The original sound effect was simulating a jaw harp, a traditional instrument in some country music. The names of the group are Tim Foust, the deep bass, Austin Brown, the high tenor (the lead singer in this song), Rob Lundquist, the other tenor (glasses and beard), Adam Rupp, the beatboxer, and Adam Chance, the baritone and here also doing the jaw harp effect.

    • @nzlemming
      @nzlemming 3 года назад +2

Also, it wasn't Adam Rupp, the beatboxer, doing it. It was Chance.

    • @rolandratz1

Hi Douglas - in my opinion, what Adam Rupp imitates is not a Jaw Harp, but a harmonica (see also the comment below by "Jan Hankins". Adam Rupp was also asked about this in another video and explained there how to create this hamonica touch.
Adam Chance - that's the last man seen, produces a sound like a DigderyDoo.
This song is over 100 years old but was made popular in the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou" with george Cloony in the leading role.

@@rolandratz1 What you hear as a digeridoo, an Australian instrument, most of the rest of us hear as a jaw harp, an instrument that would have been quite common and familiar in the rural southern US. I leave it to others to decide which is more likely to have been the intended target sound.

A capella literally means no instruments. All sounds you hear from Home Free are made without the use of instruments. Adam (the beat boxer) is outstanding (and is arguably the best). He makes all those noises (including the "harmonica" with his mouth/voice). They all do some noises but Adam is the major percussionist.

Great reaction, Thanks. This song was filmed at Oak Hollow Farm in Fairhope, Alabama and yes it was raining. Adam Chance from Alabama, was doing the Jaw Harp in the more noticeable beginning and end...they call him Chance so he isn't confused with Adam Rupp the beatboxer from Minnesota...Tim Foust is from Southeast Texas...you will notice Tim cut his hair during the pandemic...Austin Brown is from Georgia...Rob Lundquist is from Minnesota. Tim and Chance will trade out the bass when needed.
    Might want to react to...9 to 5 beatboxing breakdown...it is live...In The Blood...What We Ain't Got...Honey I'm Good...Feelin It...for fun. Thanks again.

They all have training in multiple instruments and I think all have degrees in music. Austin, the one with a hat, trained classically and trained in musical theater. He’s the high tenor with 5 octave range. Adam Rupp is beatboxer extraordinaire and sings tenor, Adam chance is bass and baritone and called Chance, and Tim Foust bass with 5+ octave range. The song told a story of unattached ramblers, catching trains and leaving the women in their lives and pretty much dying alone. Johnny Cash song. Also performed in movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Try How Great Thou Art for full on 5 part harmony (no beatboxing) set in the Austrian Alps and the best soaring version I’ve heard. For some funky arrangement try Do You Hear What I Hear. Although a Christmas song it’s worth hearing any time of year. All of these are older performances. No auto tune, no instruments just voice and Rupp uses parts of his body sometimes. I hope this is helpful

Yes, it was raining while they did the video. They were in southern Alabama.
Yes, Adam Rupp, the Beat Boxer is one of the founders of the group. His brother, Chris left 5 years ago to go solo.
Welcome to the Rabbit Hole of HOME FREE ❤️‼️❤️. It’s a a great fun ride ❤️‼️❤️

Excellent reaction fellas ! These guys are just so darn talented. Chris Rupp left the band in May of 2016 & he hand picked his replacement, which was Adam Chance who in the band is called just Chance, to avoid confusion with the beatboxer. Next time it would be great to see you chose one of their originals to react to. I would suggest " *DIVE BAR SAINTS* " it's a great song that was written just for them, by their friend Arliss Allbritton.

Great reaction! So much talent in these guys! Here are songs where you can see each member shine. Austin Brown their tenor 'When a man loves a Woman', Rob Lundquist the other tenor ' End of the Road', Adam Chance baritone/ bass ' Cover me up', Tim Foust their bass ' In the Blood' or low bass can be heard in Misty Mountains from the Hobbit by Peter Hollens featuring Tim Foust. And Adam Rupp beatboxer/ vocal percussionist has a drum solo video out on youtube. And also Home Free is known for their sense of humor to see examples if that check out Butts Medley, All about that bass, Champagne taste on a beer budget. Thank you for sharing your Home Free journey with us!

