    IIRC, ADSB transmits heading so you could show a vector from the dot on the display... Longer vector for higher speed.

You have any source for this claim that "it's all editable python?" Cause I'm seeing nothing suggesting that is even remotely true. The idea of a Python scriptable vfx solution that is free sounds great to me but at the moment it doesn't seem like that claim holds water.

    1. Could you replace the dots with arrows indicating the aircraft's heading?
    2. A trail behind each aircraft
    3. A button to silence the alarm if you acknowledged an aircraft
    4. The whole thing is based on GPS, right? Like the aircraft send their GPS coordinates? If so, is there a GPS on your unit so it always knows where exactly the centre of the radar should be?
    5. Integrate this thing into an RC remote. Then send that data via telemetry to your flight controller and show it in the OSD. :D

    TCAS provides input to the flight controls where if they had required not just ADS-B out but also ADS-B in all planes flying with it would be safer there are ADS-B receivers that can connect to an IPAD and with an aviation data base like foreflight you see a moving map and all ADS-B equipped planes too. Plus it has terrain clearance instrument approaches weather. Man I had to keep all this stuff i a 50 lb brief case. and update it every two weeks.

      Definitely a good idea. Like firealarms, the worst firealarm is the most sensitive one, since you will start ignoring/disabling it.

    @PureGlide 4 года назад +3

    Awesome stuff! I like that it's a nice self contained unit. I agree, it is a bit of a problem not having affordable ADSB receivers in aircraft, however it's getting cheaper, quickly. TCAS is not necessarily the answer, it's just one solution that happens to cost a LOT as it's certified as you mentioned. There are cheaper options such as FLARM displays which can give a similar radar display in the cockpit as to what you built, and it's not as expensive to buy or install. And importantly you can feed the ADSB signals into FLARM. I'm buying an ADSB IN device for my FLARM that's $500 for example. TCAS is designed for big planes going fast that never go near each other. FLARM works well for other aircraft such as gliders, helicopters and small planes. Basically TCAS and FLARM are providing the collision detection algorithms + displays, and alerting (and avoidance directions in the case of TCAS). Technically we are allowed 'portable' equipment in the cockpit (e.g. Cell phones, tablets etc) so there's no reason you couldn't build one of these designed to sit on top of the dash board. And all completely legal, as long as it's not permanently installed and follow the guidelines for portable equipment.

    • @xjet
      @xjet  4 года назад +5

      Yes, FLARM is a great option, the OGN is even better (because it's cheaper). The fact that so few GA pilots equip their aircraft with such options and that such options aren't mandated by regulators (whereas they're busy trying to force transponders and RemoteID on RC model and drone fliers) speaks volumes to the hypocrisy surrounding the "risk based regulations" that abound at the moment.

  • @philplane3181
    @philplane3181 4 года назад +2

    Making an ADSB receiver is cheap and has been done many times before. Having an ADSB out transponder is expensive. A large part of the expense is certification, mostly because for IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) aircraft in controlled airspace ATC (Air Traffic Control) provide separation between aircraft so they need to know where you are, what altitude you are, and where you are heading and at what speed. That has to be accurate enough to maintain the separation required by the regulations.
    So basically, because big airliners have demanding requirements if I want ADSB out in my microlight that can barely make it beyond visual range of the airfield I have to pay airline prices for airline quality with airline certification.
    A sensible alternative would be allowing VFR (Visual Flight Rules) aircraft to use uncertified (but compliant) ADSB as long as they stay outside controlled airspace. Then I could spend hundreds of dollars for poor mans TCAS instead of tens of thousands for the real thing.
    But that's a sensible alternative. Unlikely to be acceptable to bureaucrats.

    • @spency787
      @spency787 4 года назад

      Hi Phil, you used the term “microlight”, does that mean you are in the UK? If so you can legally now use a non certified gps source coupled to a transponder to be ADSB out. I have a Trig TT21 with an input source from a Pilot Aware Rosetta unit so I can now “see” other transponder equipped aircraft, FLARM traffic, other Pilot Aware units and some gliders.
      Not cheap, but not unachievable in terms of cost.

    Next stage: equip your RC plane with ADS-B in and autopilot, and interpret nearby threats such that the autopilot avoids being in the near path of an ADS-B source... You're welcome!

