One of the biggest mysteries within Undertale is the peculiar blue castle we see in the background of Waterfall. Just where exactly is it? Can it be accessed in-game? Is what it is ever even explained? This video does its best to dredge up any evidence explaining the mystery building's purpose and origin, and whether we can actually go there!

Underlab i always thought that the castle is just Asgor’s castle far in the distance and that Asgor’s new home is inside the castle. The walls of the castle are grey just like new home and the blue roofs wouldn’t be seen from the inside.

Actually, if you go by the definition of a castle being a fortified structure that also doubles as a residence for it's owners (eg a Lord or King), then that "castle" in Waterfall is really not a castle at all. It would be a Palace, and the buildings surrounding it would be part of a city or large town. The Castle is clearly not really fortified and not meant to hold against an invading army. There really aren't any fortifications for the occupants to properly defend it.

I actually took a closer look at that castle during the video and saw that there are, indeed, other buildings surrounding it; they're just camouflaged by the castle. Also, the building itself is not blue; just the roofs.
Brodo Well... makes sense for Hotland to be lowest. If it's that hot, and it's got lava and everything that would imply it's closest to the core of the Earth.
Wow that should NOT have taken me this long to figure out, hotland near earths core, then you go to tge CORE. Wait that means w.d. gaster literally fell into the earths core, that might burn a bit, ouch.

I'm pretty sure the "city" area devoid of color _is_ the castle you go to in-game, and Asgore's home is located inside of it.

i still think its Asgore's castle. but you make some interesting points like the fact that sunlight is supposed to shine down into the last corridor and the throne room so why cant we see that in the distant castle. but i think its just that we dont actually see Asgore's castle while in New Home because we are IN his castle and its the only thing that has the blue rooftops in the capitol
there is something that i have been thinking about lately, its not a theory since i dont have any real explanations for it. its just something to think about:
where does waterfall come from? well its from the roof of the cavern right? but think about this, is it falling from the roof of the cavern where waterfall is nearer to the base of the mountain or the top of the mountain? and where does all that garbage come from? in the intro the mountain looks like its in the middle of a large forest so why on earth would there be garbage falling into a mountain from probably very near the top? if the water were coming from deep in the ground it wouldn't have garbage, and if it were flowing from the surface it wouldn't make sense since water cant flow uphill AND it wouldn't make sense for humans to throw trash into a mountain that no one even dares to go near anyways. the existence of the whole area of waterfall is weird if you think about it
just tell me how water from the surface full of garbage flows UP a mountain and then falls into it.

Think about how science and magic work together,along with the barrier

Papyrus says that it's Asgore's castle when you call him when looking at it, though. I don't think it's Toby Fox's mistake, though he tested Undertale a lot of times and he wouldn't miss or fail in something like that.

The castle might be where king Mel lives or a past monster king or queen as the place where asgore lives is just a black and white version of toriel's home with the addition of the judgement hall the room with the souls the throne room and the room where the barrier is instead of the rooms leading up to fighting tori and snowed in town!
Maybe it is part of the lost city of Atlantis? Well... perhaps not... but still... could be, no? After all, Atlantis sunk, didn't it? Therefore it would make sense why the castle remains underground, because it is one of the remains of Atlantis :P

I personally think the castle at Waterfall is the same castle at the very end of the game where you fight Asgore and encounter Sans. If anything, the blue coloring is likely just a stylistic choice to fit in which the rest of the Waterfall area and it's blue color scheme.

i already commented but i noticed some things while playing the game that has made me question my previous thoughts so im commenting again. when you fight Undyne you see in the background two tall buildings against a red background which indicates they must be in Hotland, also most likely a part of the core since we dont see the top of the core when we pass by it.
you need to use an elevator to get to Asgores Castle, the elevator is in the Core. also you would need an elevator to get to the city as well even though we never get to go there. both elevators are in Hotland and near or in the Core and seem to be going UP which would be above the Core.
the Castle in the distance in Waterfall doesn't look like its anywhere near Hotland at all. unless Hotland is below Waterfall and the Core is just below the Castle when we view it from Waterfall. or maybe this is just a mistake Toby made.
i had a theory that the experiment that Gaster did that went wrong caused a flood in the underground and that the castle we see from Waterfall is the old castle and below and around it was the original city but its now underwater and they rebuilt the city on top of the Core. but that theory is debunked by the phone calls you can get from Papyrus and Undyne which make it clear that what you see in the distance is indeed Asgore's current place of residence and the place where you may leave the Underground. so im just left a little confused, a little lost in the details that dont quite add up.
then there's the mysterious statue that plays His Theme when you give it an umbrella, and the light that shines on it, and the odd detail that the stones at its feet are...dry? maybe Toby just likes messing with us by adding all these little mysterious details, or maybe there is some meaning to at least some of these details?