There are multiple Adam Rupp drum solos out on RUclips. As a note to our reactors here, please don't just go with the first one that shows up on a search. That is likely to be the one from 2015. It has a lot of hits because it's old. Find a more recent one where he shows off some Michael Jackson's Billie Jean moves & sound. He's constantly developing his skills, so the older videos aren't in any way representative of his current abilities.

Chris Rupp did co-found the group with his brother Adam as you said. He left in 2016 to pursue solo and other collabs and chose Adam Chance as his replacement.

Love Home Free. Everything is with their mouths. Chance did the mouth harp sound (sounds like a didgeridoo). He was the last guy filmed in the video. This was filmed in s. Alabama and that gator is real. Rob is the tenor with glasses. Austin was the lead here and he is the high tenor. Tim is the bass. Chance is the baritone/bass and Adam is the beatboxer. He can do drums, harmonica, bugs, all kinds of sounds. If you’d like to hear more of Adam watch the Adam Rupp Drum Solo on youtube. Amazing stuff. Tim has a 5 octave range so he can sing bass all the way up to tenor. This song is over 100 years old but was made popular in the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. They can sing all genres of music. Helplessly Hoping, Seven Bridges Road, Country Roads to hear more great harmonies. My son was in Belgium in 2011-2012 for studies. He stayed on Avenue Louise. We visited and saw Brussels and Grand Place. Beautiful city!

The reptile at the beginning and end is an alligator. The US does have one species of crocodile in the Florida Everglades but they are rare. Alligators on the other hand are common along the Gulf of Mexico. In Louisiana they jokingly call them “yard dogs”. [Alligator - rounded snout with no protruding teeth]. Chris Rupp and Adam Rupp co-founded the group. Adam is trained in Trumpet which is where he gets his incredible breathing techniques. Chris left to pursue a solo career and helped in picking out Adam "Chance" as his replacement. They came across Austin on a cruise ship they were both performing on. I don't remember how they came across Tim. But now that they have Chance, he can cover bass when Tim takes lead, and I think he brings a lot to the band. Chris also has some reaction/review videos where he talks about the older HF videos and has background info. Chris basically talked Adam into taking up beatboxing...and Adam is a perfectionist. I think this is the perfect blend of 5 voices. BTW, Adam sings Tenor when not beat boxing. Check out "Helplessly Hoping", "How great thou art" for 5 part harmonies.

    Home Free is:
Earlier Years Chris Rupp (usually wearing a Cowboy Hat & always smiling) and Adam Rupp, the Beatboxer founded the Group. Chris went Solo in 2016 with which he is doing Very Well!
Adam Chance who goes by Chance was brought in to replace Chris!
Chance is the Baritone that has a 4 Octave Range.
He can replace Tim, the Group's Bassist when needed as Chance was the Bassist in his previous Group before Home Free.
Back to Adam Rupp, he's the incredibly talented Beatboxer and can sing well too!
His Beatboxing is above and beyond any other Beatboxer that I have seen!
He's also won several Beatboxing Championships to boot!😁😁
Now to Tim, the Group's Bassist has a 5 Octave Range so he can Lead the Group as a Bassist or a Tenor or something in between!
He's Phenomenal and he's also taught some other Bassists from other Acapella Group's to be able to do certain things that allow them to get Lower and hit Notes they weren't able to before now.
The Bearded Singer is the Group's Tenor and he is Awesome!
Such a Creamy Tone and at times his Range is incredible too!
To end the Group's Members is Austin the Group's High Tenor.
    This man is unbelievable!
He can hit the highest of the highest of notes and he still can do Low Notes almost Baritone standards!
Now hopefully you can get caught up with the Group's Members!

I can help you with where the video was filmed. I got to ask a question at their concert in December when they were at Kansas City, MO. My hubby and I went! Adam Chance, the one who beat on the guitar in the Sea Chanty video, grew up in Alabama. I asked him if the video was filmed on his parents' property and he said, "No, it was down the road about 5 miles from his parents' house. Adam Chance said the alligator is real though. I told him I know all about the gators down south because my sister lives in Alabama. Adam Chance did do the digeridoo sound only using his mouth.🙂

The song is from the movie: O'Brother, were art Thou (With George clooney). The place they are - is inspired from the same movie. My favorite is: Adam Chance... (The baryton).

