@@maddalenamottura they are both kind of meh though...i am more of a dangelo mononeon dude. Lenny cannot shred and bruno is too pop. But they are ok. especially in the bank account dept.
Prince really gave Dez the lead guitar spotlight in a way i don't believe he gave it to any of his other guitarists. And since he had really entered the time period where he micromanaged every detail of his career, especially his live show, he must have not only really liked Dez' playing, but he must have really believed he would never let him down.
Prince knew that, like himself, Dez was a rocker so he knew Dez could handle the parts. After Dez left there was never another rocker at guitar in Princes' band.
Prince actually gave Wendy some room. She soloed on When Doves Cry, Little Red Corvette, Darling Nikki and the Beautiful Ones off the top of my head. I saw the Purple Rain and Parade Tours. She just wasn't as good of a lead rock player until years after she, Lisa and Bobby were let go. I've seen her play the Purple Rain solo note for note. But she couldn't have done that back then. She wasn't bad. Just wasn't as good as Dez at the time
Wow, second time I've now heard Lady Cab Driver live in different 1999 shows. Never even knew he ever performed it. Don't get no better than this. Thanks for posting it.
The Time, Vanity 6 Prince tour was one of the best ever. The only thing was that after The Time performed their set I was almost too tired from partying to enjoy Prince. That only lasted about One song then the party resumed.
+spinalcrackerbox No way, Dez is, has, and will always be the man! He took a back seat when he found religion. Had that not been the case, I'm guessing he would have went on to be a noted guitarist in his own right of all time.
+spinalcrackerbox Hey, you're right, and I should have been more clear. Universally he is underrated, it's just to me, I know his capabilities and he is a great. In fact, maybe less than 3 percent of America's population know who he is, unlike many other legendary guitarists.
+discoAL Not at all! It's an incredible song, the BEST version ever was recorded on November 30 , 1982 in Detroit. It has an incredible bass solo by Brown Mark and extended lyrics by Prince!!!! No other version can compare. It was released on the bootleg "City Lights Vol. 3" The 1999 Tour Soundboard collection, if you ever come across it don't hesitate to purchase it! You won't be disappointed!
+Unkle Al dumbass comment. dude is/was a crazy good guitarist. sounded fine to me and everything they did was done to prince's standard.. he left on his own.
Unkle Al do you really want to get into why a guitar might not sound great? beyond the player, there's sound engineering, bad recording, equipment issues. the point is, dez is a badass and you're a nobody commenting for a negative reason. enjoy the show or find something better to do with your time.
Prince in his hey day could not be touched!
Back in the day old school prince
Prince and Michael Jackson will never be duplicated.
yeah and they both got hit by james brown ...but Prince was on a wholeothalevel

Especially when Prince played most if not all of the instruments while making at least a few of his albums. He knew what he wanted to hear

Pity we didn't get any solo musical offerings from Dez.
The man was truly talented.
He gave Wendy prop and miko prop to
The fact I will never get to see him perform live really gets to my stomach. #RestinPeacePRINCE
+van chi I feel you! I'm in the same situation as you! :((
The fucked-up thing is I know exactly the feeling you mean and I _did_ see him. It isn't enough.
+van chi Same here. But who knows? Maybe we will someday..
I’m the same n eye look like him a lot
That groove to _Lady Cab Driver_! It gets me every time. I'm tellin' you somethin'. Great performance.

classic prince !!! R.I.P
Saw him in Lakeland Fl during the 1999 tour, got there late and missed Vanity 6 and The Time but just in time for him!
Oh how time has passed...I remember this
Don't you want to play with my "Toostie Roll" ! Never heard it called that before.😂
+lilshorty3812 LOL!!!!!
I literally laughed out loud when he sang that.

I swear he levitates at around 3:40
It's funny when you realize that he's performing this in an arena that is now a church...
Ty so much !!
God must have loved him extra 💜
Had this on VHS 30 years ago! Please post the whole show!

+PurpleRain500 Thanks for this info, Lady Cab Driver is top 3 for me. I'm gonna look for the Detroit 82 version right now.
They say it was the first foray into hip hop and his verses and delivery are other worldly. In my teens that was my JAM! Nothing wrong at all.
It's easy to see why The Time kicked his ass.
Dez's guitar sounds awful. Did he leave the group on his own or was he fired?
