They did the slow death after Gabriel left - a group that went stale and the last 3 could not make good rock , Abacab or whatever it was was my biggest disapointment i my life and I bought a lot or records -so thanks drummer in genesis that can do shite songs
Genesis always rocked. Not every song, but every album had enough good stuff that it was worth buying. The same is true for Gabriel's and Collins' solo work.
Hell Invisible Touch was HUGE and loved by everyone... and almost every song was played on the radio, in commercials and even in episodes of Miami Vice.
@@ryan89554 Great album. It was released in 76, so I think I'd argue that this work alone means they do not in any way belong on this list. Also I think Wind and Wuthering is equally terrific, and that came after Trick of the Tail, so I disagree with your statement in that regard.
Amen to that! to me all music genres have nose dived since the late 70s, main reason it has become to corporate, to homogenized and to little artist driven. It peaked in the mid 70s, and by the 90s has gotten worse like a rocket sled on rails to the musical wasteland of today.
Are they the same as “millennials”? Why should music require to be understood. Let it speak for itself. Coherently, unambiguously, sensibly, unsensationally.
How Genesis could be on a list of the "Top 10 Most HATED 1970s Bands" is beyond me, especially for that decade when they were at their best. With the departures of Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett, they "sold out" in the 80s but were still better than a lot of bands.
@@cypherglitch Some people think it was Phil that pushed the band towards more of a pop bent, when every member of Genesis has said it was Tony Banks who had the largest controlling stake in the musical direction of the group. Saw them live (finally) on the Last Domino tour a couple of weeks back. Phenomenal and a packed house of thousands. Phil got insane amounts of love from the crowd. Struggles to walk, but vocally he's as good as he ever was.
Personnally, I liked them better as prog rock band, back in Peter Gabriel and Steve Hacket time, than a pop-rock band afterwards. But thing is they became a top band in either genre and time, regardless of each one's opinion (including mine). So... among most hated bands? My ass!
Love them or hate them, you have to respect what Genesis did. Mastering quite different music styles takes guts and talent. How many other bands went from Prog to New Wave to Synth Pop to Space Rock and did it successfully? Queen and Rush are two others I can think of who adapted to the music styles of the day and remained successful, but there aren't many who did it as well as Genesis. And don't forget FIVE of the members of Genesis also had successful solo careers. How many other bands can say that?
You couldn't be more right. I never cared for Genesis myself, but they were, and still are today, very popular. Comparing Genesis to any of the other acts on this list is laughable.
@@mwright9106 I had the opportunity of meeting Genesis when I was real young. They definitely don't belong on this list and they aren't a one hit wonder. They stood the test of time.
I can't believe Genesis was on this list. I liked both Peter Gabriel AND Phil Collins. The song "Mama" on their first album w/ Phil Colloins was and still is one of my favorite Genesis songs. Now the Archies (Sugar Sugar) would have been a better choice, even though that dreadful song was on the Top Ten back in the day. I agree Disco Duck should have been on there too. Not a grat choice for Rick Dees, who wasn;t such a bad guy in real life.
You are WRONG about Genesis, just flat out wrong. Get older people to do this. WHY is a photo Buckingham/Nicks on this. That was a fantastic duo with a wonderful album. Stevie Nicks' voice is gorgeous with all excellent songs on that slbum. They sold out concerts where I live every time they played here and EVERYONE has that album. They had one album because they joined Fleetwood Mac.
I think that was a limited-edition album. It cost me fifty dollars in a used record shop back in 1988. I really liked to compare it with earlier & later Mac albums, as it was both the genesis of Lindsay & Stevie, as well as what would the most productive era for Mac. Great album...
There’s no way that Genesis belongs on this list. Keyboardist Tony Banks is a under rated talent that while not as flashy he’s every bit as good as Rick Wakeman, or Keith Emerson. And man, that narration voice, ugh….
@Auras Sparsas The Retard But the subject was worst bands of the seventies, not the eighties, which would include all of the albums with Hackett and most of the albums with Gabriel.
@Auras Sparsas The Retard Kind of similar to how Jefferson Starship and especially the Starship, music unfairly tarnished the legacy of Jefferson Airplane.
Genesis, one of the best groups ever. The fact that Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike and the Mechanics, and GTR came out of Genesis, speaks for itself. Supergroups formed from Genesis. Unbeknownst to me why they appeared on this list.
@@allywilkeforsenate They were a band founded by GuiTaRists Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis) and Steve Howe (ex-Yes, Aisa). They had this one hit in 1986 titled "When the Heart Rules the Mind".
Screwed over a sell out Glasgow gig. Cancelled completely. They reorganised the London ones...but thought screw Glasgow! Haven't listened to them since and never will. Screw them all
Genesis on a list like this?? They were awesome as a prog rock band with Gabriel at the front. The switch over to more radio friendly music with Collins as a singer worked like a charm and they have so many great songs.
Are you out of your mind?? Genesis is and was one of the most followed, creative, respected and best selling bands of all time. The Lamb, Selling England, Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, Duke were one of the best prog albums, not just of the 70's but of all time, included in several best of lists by several critics and magazines. You probably did zero research and just included them because the band changed their direction after Gabriel left. If anything they won even more fans as they progressed.

