    I'm so glad that your daughter talked with you about keeping this particular plant. I loved this video. I learned a great deal during the time that I spent watching/listening/learning. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us.

    Hi Roger, your daughter has your quick nature! Good for Hannah for giving her ol' Dad a go, she had many good points 😁!
    Excited about the year update, and why not start a new set! Good stuff..... Kelly

      These comparison updates are quite fiddly to put together especially Pt 1 as it has twice as many plants as the others.

    Hope all goes well with the moss Roger. It goes well with the Asian slippers seeing as that is how they grow in the wild.....debris etc., and never in the earth. Will be interesting to see the hopeful progress of the Miltonia.

      Most of the remaining roots were aerial - they will either start growing quite quickly, or they will rot due to the transition. We shall see soon.

    I have also placed live moss around 10 of my orchids as a top dressing to see if it is beneficial to their growth. I took photos and will compare them in a few weeks. However, I have to wonder if the daily spraying of the moss will be the biggest factor. Time will tell.

    The sun never sets on Miltonia sunset...(and hopefully it won't now!). My requests are impossible... Hancockii and the one you trimmed all the downward canes on with the other 100 canes heading skywards.... you'd have to take them outside to film them.... I'll go with the new Nobile and the newest Brassia's they might *just* manage to fit.

  • @michaelmccarthy4077

    With tightly packed sphagnum it isn't so much about it drying faster but it "self squeezes" so it isn't sopping wet when you water and wet for a long time, it is easier to keep "evenly damp".
    Now, I'll admit I half expected at some point for you to say, "that's going on a mount" as well.

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  4 года назад

      I did give it a thought - but with the 'clear out' things have reversed. I now don't have much spare hanging space but do have room on shelves.

    • @annebroder9902
      @annebroder9902 4 года назад

      Michael McCarthy Yes I also heard this from professional Phal growers.

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 4 года назад

      @@GrowingOrchidswithRoger I was thinking about that, actually. Wondering if you had given thought to trying to combine the plants on the shelves and take one out and put in a longer rack for mounts. (I still like the idea of having a ceiling to floor rack that could somehow swivel 360 degrees so you could easily use the front and back side)

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  4 года назад

      The mounts are difficult in Winter because of the grow-lights - I don't want the plants too close so everything has to be re-arranged. As we get into March, I can get the hanging racks back up where they normally go.

    Ok today December 10 I watered my oncidium Sharry baby sweet fragrance for the first time after putting her back in 100% dry sphagnum moss tightly packed. I do see signs that moisture not going to where it is need. A few of the big plump psubulbs have wrinkles. Keeping my eye on them to see if these wrinkles continue. If they do I will fiddle around with the moss. Now for the side experiment I watered her for the second time today. It is loosely placed in a much smaller pot.

    I had one of those during my 'heavy handed watering' phase. Alas, the roots rotted before I came to my senses! 🤣

      Too little, the plant will probably survive - too much and it will probably die.

    • @laurafedora5385

      Trish Polk I repotted my nelly Isler from moss to a moss and bark mix and it’s really sulking. It was actually doing quite well in straight moss, I only did it because it was new to me and I didn’t get a chance to inspect the roots and it was starting to put some new roots down 😬

    • @TrishsOrchidLife
      @TrishsOrchidLife 4 года назад

      Mine is currently in a moss/bark mix. I may repot her to moss this weekend and see if that helps get her going.

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger

      Ed was only trying it on Paphs that naturally grow on the ground in 'litter' (not in the soil) so it would be quite natural for those sorts. Most epiphytes grow on branches with moss but then they are also attached to the bark.

    • @laurafedora5385

      Roger's Orchids I was really expecting to find rotting roots on my Nelly Isler since it was grown in 100% moss, but they were actually in great shape! 🤔
      I never know what these plants want to be happy! 😆

      Orchids will grow in most media as long as watering is adjusted to suit. But many roots object to major changes to the media.
