This is a Top 5 in my Action Sci-Fi Thriller category! Other than Alien & Predator, do you have any that top The Thing??? Thanks to all the new subscribers & for stopping by the channel!
I think it may top those two movies, it is my personal favorite horror movie of all time. You get characters that act in human and intelligent ways, with the setting itself making it even harder on the people in the station. The "Whodunnit" aspect of the film is great, and the scene where Mac is holding all of them at flame thrower point and testing them? One of the greatest scenes of all times.
The thing is that some movies have moments that are amazing and top ten worthy but the movie The Thing is amazing from beginning to end.... Maybe the Exorcist comes close

This movie is absolutely one of the best movies of all cinema history. The deal about Childs not being the thing because of his earring is a false statement because at the time of this movie in 82' the idea about metal or implants not being absorbed wasn't even a thought. It wasn't until the prequel that the idea came about.
I'm not sure we can say it's false... It's possible the movie consulted Carpenter OR took it's own liberties. But frankly I really like the idea from the 2011 version. 1982 is definitely superior, but the 2011 prequel was a nice complement to the franchise.

This is why I never take film critics seriously and I don’t go see a movie on their recommendation. I love this movie when it came out and I still watch it today.
At the 9:32 mark, yes, Childs still has his earring in his ear. I have a theory that nobody else has ever thought. The Thing is very sensitive to pain. This is demonstrated by the medical electric shock procedure on Norris by Doc. Also by the hot wire test in the blood. Also the drilling into the ice block in the prequel film. The Thing can't help but react. At the end MacReady and Childs both sip whiskey. Since whiskey burns when you drink it and it kills body cells if MacReady or Childs were The Thing then they would have reacted in pain thinking they were under attack. Viola, a simple but elegant answer.
It's crazy I have only seen one other of your videos and I was like I would love to see you do a video on the thing. Got lucky great channel I'm subbing
Please do the movie "Night of the Creeps", this movie when I was a child was scary, a little funny and has one of my favorite lines "good news is, you dates are here... Bad news is, they're dead."
Yo Yo. Night of the Creeps is definitely a cult classic. I actually missed this one growing up and only was finally able to watch it in more recent years... I thought it was a pretty solid flick. Not sure if there's a ton of trivia out there for this one, but I'll definitely take a look. Thanks for the suggestion!
This and Halloween are my J.C. Go to’s. Not the top, but I also love Big Trouble in Little China and his Vampires movie. He truly is an underrated director. Entertaining movies all around.
I was an 8 yo kid when this came out and my dad really wanted to take my 5 yo brother and I… I’m glad my mother talked him out of it because when I experienced it older, I wasn’t overly scared and was very impressed by the special effects. It remains one of my favorite films and thanks for the trivia!
You're totally welcome! And yes, I think your mom made the right call. It's very possible you may have been traumatized for a little while seeing it that young. ; )
Holy heck! That must have left one heck of an impression with you! I too remember seeing when I was younger, but for the life of me I can't remember at what age...
@@ZMAMShow My mother likes horror films and taught me at a young age that all those films are just fantasy. Of course when your first ever horror film is The Exorcist, every film after that is just child’s play. That was the only movie till this day still gives me the creeps. In her defense she had no idea it was that scary. 🤪
@@jazcc lol. That’s awesome. I know some kids can handle these films when they understand it’s fake; but I know my 8 year old would have nightmares for a year if he saw this one. For crying out loud, the kid think E.T is scary!! Where did I go wrong? 😩😁
@@ZMAMShow Same here with my son. He’s six and he still can’t watch a whole movie and he doesn’t like violence on tv. He freaks out. Once he sits still in one place I’ll slowly incorporate some children scary stuff. He does like to read scary stories so I have hope.
@@jazcc The goosebumps movies are entertaining and might be a good Segway. Are you afraid of the dark series reboot over the last few years was actually pretty good too. There were a few scenes when this shadow monster popped out, I was like “That’s a legit jump scare for a younger crowd.”
People think that Childs is a Thing because they say you don't see his breath at the end, but when they chase the duplicate of Bennings out into the snow you CLEARLY see his breath when he lets out his moan.
THE THING and THE MIST an Fire In The Sky is on My favorite Top 10 favorite Syfy movie's 🎥 of All TIME. The Greatest Syfy film 🎥 Will Always be THE THING 👹from Another World.
Ha! That's awesome. Too bad the wife couldn't join in on the fun, but it's understandable. I remember when my now wife watched it with me. Now by that time I had seen this movie like 30+ times and it had been a long day... So when watching later that night I actually fell asleep. But too my surprise she actually stayed up and finished it! I was like, wow, didn't see that one coming! I also felt ashamed that I feel asleep...
The first time I ever saw the film it was on Cable which was a big thing back in the day and I believe I was in my younger single digit years.. the scene in the dog pen just ruined my night, I remember watching and then going into the hallway and began vomiting.. my mom came to console me but all I wanted to do was go see my Grandma, because as a child it's like your Grandma could make anything better like only a Grandma can! Now years later, is one of my favorite classic movies!