yes, but when Peter Gabriel left they spent most of their efforts trying to figure out how to write generic pop songs to keep themselves in the charts. I still recall hearing the guys from pink floyd mocking them in a radio interview back when they had the hit song "i cant dance" on the radio. everyone was laughing at it even though they made a ton of cash, their integrity was gone. it rolled down Salisbury hill and into the gutter.
I couldn't believe Genesis was on the list. The Captain and Tenniel were OK too. Certainly not terrible. Both of these bands were very popular at the time.
Yeah... to put Genesis on the list just jab the whole video clip in the trash bin. Genesis has no place in that list, it's just ridiculous and silly at the same time.
He left in 75. Still, even when Collins took over, Genesis was a well respected band. It wasn't until Phil Collins went solo in the 80s and started releasing all those schmaltzy songs that people turned from his music.
Brian i have never been out ANYWHERE and heard someone say lets jam some Genesis. Peter Gabriel had to dress like a girl. It was the only way to get talked about. It wasn't the music.
@@B.G.216 Genesis wasn't for the average jam. Just like Rush, Dream Theater, or Jethro Tull, Genesis performed music with polyrhythms, key changes, and guitar riffs in constant variance. Hell Invisible Touch was HUGE and loved by everyone... and almost every song was played on the radio, in commercials and even in episodes of Miami Vice.
Genesis’ progressive era was amazing. They’re in a totally different league than your other picks. There are a lot of other potential sappy untalented pop artists you could have chosen.

@Auras Sparsas The Retard Duchess, Abacab, Misunderstanding, Man On The Corner, No Reply At All, Turn It On Again... what a fantastic collection of great songs during that concert. The comments section totally negated the significance of the booing. One really terrible song Who Dunnit does not negate the rest of the concert. And that was a badly performed No Reply.
The GENESIS TRICK OF THE TAIL album was the best album where all the songs were fantastic and a type of phantasmagorical trip in a magical world. Although many of these songs may be considered bad, the beauty was that they all "took a chance" and expressed themselves without reservation and they made a mark in the rock and roll world even if just for one time.
Agreed on Genesis not belonging on this list. Granted, I was a teen in the 80's and that's when I discovered them (thru MTV), but I can sure bet they wouldn't have made it to the 80's had they sucked in the 70's. Peter Gabriel wouldn't have had a career, nor would Phil Collins, Tony Banks, or Mike Rutherford.
The first side of their self-titled album, "Genesis" (1983), is freaking genius. _Mama, Home By The Sea, and That's All._ I literally wore the tape out from overplay.
@@porkbelly0713 Agreed. Also, no one really hated The Captain & Tennille or Edison Lighthouse. did they? Perfectly acceptable Top 40 fodder. May as well put Elton John on the list if that's where you draw the line.

Same here - 1970 (Trespass) to 1976 (Wind and Wuthering) was some of the best prog ever made. Then they changed their style to softrock/pop, but still with some of the elements from their past present in the music. Some of the prog-fans never did forgive them that change in style, but to put Genesis on a list like this, is sacrilege!
The buggles were not hated - far from it, they are quoted as a major influence for many bands, and of course Trevor Horn went to to run ZTT records and produced Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and ABC etc, who were *major* bands in the 80s, and some of the other artists mentioned weren't even well know, so hardly some of the "most hated".