Hi Anja! Well, I actually have watched the scene where they sing that song in the movie, I was really interested :p but apparently, George Clooney didn't sing the song on the recordings, someone else did :p

    Since you asked…
    A Cheat Sheet: of shorts
Home Free is a country a cappella group but they don’t stay in their assigned genre. They do all cover songs across the board. Their fan base call themselves Home Fries.
Tim Foust (bass) can go as low as G1, not found on the standard keyboard. Some say his low notes are quite emasculating. Has, in fact, blown speakers (there’s videos out there of it). He actually has an impressive 5 octave range. It’s notable, that despite his fame, he’s very humble. He was inducted into the Museum of the Gulf Coast's music hall of fame January, 22, 2020, video of it online.
Adam Rupp, founding member and the beat boxer (yes that’s a harmonica sound he’s creating without the instrumentin Man of Constant Sorrow) has won at least two awards (that I’m aware of) in beat boxing. He is said to eat drum kits for breakfast and can be quite trying when on long bus tours. He is also the brother of Chris Rupp (not in this video but earlier ones - left to pursue his own career) is the other co-founder of Home Free.
Austin Brown, lead tenor, can hit some high notes (see When a Man Loves a Woman). He’s got that odd quirkiness to him and has a cat named Dawg (don’t know why that’s important to add). He also wrote an original Christmas song (so over due for one of them) called “Cold Hard Cash.” It showcases his comedic and writing talents.
Rob Lundquist (glasses and long beard), from my state of Minnesota, has two kids and is considered the lower tenor (Austin being the higher tenor). He does a great job with Sir Mix-a-lot, he’s also the grounding and all around force for the group (because there’s no idea just how out of control and quirkiness the group would be with Austin, Tim and Adam running wild). He also reminds me of Bobby Singer, a character from the t.v. show Supernatural, when he wears his red and black flannel with sunglasses.
(Adam) Chance, called Chance so not to be confused with the drum kit (Adam Rupp), is the one making the Jew harp in the background in Man of Constant Sorrow. He’s the newest member, replacing Chris Rupp. More recent videos have him featured as lead singer (see Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison” and “Sea Shanty Medley”). He’s is actually a bass but sings bass-baritone in the group. And has an obsession with sea shanty melodies, one that I believe he is at fault for stoking the explosion on Tik Tik in order to get Home Free to make their own “Sea Shanty Medley.” But I can’t yet prove that yet. But I’m on to him.
The best things that make this a cappella group stand out is that they seem to have so much fun in making videos, they’re versatile, and no one member is always center stage (they share the spot light - though Austin can seem over hyper comedic drama queen with flamboyant exaggeration {which we all love him for it}).

Check out examples of "Throat singing" on YT.
That's how Adam Chance is doing that mouth harp with his voice.
This song is an American standard from the early 1900's and many others have covered it.
I saw a video on YT about how to do beatbox harmonica. They have you put your hand up against your nose to pinch your nostrils and get a high pitched nasally sound. This is what Adam Rupp is doing for his harmonica-less harmonica solo.

I think of Home Free as blue grass or folk. This song for example, is originally sung about 20 years before Country music was developed. But they do sing some country too. The one in the middle is Austin Brown & I think he did wear red in 'Sea Shanty' but my memory may not be that accurate. I'm sure everyone by now said who did what. The instrument first heard is an ancient instrument that got a revival in American Bluegrass. So much so many think it is a pretty new introduction. It is actually from China about 2300 years ago. Some even think it sounds like a Didgeridoo. But when you listen to the Aboriginal Didgeridoo & the Mouth Harp in this song the differences are clear cut. 9:23 I'm sure the Home Fries will let you know all about them. LOL!! Scenery to me is Deep South. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama. Spanish moss in the trees probably wouldn't be Florida. It could be but probably not. Maybe SE Texas, probably not. A Capella do sometime sing out of the group with someone else. Seems to be a lot better relationships with other groups. Avi Kaplan did sing 'Ring of Fire' with Home Free.