Lol! As a parent of 2 boys (8 and 10), my thoughts are your parents shouldn’t have let you watch that at such a young age! 😉 but what’s really interesting is that years later you revisited and love the movie. I truly believe Some movies have a little too much shock factor for young minds.
@@ZMAMShow The blame I would put a bit more on myself.. earlier in the night I was watching a Disney video in my parents room while they were watching TV in the living room preparing for dinner but when it ended I switched to cable and saw this dog and thought great, must be like "old yeller" or "benji".. at a young age didn't really understand the concept of what was happening, just that they seem to have rescued a dog that some men where trying to shoot..
Hmmmm. Very interesting. I'll re-watch the scene soon. At first thought I'd say it was the lighting in the scene, because I remember the camera angle being very dark around Childs. But you may have something here.
MacReady's character is one of the main reasons this movie is so awesome! Kurt Russell is a great actor, I've always enjoyed his performances. His one liners in this film are terrific. "Yea well F---, you too!" : )
Fantastic film!! Big fan and I am proud to own the Blu ray copy and action figure from NECCA. Lol I even have the game on PlayStation 2 which was very challenging. Did anyone like the 2011 prequel?
An die hard fan indeed you are sir! I did play the game, was creepy and well done. I thought the prequel was pretty solid and paid homage in the right places. CGI was a bit overdone, but that's Hollywood these days so it's either get on board or don't watch. I really liked their concept of the thing not being able to assimilate metal like earrings, metal plates inside the body, etc. Very clever and actually makes sense.
@@ZMAMShow I totally agree with you with the prequel and if we are lucky Mr. Carpenter has expressed his interest in making a follow up sequel to the 1982 film and I want to keep my fingers crossed and not hold my breath lol hopefully he makes it happen.:)
I didn't mention it in my comment, but the only one(s) that top this for me is the original Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). Original Alien is more of a sci-fi horror, so that would be my #1 in this category. thanks for sharing!
I think it is the best movie ever made. An absolute masterpiece from start to finish. It raises so many questions and yet never feels the need to hit the audience over the head with answers to them. It treats the audience with actual intelligence and leaves so much to the imagination. They don't make movies like this anymore in my opinion.
@@ecklectic9977 All true statements. And they don’t make movies like this anymore, because really they’d be just copied material. I do sympathize with todays writers. So many great things have been done in books and on screen. So many great ideas have been used. Hard to get an original idea.
Right?! I mean seriously. In my opinion 80's horror & sci-fi outmatches any of the current day movies. Mostly b/c they're just regurgitated from the 80's predecessors. I'm all for new movies an content, but the overuse of CGI has really exhausting.
@@ZMAMShow 100%. I’m crazy about that era. Nothing feels like those movies anymore. Few modern movies hit the mark. I wish they’d just go back to using the old tech and methods and just give us wholesome movies. Kurt Russel wouldn’t have agreed to do this movie had it been offered to him today because there would be so much certainty that it will blow hard. However there IS a new The Thing reboot coming out and they vowed to use only practical effects, based on JW Campbell’s novel and the extra 45 pages they recently uncovered after the classic ending.
@@aReallySwellGuy What?!?! Seriously there’s a new one in the works? I had no idea. Well I’m definitely intrigued! Here’s to hoping they don’t muck it up!
@@ZMAMShow YES here’s hoping. The team is very dedicated to making all practical effects and they know that’s what people want, is what I read. If they pull it off it could be one of the best modern horror movies! Nothing will beat the original but it could stand as its own perfectly great film if they actually follow the novel more closely than Carpenters material. The creature was described as purple with eyes all over, and there was a bigger use of electricity rather than fire. Could go any way!
Not sure, but I don't think any dogs were harmed. True lurking around and scaring them to make howling noises isn't exactly awesome... But it did make for one heck of a movie.
Fully agree with you! Personally only take critics opinions as a grain of salt. They have agendas, they're paid off, & like you said usually off the mark for good entertaining movies. I look to the masses of normal joe's and joette's to make the final calls. And even in the end, I'll usually still watch so I can form my own opinion.
You ain’t lying! There’s many of us who feel the same. The masses don’t lie. 8.2 on IMDb w/ 425k reviews for a sci-fi horror movie from the early 80’s… now that’s saying something!

Critics and/or audiences very often don't "get it", especially when something truly new and challenging shows up on the silver screen. (I believe that IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, THE WIZARD OF OZ, CITIZEN KANE and a few other monumental now-revered classics suffered poor initial receptions. And, of course, so did BLADERUNNER, and even the Monkees's unexpectedly strange and recursive- plotless film HEAD are also examples of projects that gained in significance and accolades as the decades stacked up). You probably have been informed that Rob's name is pronounced closer to BOE-TEEN than Bah-tin. I'm not sure why we presume that one of the survivors at the end MUST be a Thing. It is purposefully left ambiguous. The pre-quel I find to be unreliable in a number of ways as to its accuracy in "mating" with the Carpenter film. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for your thoughts on it. I believe you are right. And no I didn't know about Rob's last name. I'm becoming notorious for mis-pronouncing some of the cast/crew last names. Guess I need to do my homework so I don't sound like a doe doe. True it's an ambiguous ending, but many can't help themselves and wonder... What if? Who has it? That's definitely what's cool about movies like this. Peeps can decide for themselves. I thought the prequel was entertaining, but can't say much more than that. It was interesting. I did like that the Thing couldn't replicate metal objects inside the body, I thought that was clever. Thanks for the chat & watching the vid!