Dude, Genesis is one of the most legendary prog rock bands of all time. It's a shame they went pop, but that wasn't until the mid 80's. As a 70's band they put out classic album after classic album, from Foxtrot and Selling England By the Pound, to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Trick of the Tail, their 70s output is Hall of Fame worthy. to lump them in with a bunch of one-hit wonders is ridiculous.
@@lastinline1958 I think they still put out several great albums without Gabriel, but I agree that Hackett's departure was the backbreaker. And Then There were Three was decent, and so was Abacab, but it wasn't the legendary stuff of Foxtrot, Selling England or Lamb.
I'm not sure where you're getting your opinion on "Billy, don't be a Hero" but nothing about the song seemed funny to us. It hit home to a lot of young lovers during that time, when a lot of men didn't return from the War.
So, wait a minute, Genesis is on the list but, Helen Reddy " I am woman", Paul Anka, "Having my Baby," and Starland vocal band" afternoon delight" are not? I think you had one too many Pina Coladas.
And lets add Kisses for Me by Brotherhood of Man to the list. I thought afternoon delight was going to be number one on this list as soon as I saw the title of the video lol.
The band went from Prog Rock under Peter Gabriel to Pop under Phil Collins. They're two different bands. The split was bound to happen. Peter Gabriel got all the kudos even though everyone put in the work. And Peter Gabriel was getting too abstract for the rest of them. If you like early Genesis, you like Peter Gabriel's solo albums. If you like later Genesis, you like Phil Collins' solo albums.
@@SidneyBroadshead I think the we hate Genesis brigade, of which I am one, really dislike the split and feel that Phil just blatantly sold our to get some money or that they never really were prog and just did it to get known and then left that scene. Clearly they are all excellent musicians. When they get berrated, I think it is over some exceptionally comercial pop music in later years and some of the earlier fans feel betrayed.
Calling them crappy is giving them a compliment...these shitty musicians today just escaped and destroyed what we know as music(As was once said about Rap,giving a bunch of guys and girls a chance to sing when they can't)...Just so tragic.

Genesis and The Buggles were actually CULT bands firstly and foremostly. THEY are just so-called "one hit wonders" from an ULTRA MAINSTREAM perspective.
But it was perfect in the premiere episode of WKRP In Cincinnati, sung by a mock version of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Especially with the needle scratching it as the station format changed mid song.
Genesis transcended the 70s decade. They make music which appeals to multigenerations and multi-genres. They have some of the most beautiful love songs and yet they were still able to pull off a quirky song like, "I Can't Dance" in the 90s. I love their diversity.

After the Buggles disbanded, the two main members joined the band Yes and made an outstanding album called Drama. And Trevor Horn later on became one of the most in demand producers in rock and pop.

How Genesis could be on a list of the "Top 10 Most HATED 1970s Bands" is beyond me, especially for that decade when they were at their best. With the departures of Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett, they "sold out" in the 80s but were still better than a lot of bands.
It what phil collins that was hated for some reason.
I saw Phil Collins on the invisible touch tour of 1986.
A phenomenal show!
Personnally, I liked them better as prog rock band, back in Peter Gabriel and Steve Hacket time, than a pop-rock band afterwards. But thing is they became a top band in either genre and time, regardless of each one's opinion (including mine). So... among most hated bands? My ass!

The problem was not the band, but its fans inflicting pain on the rest of us.... hence the hate.
Exactly, they were awesome
Love them or hate them, you have to respect what Genesis did. Mastering quite different music styles takes guts and talent. How many other bands went from Prog to New Wave to Synth Pop to Space Rock and did it successfully? Queen and Rush are two others I can think of who adapted to the music styles of the day and remained successful, but there aren't many who did it as well as Genesis. And don't forget FIVE of the members of Genesis also had successful solo careers. How many other bands can say that?