Let me try to big brain this perhaps, this may be jumbled bc im thinking of so many points at once, but ill try to convey properly:
There seem to be buildings around the "back" of the castlr we see, like theyre the same color as the "rock" it all sits on, and some caves deep down in earth get insanely huge, and if hotland were behind it, it would be very dim. (maybe the castle is directly in front of hotland, or maybe the water chasm bends in a wierd way as to where it would have a HUGE waterfall behind the castle (where it goes pitch black) and that fall would overlook hotland possibly, which might explain the elevator going TO new home, it would just travel up from hotland, through an unseen part of this massive waterlogged cave, and to the side of the castle we dont see, which could be the part of new home we explore! Though im unskilled at seeing where places could lead, feel free to call me an idiot because i honestly feel like one myself- but this is where i get lost, because of the judgement hall, it wouldnt fit in with what ive said, unless the back of the castle had some kindof sunlike light source being blocked from waterfall by the castle itself???)

Underlab, if you ever played Undertale you would know. It is Asgore's Castle. If you talk to Monster Kid, he says it is the Dreemur Castle. Please do research before assuming things like this.
P.S. The castle looks blue because of waterfalls light. I hope you take this comment into consideration, as I think you need to put more than five minutes into a theory. Do NOT become the next Game Theory, Underlab. This is not exactly a hate comment, but a comment to warn you about what this could turn into. If it wasn't Asgore's castle, there probably a secret in it, (such as one of the only possible places for the monsters to hide during the geno route); or just a prop for the monsters to look at. Since it is probably Asgore's castle, the monstered probably evacuated to the outside ancient city of the castle (where you cannot truly visit,) while Asgore and Sans wait to fight you in the catsle.

Not saying Toby may never make secrets again, but the Data Miners in the beginning of the release of the Game, Ruined much of any chances of more "Secrets". It's cool to find something in the Game's Files like this, and i would have been so tempted myself! But I'm sure Toby will make more things to come sometime in the Future! :)
Forgive me if im wrong (as in the videos title before now was something like "WHO'S castle is this?" But the videos about what could be inside or what is inside if it was in the games boundaries (as in another room just imagined from far away)) and all i see are comments saying "its asgores castle" "yo thats asgores castle dawg" "Hey its asgores castle" "its asgores castle papyrus says" "undyne comfirms-" "papyrus said-" "monster kid tells us-" Like ok WE KNOW by this point... its asgores castle, but whats inside of it?! Not trying to be rude to anyone or target/call out any one person, its just confusing.
Theory: Flowey is an amalgamate. Remember; Asriel is dead before he becomes a flower. Additionally, Alphys decided to inject determination into a flower, probably one with Asriel's dust on it, then later freaks out when papyrus explained how he knew to call everyone. Additionally, Asriel could not stay a Dreemurr forever. Soon, he would turn back into a flower, as if the Flowey part of him remained from the experiment conducted. You should salvage through the game to understand my theory better.
It was discovered by a RUclipsr during June 2016 by the name of keems who while calling papyrus in every room found that in the room where you see the castle papyrus says that’s asgores castle.
Underlab, i need your help on something. I've completed the full Genocide Run (Yes i killed Sans & Sold my Soul to get the world back), so i spared everyone and didn't earn any EXP (Execution Points) or LOVE (Level Of Violence). But after leaving the CORE after Mettaton ran out of batteries, i didn't get the call from Papyrus and Undyne, i don't know why, i couldn't enter Alphys' lab. Plus, i have to now fight Asgore instead of Asriel Dreemurr. I don't get it, i tried to get to the True Pacifist (Where everyone gets out to the surface and leaves the underground), but instead i have to kill Asgore. What's going on?

One idea is that it's a castle the Dreemurrs were building for Asriel for when he would have been all grown up and rule the monsters. But since Asriel died, it was left abandoned.