    That's very elegant. When I got into RC in the late 1970s (in England) we were on 27 MHz - the same as the invading and unloved CB radio boys - so we used to have a band monitor switched on whenever anybody dared to risk a flight.
    Sure enough, you'd just be steering into a monster thermal when your servos would hit their end-stops and you'd hear: "Eeeh, breaker, breaker, this is t'Yorkshire F*ckwit. Ey up. Just 'ad a bacon butty an' Barnsley brew. Anyone got 'is bastid ears on?"
    They all used illegally powerful imported gear; you just had to hope that Rubber Duck (a dweeb called Nigel) and his 'big rig' (a rusty ex-Post Office van) had driven out of range before your plane hit the ground.
    The only problem I can see with this, Bruce, is a flood of complaints and lawsuits from Uncivil Aviation pilots objecting to having their movements tracked by ordinary members of the public. Ooh, privacy issues. Scary stuff these days.
    So... the CAA will require every owner of such a handy device to be registered, insured, and readily identifiable in case anybody wants to sue. Maintaining the database will naturally incur a modest annual administration charge of £20.00 or so...

    I think you misunderstand TCAS Bruce, though you're generally right about the bullshit certification.
    TCAS is an extra system above and beyond ADS-B in, where the system provides a solution to avoid a collision.
    TCAS therefore has a more complicated software layer than just presenting the position of surrounding aircraft.
    Whilst ADS-B in and displays that show the position of nearby craft are stupidly prices, TCAS is a whole new level of stupid.
    Many modern avionics devices feature ADS-B in, even at the low end, but still have obscene pricing.
    There are 3rd party products that do the task more affordably, one example..
    www.sportys.com/foreflight-sentry-mini-ads-b-receiver.html
    As you have clearly demonstrated, using some basic parts it's not difficult to cobble together something that does a fine job.

    Nothing to stop a GA pilot having portable equipment in board that's not certified. Apps on tablets provide a good plan B if on-board systems fail as vacuume operated mechanical gyros are not as reliable as modern solid state kit. Carrying a quadrupled autopilot running logging provides a cheap black box

    Great content as usual. You may have already seen this but just in case, in the U.K. and some of Europe (gradually expanding coverage) we have a system called 'Pilotaware' pilotaware.com that is an aid and a very great step towards conspicuity and awareness of potential conflicts. I'm sure they would be interested in spreading the coverage if allowed by regulators?

    The reason why you do not have a TCAS system is because unlike for models, there is a paper trail associated with parts, development, certification.
    This is the reason why if you go to buy even something as simple as a seat from an airplane, you will get a hefty price tag, because you can view the history as to where that seat has been, which aircraft and the like with its serial number.
    And the development to get something certified is also very expensive for manned aviation and slow, so TCAS as we know it today costs between 25k to 150k USD per aircraft, because of this slow certification and paper trail.
    And one of the reasons this process exists, is because it is a price that was also paid in blood, before this was strictly enforced, you had incidents like the Partnair flight 394, that was caused by an "uncertified" / pirated bolt on the rudder that couldn't take the strain.

    Bruce, I understand its a Pi-3 or 4? Aside from that , I can't find any references to parts required? Can you advise of the parts required to make the device and you mentioned a website for programming same? I went to the Banggood link thinking it would be there?

    Don't know about ADSB but where I live (Scotland) the police helicopter doesn't show up on Flight Radar 24, perhaps so they can creep up unnoticed on villains and criminals. And drone operators and aeromodellers.

    Curious, if an imagined threat cost $2000. How much did they fine the pilots for their potentially deadly errors? You would assume that the real aircraft poses a known deadly threat to themselves and any innocent people who are unfortunate enough to be in the area. The fine those two pilots received must be at least $100,000 each minimum. Please post the amount if released.

    As a sailor I often noticed that navy ships do not send out an AIS signal comparable to what airplanes do. Airforce planes may not send out the signal. I live close by an airport with both airforce and public traffic and many times at night you hear an airplane which does not show up on flightradar.com(public transport is not allowed to fly at night overhere)

      With the small whip antenna I can receive aircraft out to 60Km or so but I have turned down the gain because there is no point in tracking aircraft that pose no risk to modelflying so in its current form it tracks aircraft out to about 15Km or so.

      @@xjet Ok, that wondaful. I take an interest in it because someday if I find the money, I like to build an aircraft not get aircraft, but I want to build my own person light jet. I beat a small scale model of it many years ago out of Cardboard. Now I am living in the USA I wan to see if I can fulfill that dream. I agree with you when you said you should not have to pay a high primum for safety. I really like your simple solution, and wish you can get it into general aviation aircrafts.

    Nice job Bruce. Looks much less load intensive than the map method I was doing. Once you have it up, if you don't want to add the option, we can add some code to ignore a selected adsb. Then pilots could add this to their aircraft as a cheap option without all the bureaucracy you mentioned. That can also be used with a button to turn off alarm sound.

    I wouldn't mind one of those things to be mandatory for every drone pilot. It's one tool, very usefull and not expensive. Also easy to check for police and every idiot can understand it. Way better then registering drones or all that other crap.

    You neeed to patent this in NZ ,Aus , USA. Im sure CASA will have issues with it and tell you its not approved and needs to be certified and their simple little minds cant cope with it.