The 70's was an interesting decade to say the least and the diversity within the rock music genre was definitely at it's peak. You had everything from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath to the Carpenters and Bread.....and everything in between. Oh, and what was considered a cultural blight at the time, disco. It was a pretty good decade if you just wanted to just go 'do your own thing'. As someone who was there AND remembers it, I would take the 70's over today in a heartbeat.
& even tho we were “hopelessly razist” everyone got along much better then today, had every group you could think of represented & life was good, whole lot of lies bringing our nation down, it’s time us old timers call bs on these kids who “promise will get communism right....this time” I’d say craps bad enough as is, time to pull out the B squad & let the A team back in
Right on
@Black Swan Mandolin you better believe it I’d like to see those videos now the garbage now gets me sick
@Ivan Schlotzky love love Motown
Disco was hated by many but I loved the music style and it was way better than the current rap trash.
Most of these are just one-hit wonders. You forgot Starland Vocal Band. And GENESIS?!?!? ARE YOU INSANE?!?!?
Judging artists by how many "hits" they have is stupid anyway a-hole.
Correct title:
70's bands with One hit wonders and terrible other songs.
Sorry, Barb. It's a well-known fact that everyone liked Afternoon Delight whether they will admit it or not. Yes, EVERYONE. If anyone needs proof of this, watch the movie Anchorman. ;)~
Genesis and The Buggles were actually CULT bands firstly and foremostly. THEY are just so-called "one hit wonders" from an ULTRA MAINSTREAM perspective.
@@billkeithchannel How much do YOU even KNOW about THESE bands and their OTHER MATERIAL jerk?
Any 1970s disco band could be added, as far as I’m concerned. The pre- Disco Bee Gees were actually very good.
GENESIS WAS THE BOMB !!! LOVED THEM THEN AND NOW
I have nothing against Genesis & they shouldn't be on this list😉
Being on this list is a true miscarriage of justice.
No list is complete without the song, "Having My Baby."
That song was ridiculous!! I agree,George..
But it was perfect in the premiere episode of WKRP In Cincinnati, sung by a mock version of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Especially with the needle scratching it as the station format changed mid song.
I agree! That was one of the worst songs ever recorded!
MOST DEFINITELY!
The dumbest and most inappropriate song EVER !
Genesis transcended the 70s decade. They make music which appeals to multigenerations and multi-genres. They have some of the most beautiful love songs and yet they were still able to pull off a quirky song like, "I Can't Dance" in the 90s. I love their diversity.

Im not saying all these songs are good...but still...
All of which equally Suck!
gimme dat ding..Mmm catchy !

I disagree with Genesis being on this list. Theyre an amazing band and Phil Collins is an incredible drummer. Also the Pina Colada song by Rupert Holmes is a classic.
Yes, a drummer, not a singer.
GENESIS
👎👎👎👎👎👎
please check out actual real good drummers, and then reassess your statement about Collins. Louis Belson, Art Blakey, Neil Peart, John Bonham. perhaps even Carter Beauford
@@corbinangelo3359 he's adequate, you don;t always want a drum solo, or a showy drummer in a band, sometimes adequate is good enough.
@@mrljgibson i would even go further than 'good enough' when describing Phil Collins, He is certainly an amazing artist and musician. In my limited knowledge i would even place him in the top 100 drummers of all times, but certainly not in the top 10.
My personal believe that Gensis has made this list is that OP had a few run ins with Gensis fanatics, and simply enjoys a healthy discussion about differences in musical tastes. ;-)
(i loved the first 12 albums of Genesis btw)
I agree with everyone on this list except Genesis. Until they went pop in the 80's, they rocked and was a fresh breath of air
Pretty much ruined by any of the ones they let Phil Collins sing on, he should stick to drumming.
Genesis definitely does NOT belong on this list. They had lots of great songs before Peter Gabriel left
@@redsox3459 Wow! I had no idea that Peter Gabriel was part of Genesis! I always thought he was a solo artist. I kind of like "SledgeHammer". Phil Collins looked better in the 70's, before he went mostly bald.

The so-called "hated bands from the 70's" are better than anything from 2000 until now
"Love Will Keep Us Together" won a Grammy as number one song of the year in 1975. Not so hated. Choosing "Muskrat Love" to pick on was a bit of a cheat.
I like America's version of Muskrat Love. I never knew the Cpt. & Tenille did this song.
@@scotth6814 Please.
The band "America" did a cover of Muskrat Love, and it is on one of their "best of" albums.
Number 1 song of the year - but still annoying!
Big deal. They won a useless award. They still were pop garbage.
I think it should be noted that The BUGGLES, and OTHER groups of the New Wave genre, were hated mainly because THEY seemed WIERD at the time - not because of their ARTISTIC QUALITY, and THEY were mostly hated by HIPPIES. Hippies were still around at the time and THEY didn't like THAT music was changing again and making THEM feel old and outmoded and not so modern and progressive anymore.
Remember geoff downes from the buggles he was in king crimson asia yes so he is legendary
The Cars helped usher in that vibe...they were Alternative before there was such a thing...
It pretty much took Blondie and The Cars to break New Wave/post-punk into the American popular mainstream, and THOSE two groups could not aptly be called "One Hit Wonders" either (like they so lovingly apply to The Buggles and Devo) because THEY had MULTIPLE hits.

I grew up in the 70s. When I meet people these days who envy me, talking about all the great music back then, I agree. Then I play them Pina Colada and MacArthur Park. MacArthur Park was written by of the greatest pop song writers of all time, Jimmy Webb.

