I struggle with that too. Try approaching each chord tone in the dim. chord from a half step below (this basically creates a diminished scale). Has to be phrased carefully, but it can work.
Just in case anyone else see this ill post my ideas. That chord is tricky but you can think of it a couple different ways. One method is like the channel said use the diminished whole half scale. This is a perfectly valid option. Some people want to maintain the diatonic sound over the chord and the whole half scale is a synthetic one that has a certain sound some people don't want to rely on. For this song what I'm doing is thinking this: If you can build a diminished chord off of the third of a dominant chord, then you can sorta build a dominant chord off of the sixth of a diminished chord. So for D#dim you can play B7 (mixolydian) with a b2. You can think of this as B phrygian dominant if you want but that give a more exotic sound. substituting a super dominant II chord( B7 is the II of the songs key of a) has more of a loose hippy feel to me. Don't forget the flat2 though! You can also get away with just playing a minor pentatonic there. Just avoid the 5th! You can do C# harmonic minor. There are a bunch of diminished chords in the harmonic minor scale and one is on the 2nd interval. You can also just play complete nonsense and have it lead to an A major chord tone. Diminished chords are pretty far out already so substituting a #11, b9, #5 or whatever doesn't really do anything but add more dissonance. For any way you take this you should focus on leading to a chord tone on the next chord. That's what the whole function of diminished chords is. High dissonance and release. If you just play your melody high dissonance and don't move with the chords it wont make sense.

I actually just do these in Garage Band using their pre-recorded drum tracks, and I play the instruments.
