    Are you excited for Secret level? Do you think Critical Role is signaling a further split from Wizards of the Coast and D&D? Let us know!

      I only hope, pray and wonder if Critical Role will continue to do fantasy themed RPGs.
      Speaking only for myself, I feel that THAT is where the group shines most

    While I think the CR cast were developing their own gaming system way before WOTC tried their whole license switcheroo, I think that little stunt majorly hurt WOTC's credibility with Actual Play streamers. If anyone can give tabletop players an alternative to D&D, it would be Critical Role.

      I think the WotC-CR relationship hasn't been great long before that, CR made their first book with Green Ronin and WotC didn't agree to the inclusion of certain things like the name of the Gods, even though they tried to work out a deal at the time, and WotC's stuff wasn't included in the animated show either. It took the corporate side of WotC a long time to recognize the importance of CR to DnD's ressurgence and make a deal with them for the Exandria books.

    • @SeanBoyce-gp
      @SeanBoyce-gp 22 дня назад +3

      I think that's a wildly naive position. CR advertises for them, accepts sponsorships for them, signs licensing deals with them.
      There is no break down of trust. There is only the simple market truth: I can make more money if I own it. CR's game came about because they want to be independent for monetary reasons, not ethical ones. I would struggle to believe any notion that suggests otherwise.
      I for one am fascinated to see how that works. To now, their non-dnd streams have massively struggled to hit viewership or subscriber interest numbers that they posted in their first two campaigns, and c3 has been lagging in viewership. I personally don't give a single damn, gave up watching c3 because of too many better (Dimension2) options for my time. But that's admittedly an infinitesimally small sample size.

    • @PianoMyHeart
      @PianoMyHeart 22 дня назад +3

      @@SeanBoyce-gp I meant that WOTC lost some trust with the community in general, but probably CR as well. Of course that would be a financial move if CR had to suddenly pay licensing fees for using the D&D system. But if I were CR, I'd be very interested in becoming more independent with their systems after that stunt WOTC tried to pull.
      I wouldn't be surprised if someday CR moved away from WOTC content entirely, but I think it would be a slow and gradual change.

    Sounds like the Critical Role's Puppy Roll might have them playing Pugmire, which an actual TTRPG where you have dog breeds as the primary player options with something akin to a class system found in other games.

  • @TheOctoQueen

    I wish people would stop assuming things. CR has played a bunch of other TTRPGs Candela, Dagger Heart, D&D, just to name a few. Not everything has to mean something else. Take it for what was said.

  • @oshermdaddy2058
    @oshermdaddy2058 22 дня назад +6

    I do not think they will ever permanently cut from the DND system, generally it is too big to let go imo. That being said I think he was referencing the fact that they will probably come out with even more systems with mini series that come with them. Also they have already done so with dagger heart and candela

    • @ghurcbghurcb
      @ghurcbghurcb 21 день назад +2

      Nah, sticking to D&D limits Critical Role's potential. Look at The Legend of Vox Machina, they had to wipe the story clean from any WOTC IP. It's Half-giant, not Goliath. Its Onlooker, not Beholder. It's Scanlan's Hand, not Bigby's Hand.
      If CR is to expand they'd have to stop using IPs that don't belong to them. That's why they renamed the gods in campaign 2, and some of the playable ancestries in campaign 3. And that's why they are developing Daggerheart.
      Seriously, why else would they be making a game that is so similar to D&D in its assumed setting? For fun?

    • @oshermdaddy2058
      @oshermdaddy2058 21 день назад +1

      @@ghurcbghurcb I just mean that they will never cut off 100% from DND. It is a part of the reason why they became popular in the first place and I think it would be a bad idea to completely cut off ties to WOTC (unless something major happens ofc).

    sorry in advance..."Hit the like and subscribe button, so we can keep making them!" ... my brain goes "You are making like and subscribe buttons!?" ... and then goes on "It's true, with every video comes a new set of them buttons, so you're kinda making those as well!" ... sorry after the fact 🙈
    I did hit this new like button, btw.

    Well, if you know CR enough, you'll know that CR isn't just about D&D. And no, that not because of Daggerheart, that's the case for years now.
    If you saw the Critical Role San Diego Comic Con panel this year you'll know that Marisha verbatim confirmed they will keep playing D&D and other TTRPs that are not from Darrington Press even if they will (obviously) doing stuff with Daggerheart.

    • @evetobe
      @evetobe 21 день назад

      I mean, that could also mean they'll only still be playing D&D in some sponsored one shots while the campaign will be in DH...

    • @mardek_
      @mardek_ 21 день назад +1

      @@evetobe That could mean a lot of things, yes. I'm just tired to hear "CR is moving away from D&D" but in fact, it's just nothing at all.

  • @Ulfdrengr

    I think Matt meant to say plethora, not modicum. "A whole modicum" doesn't really sound right. But regardless, I don't think he was necessarily indicating any changes to the channel. He probably just said it that way because they already play other games besides D&D on their channel.

    It’s been a while since you went anti d&d. It’s just been 2 positive lately. Best news was more love and robots type content . If I was Matt I’d take it real slow on leaving d&d as a lot of the other stuff has been just so so

  • @zacharynyberg7007

    I mean from a business standpoint sure, this makes sense on Cr to move away from dnd. At the same time I’ll just stop watching anything going forward. Since all I care about is their dnd. Their board games or card games are meh at best, and I play a plethora of board games/card games with friends or family. I do not care for candela, cthulu stuff is a niche atmosphere and I think it’s still better, podcasting? Never cared much for it in general. And then there’s dagger heart….. I want to like it, but it just feels like I can’t customize something of my own creation… feel somewhat limited honestly. And I wouldn’t want to watch a massive 130 campaign of dagger heart stuff lol. But on how C3 is going I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the last campaign, I mean all 3 legendary groups are each striking vital locations all at once? What better way to end your run then have every possible major character in some way shape or form have a last minute avenger run lol. Also the prequel stuff kind of burns me out since they think showing us everything like Star Wars is doing is great which it isn’t just ruins my intrigue since, and I learned this cause of Star Wars: answering every question doesn’t make for good quality product

    with the new edition of D&D coming out they would have to make a system switch anyways so now seems like the time to do it. not all their audiences plays D&D and only knows the rules thru CR so they would have to explain the changes anyways so why not switch to the system they control.

      I doubt it. The Cosmere is very cool but for people that just want a generic fantasy setting with elves, dwarves and dragons, it's never going to be the right fit. I wager it'll end up filling its own niche, and exist alongside other RPGs with more classical settings.
