngest of 9 and with that, I NEVER got to choose the songs we listened to. Looking back, I wouldn't trade that in for the world! Most of my friends were the the oldest or second oldest in their families, so they didn't have the benefit of growing up knowing Santana, The Beatles, Jim Croce, Grand Funk Railroad, Tower of Power, War, America, The Bee Gees (prior to their disco fame)...etc. In 8th grade I mentioned to my Jr. High Choir teach that I wanted us to sing "These Dreams" by Jim Croce...she asked "How the heck do you know about Jim Croce?" I started naming all the songs I knew and she was quite impressed, for the next 2 years, she would order sheet music and lyrics (so I could learn them) and we would talk about music and the groups I grew up listening to. Even though I never told her, I was grateful to Ms. Hill and how she helped feed my love of music, but especially my brothers and sisters who helped create it! Dude ... "Guitar Man" is one of the most beautiful songs ever. The story is so enthralling and well-told that I can see in my head the guy they've written about. For me, it is easy to see this guy longing for every opportunity to play, regardless of how many people show up. It really does make me think of Tom Petty, who for years wrote songs and played through every tour like they would be his last. "Mother Freedom," "Goodbye Girl" ... Bread's awesome, man.

      Suite: Clouds, Rain
See the clouds adrift so far below
Ever changing as they come and go
Makes me wonder why I'm up so high
When really I am down so low
Of all the wonders I was one allowed
I think that I would always choose a cloud
Always brings my feelings right out loud
      Whether I'm ashamed or proud
And on this airplane comin' home to you
Sometimes I think I've flown my whole life through
      My whole life...through
As I wing my way to you
See the clouds they're giving life below
In colors that the canvas cannot show
Keeping secrets no one else could know
For I'm the one who told them so
Now and then I get up close to you
I'd like to stay but I'm just passing through
So I'll have to say goodbye
      Until next time I fly
      Make my bed-light the light
Comin' in on the midnight flight
Touch the ground and soon you will be
      Safe inside reality
      Change your mind-change your name
Still the music it sounds the same
Rainfall don't bother me at all
You see the world reflected in the highway
Come on rainbow, I can't let you go
Before I reach the end of you someway
So the next time raindrops fall
If it makes you climb the walls just think of me.

I had heard their songs at some point in time back in the 70’s. As time passed, their songs would come on playing in the background somewhere like a grocery store not knowing who they were. It wasn’t until I got older that I learned to really appreciate music on another level. I have most of their songs stored on one of my playlists. When I hear music like theirs, it dawns on me that real true gifted music is something that is a rarity in today’s world. So well done Adam. I enjoy your channel so much. I have shared your videos with friends of mine who are equally touched by your passionate way of discussing the music and artists you love, and the stories you share of the precious relationship you had with your father. That passion is why your interviews are so great. The artists respond so well to you. The interviews are fun as well as informative. So sorry to hear of your father's passing. I have a story to share with you. My mum loved Bread, the Allman Brothers and Don McLean and always sang their songs around the house. I was 7 when Make It With You was number 1. I was a ballerina but couldn't dance anymore from too many knee injuries. I loved music so VERY VERY much, dancing to it most of all, but since I could no longer dance I started singing/writing/ recording. I didn't expect to go far but went farther than I expected. My projects brought me to musicians who had played with all of mum's favorite bands. One project in particular brought Jimmy Griffin into my life. If you've never listened to his solo albums you really should. His voice was haunting and he had an incredible range. He really wrote some fantastic songs, after all he, Robb, and Fred Karlin wrote the Oscar winning For All We Know which became a hit for the Carpenters. Look What You've Done should have been a hit. Jimmy's vocals are stupendous, the tempo change and lyrics on the bridge are sublime, and Jimmy's soaring, sustained note at the end of the bridge sends chills up one's spine. Games of Magic and Dream Lady are hypnotic. Jimmy was a more versatile singer than David, he could rock, sing ballads beautifully, as well as country, and gospel. He had a lot of soul in his voice. A song from his solo album that I LOVE is She Knows. Both Richard Manuel, and Ray Charles covered it. The lyrics are fantastic. I think most men could relate to them. At 60 his voice was as good as it was at 25. He hadn't lost one bit of his range, tone or fluidity. Sadly in '04, as we were working on a project he got laryngitis. It was from lung cancer and life can be so cruel, he left this world without his stunning voice. He was a kind, caring man who bent over backwards for the people in his life. He also deserved to be a household name. He and David harmonized better than anybody. That heavenly harmony was one of the many magical aspects of Bread. I miss you so much James, thank you for all your kindness. Much love.

The Best of Bread was in full rotation in my home when I was a kid. To me it was always background music, not something that I would personally choose to put on if I had control over the records. With that being said, it's still a great album.

Bread has been high on my greatest bands list since I was a kid and they were on the charts. They never get old. Also, I’m sorry for your loss. It’s especially hard to lose a parent.

I’ve always thought that Mother Freedom was a far better song than it’s popularity indicated. Would love to hear that one time by another rock group today. The message of the words is just a relevant today as ever!

