THE STORY OF MAU MAU VETERAN HANNAH WANGUI NDERITU AKA WA GATHIGI

Mau Mau veteran Hannah Wangui Nderitu, aka wa Gathigi, narrates how the disrespect of the Africans by the white settlers led to the decision to fight for Kenya's freedom. She explains how she entered the forest to join other freedom fighters. She says that Dedan Kimathi painted the picture of freedom for the people, making it easier for young people to understand the benefits of freedom. She joined the forces in 1952, fighting with the Stanley Mathenge, Dedan Kimathi Karari, Njama and Ndungu wa Gicheru and other luminaries. She was in the forest for close to six years. She insist that both men and women were all fighters and there were no gender considerations in the midst of war. She was shot and wounded (she was shot 25 times and still has bullets in her body) but is still reluctant to talk, saying that she has been interrogated several times by the government. She reminds us of other Mau Mau veterans who have refused to reveal details. Still, there are some things she says she bound by the oath not to reveal. You have done well.That was a difficult interview.The pain and trauma of cucu is real and you can tell she is disappointed with the type of independence we got and that she doesnt trust the go'vt at all even though she says she is 'happy'
