I am not a person who can usually sit down and just watch “sports”, but I binged this entire video from beginning to end. What a beautiful competition! The camaraderie between the contestants was touching and the commentary was very informative for even those not well versed in skateboarding. I am looking forward to seeing more official videos of this year’s Olympic events and ceremonies released on RUclips. It has been a struggle to find actual clips of what has been reported arbitrarily in the news and trying to seek to just the relevant part of videos was unfortunately a pure nightmare on Peacock.
The saddest thing is Funa always struggled with nerves in competition, it feels like she became too nervous to think properly. She didn’t do her usual tricks but instead went for a big gap to crook and wasted ALL her attempts. I notice that other team Japan skaters between attempts and lands they would go over to their coach and talk. Funa kept going back to the top of the ramp, tunnel vision waiting for her next attempt. Before you know it she had 2 balls, then 4 meant she was out of podium, then one more was 5 flops. It’s sad but if she had gone to her coaches between attempts like the others they would have advised her to get some safe scores down.
It’s because of the scoring, they score the simplest grind on the biggest rail on the 80s it makes doing something more tech on something smaller or a risky flip trick down a gap pointless. It’s why big tricks is always most technical thing they can do on the biggest ledge or rail.
Isn't that sort of the point of the street category though? There is park if you want something different. There is no freestyle, vert or big air in the Olympics.
I wish skaters wouldn't grab their boards and run to get set up in the middle of their runs. It would be way cooler if they didn't stop at all during a run ... that is the art of skating ... I am not a fan of the "packaging" effect that the Olympic park has on skating. But that's just me!