I’m so sorry to hear about your father’s recent passing. Nothing in life can prepare you for such a loss. And the way music is tied to the memories we have is incredibly powerful. Tonight I had a TV special playing in the background and I wasn’t really watching it. But during that show The Kingston Trio performed “Try to Remember” and I suddenly found myself overcome with emotion. That was a song my father, now gone nearly 12 years, used to sing to me when I was a small child. Even as I type this I’m still caught up in the wave of grief brought on by that moment. And music has the power to take us to other places, too….joy, peace, sorrow, and many others. I’m a huge Bread fan. I have been as far back as I can remember. And every single song of theirs evokes something unique. Your experience with Bread really resonates with me. Thanks for sharing it with us! 😊

I really enjoyed this segment. My favorite Bread Song is "If". I have never really hated any group but I did not like my dad's favorite artist named "Boy Wills and his Texas Playboys," a group in the Western Swing genre. I grew to appreciate them later in life and I often wish I could have a discussion with my dad about them. My dad hated Rock and Roll and did not like The Beatles which were my favorite group while I was in high school. However, after listening to Bob Will, I can see that his group was a precursor to Rock & Roll, even though my dad would not agree. I am a 72 year old Rock & Roller and listen to very little music made after the 1980s.

Hey Roy Dan, I can so relate to your story. My dad listened to nothin but country. I was weaned on Hank Williams. I wound up listening to everything, and dad just didnt get it. Ya hear all about the 27club. The first rocker to die young? They all miss the point. The lifestyle on the road. The drugs. The women. The hellraisin. The early death. It was Hank Williams.

I was a baseball pitcher in tenth grade. Right before the game I was scheduled to pitch, I heard "If" on the radio and it stuck with me throughout the game. Somehow, the lyrics were easy to remember and meditate on. It turned out to be the best game I would ever pitch.

When I was a freshman in college, I got tickets to a Bread concert. I really liked their music but questioned how good they'd be, that a full concert of their music would be too much. It shocked me that I absolutely loved the concert, it has to be one of the best I ever attended. First, they sounded great -- David Gates sang as well in concert as he sounds on his albums, just an amazing voice. Next, they sang a surprising number of up tempo songs, songs like "Mother Freedom," and spaced them perfectly. It was an amazing night and my date, who was not excited by going to a Bread concert, ended up loving the concert, too, as well as falling in love with Bread.

Great band! I had the best of Bread 8-track in high school, my girlfriend loved them too! It was a must have album back in the day! I like David Gates solo songs too, like Goodbye Girl !Thanks for keeping the music alive Professor!

I loved Bread. David's voice alone is killer. When he sang....goosebumps. Of course I was in school when they came out so, crushes were going on. What an incredible idea recalling Karen's voice being like David's. Very true. So happy you, eventually got into them. So sorry about the loss of your Dad. I adored mine too, was definately a Daddy's girl. Sending hugs.

My husband and I love Bread! In 2005 I walked down the aisle to "If" and our first dance was to "Baby I'm A Want You". Now In 2022 I am still singing the songs of Bread and The Carpenters at karaoke.

I love Bread. The Best of Bread was one of the first albums I ever got. It was a record my older cousin didn’t want anymore and I bought it for one dollar. I played “Every Thing I Own” for my uncles funeral by request from his four boys, one of which sold me that album.
My band also recorded “Mother Freedom” and put it on our record as the only cover song.
They have so many great tunes. One of my favorite non Gates tunes was “Down on My Knees” kind of a rocker for Bread.

"Down On My Knees" was sang by Bread's other lead vocalist James Griffin (RIP). However, David Gates wrote it with him. I think Griffin's ballad's like "Too Much Love", "Look What you've Done" and a couple others demonstrate he had ballads that were as good as a portion of David Gates's ballads. Gates had a little more of the hard rock thing going over Griffin with "Mother Freedom" and "Let Your Love Go".

The thing that surprised me about Bread was while a lot of their songs were lightweight, they also had this rocking side, seen on Mother Freedom, that was rarely seen. Even on a louder number, there was something in Bread’s songs that made them sound different when they got rare airplay.

When my friends and I were in HS in the 70’, we also dismissed Bread as “chick music” and not cool enough for us. Now, when I listen to their music (especially Guitar Man) I can appreciate David Gates song writing genius.

Barry Manilow! My sister loved him & one weekend my parent's were out of town. I had my boyfriend over & my sister kept playing his album over & over again. By the end of the weekend, I was hooked! I went to every concert here in DFW. His was the 1st concert people spent the night outside for, to get tickets. My mom made my brother go with me, because I was 19 & already out on my own, but he was 17 & still living at home. I took my sister. I managed to get all 3 of my husband's to a Barry Manilow concert! That has to be some kind of record.😜💿
"Best of Bread" is one of those albums that I had in vinyl, 8-track, cassette & CD. When I heard that David Gates wrote "Everything I Own" for his dad, after his dad died, I can't listen to that song without crying, especially after losing my dad.😢💜🎶🎵🎼