Never knew anybody that hated Genesis
As I recollect, they had a pretty strong following in those days.
Always hated them

I know. They were my first concert and Collins and Gabriel were phenomenal. They played a solid 3hrs without having a cover band.
“The young ones” did.

I think that Genesis and The Buggles are both grossly out of place in this video, among all those other acts.
Genesis is iconic. Surely whoever created this video is just trolling. Either that or they like shitty pop music and wouldn't know real music if it bit em on the ass

Genesis is one of the most talented and entertaining groups of all time. Album sales and longitivity prove it. Its laughable to put them on this lst.
Here's one. Debbie Boone. One-hit wonder with the song "You Light Up My Life" which was from the movie of the same name. It played e-n-d-l-e-s-s-l-y in 1977-78. Every radio station had it on. It even was rubbed in when my junior high school class (aka middle school) used it as the theme for our graduation. I was in the band and we had to play the wretched song at the graduation ceremony.
I second, third, and forth that one!
Oh man, I was just going to write the very same. You couldn't go fifteen minutes without hearing that song and every time it felt like a personal punishment.
I hope you Funked it up at the graduation😎
We had a radio station in Baltimore changing format back then and in between, for an entire 3 day weekend they played You Light up my Life non stop. Crazy. Hadn't thought about that nightmare in years. 😐
I loved it, although I was only 4 at the time
Trevor horn was incredibly talented. The buggles may not have written the best song but his work with pet shop boys, yes and most importantly, Franky goes to Hollywood. I'd take him off the list.
He also worked with Yes on their 90125 album
He really f-d over Frankie. Read Holly Johnson's book " there's a bone in my flute" . I actually did like "Drama" tho....
No, it was a mistake to add Genesis to this list.
Genesis went through major changes if you really knew the history of the band, you would probably resend your opinion of Genesis.
You need to edit your video.
@Jody Dube Jon Anderson is my favourite singer
Agreed.
Genesis doesn’t belong here- they did have some clunkers, but had more hits that overwhelm the clunkers.
C & T- everyone hates “Muskrat Love”- everyone! But the duo again had plenty of hits that outweigh that one bad song.
I like Muskrat love when played by America. Not so much the words but the music.
I didn't. I hated In The Ghetto at the time
Genesis was the worst. For spawning Phil Collins, a sore from which we 80s children will NEVER recover.
Genesis did not deserve to be on this list. Rupert Holmes is terrific as well.
Agreed. Genesis had so many great songs.
Rupert holms song. What are we going to do about him. Is a lot worse than the Pina colada song I would say for sure.
"Love Grows" was a UK #1 - I don't see why anybody would hate the band.
it's a fantastic song
Exactly Great song
Yeah, Genesis has no business being on this list.
Absolutely 💯 correct.
Can't even find ten good bands these days
Why not? Then neither Captain and Tennille then much better imho.
Top 40 music from the 70s. We listened to what they played on the radio or TV because we had few options. You could buy a record, 8 track, or cassette. No RUclips or internet. The 70s rocked anyway and the music was better than whatever they're playing now. Dark Side of the Moon 1973. Remember that masterpiece? I certainly do. @@kelleychilton2524 well, that era yes. But there are great psychedelic bands now, even more so, to me, than then, just less mainstream. And hippies? There are cool, progressive and peaceful people in all music and walks of life since the 70s - just styles and attitudes change. They didn't really go away, some changed with the times. Tears for fears and U2 are not called "hippies" but their attitudes and lyrics and outspokenness are basically the same thing in the 80s that the hippies did in the 60s.
So the person talking I would guess was still 20 to 25 years from being born when the 70s was occurring.

2) Billy don't be a hero, while not a popular song I don't recall anybody really hating it other than being kind of bland pop.
3) Edison Lighthouse was definitely not hated. Loves grows was ridiculously popular in certain circles

My thoughts exactly. Describing a band as awful who managed to have a chart topping song is great irony. If they were truly awful, we would never have heard of them.
After the Buggles disbanded, the two main members joined the band Yes and made an outstanding album called Drama. And Trevor Horn later on became one of the most in demand producers in rock and pop.
I'm sorry, but the album Drama SUCKED. Yes's best albums were Fragile, Close to The Edge, Relayer (Moraz replaced Wakeman and did a magnificent job), Tales of Topographic Oceans and Going For the One (Wakeman and Andersen Came back).
