Joe you are one of the greatest guitarist on the planet right now, that is no doubt…but you are setting your self apart in my mind, teaching your versions. The peoples champ 🙌
This is the kind of tutorial I've been looking for! To have an insight into the mind of a great player, rather than just a "how-to" is so beneficial. Thank you!
Every minute I spend with Joe is time well spent. Every lesson is enjoyable, enriching, and eye opening. This one is no exception. I love how Joe brings out these tiny details (leave out the 6th, maybe not that tiny but anyway) but the lessons always feel lite and yet focused. Tyvm
joe, thanks for sharing this skillful lesson literally i'm ecstatic to receive this notification "cocaine lesson". I'm gonna learn this anyhow at any cost
Just got my first taste of Joe Robinson. First "Cocaine", and then "People get ready". Now I'm hooked. Just spent many $$ getting the music and I'm already working on this amazing stuff. It's hard to impress me Joe, but you've definitely got me sitting up straight. It hits my honey spot all the way to the core.
Thank you so much, Joe! You are a treasure and a great mentor to us all. I love not just your playing and your original compositions but the clarity and passion of your speeches. It is a huge shame on our world, and blows my mind that your videos do not reach more people. Love from Hungary and if you don't mind would you play Flaming arches in your next live stream? I am also curious to see similar lessons on your somewhat older compositions just to refreshen our memory on your previous albums.
Saw Palmisano's breakdown. Commented on his site that it's about time Joe's getting the recognition he deserves. Gracious of you to give him a shout out back.
REALLY well done. So insightful to hear what you say after having discovered you through Michael. True teachers understand “how they got there” and are able to share it clearly. You do that!
Very cool. Joe, I've loved your version on RUclips Premium and in favs and frequent rotation, enjoying yours over, dare I say, EC album version. I thought, "cool, this guy is going to teach Joe's version". So, surprised when I see this guy nail your version, to then realize you are The Joe Robinson.
Thank you for such an insightful approach/mind-set on how to practice, and play, this song classic song. As a former drummer myself, and basement/couch acoustic player, I always strive to lay down the groove and establish the pocket in my playing. Your tips have been very helpful Great stuff ( from Ontario/Canada).
Joe that’s class lad you have my head crazy with scales and journals and the rest on invisible technique any of you guys out there want a coaching course joes the man check it out !! Great song to learn it’s the closest I’m Gona get to cocaine these days 😀them days are gone !! Thanks joe !! Brian Ireland 🇮🇪
When I learned how to play this song, I learned Clapton's version, in the key of E. I have been trying off and on to get JJs version down but no luck. I've always liked the way JJs sounds a bit better though. This is gonna be fun learning it again. Thank you so much, Joe!! ☮❤☮ Oh,by the way, beautiful Stratocaster!!
I just hit sub for you dude! I saw Michael Palmisano's vid covering your rendition of this classic tune and thought "I gotta follow that guy!" Great arrangement!
Thanks for this lesson. I like particularly liked your single string wah wah lesson. I have played guitar for for a long time. Stopped for a while and am getting back into it again, and trying to learn and get past the road blocks I reached with improvising. Anyway, I have scoured a lot of RUclips lessons on this tune because the part that fascinates me most is the beautiful funky scratchy, rhythm lines played by Reggie Young on the original JJ Cale version. It is likely something quite basic for the accomplished guitarist, but the technique to do that seems hard to me, some sort of muted chord comping and hammer-on technique . Your wah wah approach has given me a bit of direction on rhythmic approaches to try to approximate this.
First of all thanks very much for your time in giving the benefit of your wonderful playing and advice. in the chorus you play some intersting chord shapes as you descend. Are you able to clarify what is going on please. Very telling advice about a the difference between mentor and teacher. I have spent ages and a lot of money on teachers without really developing a repertoire!
Hi JOE! I'm not a guitarist,I've tried in the past,it's hard. Persistance is not enough, every guitarist need a lot of technique and talent. I remained only a fan and a listener. I think that with videos like this You will have a positive influence on every future guitarist, who will one day mention your name as their mentor. Great!!🎸👍
Since you already removed the volume knob you need to check out the Music Man Cutlass Series!! It`s a Strat type with the same exact 2 knobs, only that the knobs are a bit closer. Plus they look and sound amazing! :)
Helo Joe, mi name is Miguel, vivo en la Republica de El Salvador, no speak English, te felicito por la ejecucion de Cocaine podrias hacer un tutorial. Gracias
Hi, Joe. You have emphasized keeping the hands relaxed while playing the instrument. How much strength do you put in to your right thumb while playing the boom chick? Does the thumb stays as relaxed as possible or does it depends on the nuance?
When developing the right hand boom chick it does take quite a while to build strength and most importantly: co-ordination. But there isn't much force involved, I am playing very lightly. The thumb always stays very relaxed. However, when we are 'exercising' the thumb, you might feel it start to get fatigued - this is normal - we are building a new skill. The most important thing is to stay relaxed and just keep working on getting the thumb comfortable playing the patterns. I hope that answers your question! We always want both hands to be as relaxed as possible, the left hand is constantly playing with the minimum necessary force, the right hand plays with a very relaxed technique but can go from whisper quiet to nice and loud - but while staying relaxed.
Cheers Brian, I tried it a handful of times but went back to the J Rockett Archer, which has been my main live overdrive for a while. I try to avoid turning my overdrive on and off during a gig and the Archer (or any Klon type pedal) just works better for me in terms of setting it once and using the guitar volume control for gain.
I would suggest learning one song at a time. Start with easier songs. As you build your repertoire you'll learn how chord progressions are structured and you'll learn to play a variety of chords. From there you can learn to figure out the key a song is in, and what chords are being played, first by trial and error, eventually by ear. You can learn songs from chord charts, TAB, video lessons, however you'd like.
Pretty sure I mention it in the video, it was built for me in the Fender Custom Shop in 2014, based on a 63 Strat with a modern radius and larger frets, pickups by Mick Brierley in Australia. There is more info if you download the gear PDF. All the best

Awesome lesson Joe. Really like your approach and your ability to teach. Excellent point about a “mentor.”

When I clicked on this link, I expected a way different tutorial 🤣
Hi. Its cool! Your link about gear is not open. Please tell exact your Strat model and specs. Thanks!
The link to gear is here. The model is a Fender Custom Shop 63' Strat.

Thanks for the lesson! Why don't you use the Nobels live?
Cheers Brian, I tried it a handful of times but went back to the J Rockett Archer, which has been my main live overdrive for a while. I try to avoid turning my overdrive on and off during a gig and the Archer (or any Klon type pedal) just works better for me in terms of setting it once and using the guitar volume control for gain.
And the reason I don't use the Archer in the studio much is the mid-range can be pretty bold, a little too much for recording, at least for what I do.
Cool Joe! Thanks for the quick reply. I might try that strat volume pot mod as well
Joe. Have you ever played a guitar with fanned frets? If so, could you share your viewpoint? The pros & cons?
Yes!
How much guitar chords are & how to find the right chords while the playing songs or any instrument especially *GUITAR

How do I find the 6th and omit it pls?
Anyone knows what strat he uses? To acces his gear page you have to subscribe to the newsletter :(

At last, someone one talking mentoring. Too many tutorials overloading developing guitarists with note for note instruction
You have a very distinctive modern style which I very much admire