@@ZMAMShow AND ...thanks for the comments back! I recall everyone I knew in terms of your "average moviegoer" at the time hated the open-ended final scenes. I heard endless "don't bother""s from non genre people, and I think that that very ambiguity (aong with the down tone and graphic horror) turned it into boboxoffice poison. I shocked a lot of people when I told them how much I liked it, but managed to talk a few people into going to see it a second time. A very different reaction from them the second time, like "boy, you were right It's really amazing"--type comments.
Welcome & congrats on being the 1st! Dude this movie still creeps me out to this day. Always love tossing it on in the background when I'm editing. The idea that critics hated it is not surprising, but that the public didn't just blows my mind!
See I didn’t mind the effects at all. They’re practical and being as we don’t know anything about the thing, that gave the artists full autonomy to do as they liked. Im an 80’s kid tho, so it may not translate to some younger audiences. Either way tho, still a great movie. Thanks for watching my vid. 👍

This is why I never take film critics seriously and I don’t go see a movie on their recommendation. I love this movie when it came out and I still watch it today.
The thing is one of my favorite films ever. I have always had a copy
I toss it on sometimes if I just need some background noise or need inspiration when writing my zombie series.
This movie has from the very first time I saw it, been my favorite horror film.
Me too! Thanks for watching!
One of my favorite horror/sci-Fi classics.
Mine too! Thanks for watching!
This is my favorite Movie out of all.
Also, I too suspected it was Norris.
Nice! thanks for confirming my Norris theory! It's totally his outline, whether Carpenter wants to admit it or not. : )
Ha! Nice Guy! Awesome when things work out. Thanks for the sub!
My favourite film of all time .
Amazing to see all the love for this movie! I can't wait for my kids to get old enough to experience it. Just not yet ; )
One of the best movies I have seen
Heck yea! I’ve seen this one sooo many times I’ve literally lost count.
One of my favorite movies as well. Did you cover the Prequel that was done after this one?
Great fact & great movie 👍👏
Thanks for watching Manny!
This movie scared me so much I couldn't sleep for a months, the good ole days 😂😂😂😂
Lol! 😂 right! That’s a great feeling to have. Movie was sooo well done.
Favorite movie from the 80s
I love 80's like EVERYTHING! Movies especially!
The Thing was one of my favorite movies that John Carpenter did. I like other movies he did but this is one I return to over and over again
This and Halloween are my J.C. Go to’s. Not the top, but I also love Big Trouble in Little China and his Vampires movie. He truly is an underrated director. Entertaining movies all
around.
@@ZMAMShow I also like Halloween, Big Trouble in Little China , and vampires. I think he is a great director.
@@Ray30 Nice!
What a film !
Amen to that!
A master piece of film.
Truly! I'm like, did these critics watch the same movie as me???
I love the drawing of the dogs?
I found this art online and thought it was amazing. I need to find the illustrator so I can commend him on his work.
Love this channel
Thanks so much TheSal702! Love that you guys are loving it!
It's very possible you may have been traumatized for a little while seeing it that young. ; )
Alcoholic helicopter parent moment🤦🏻♂️🤷🏽♂️
love the thing films and the game wish they would do more
I could stand to see some more. Although with all the b.s. going on in Hollywood now, I fear they’d just ruin another one of my beloved franchises.
@@ZMAMShow sad but true
My all time favorite movie ❤️❤️
Nice! Glad to see the majority of you all are die hard fans like me!
I remember seeing this went it came out I was 12 years old.
Holy heck! That must have left one heck of an impression with you! I too remember seeing when I was younger, but for the life of me I can't remember at what age...
I will always treasure this movie since I was 4 years old. Top 5 for me
How you saw this under the age of 8 and was not traumatized by it is beyond me!! You must have had a high scare tolerance as a child!
New to the channel love the vid! Subscribed!
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel HomeOnTheRange!
People think that Childs is a Thing because they say you don't see his breath at the end, but when they chase the duplicate of Bennings out into the snow you CLEARLY see his breath when he lets out his moan.
Solid point and I agree with you. Breath has nothing to do with trying to figure out who the thing is.
Top ten best movies ever ♥️
Easily! Love your profile pic! Another awesome Carpenter/Russell duo. I'll have to see if Big Trouble in Little China has some decent trivia to share!
THE THING and THE MIST an Fire In The Sky is on My favorite Top 10 favorite Syfy movie's 🎥 of All TIME. The Greatest Syfy film 🎥 Will Always be THE THING 👹from Another World.
I need to watch Fire in the Sky. Been on my list for awhile now.
Brilliant film.
Thanks for watching!
One of all-time favorites! Saw in on opening day, my (then) wife hated it. So? had it on laserdisc, have it on BluRay.
I love your content!
This movie stands alone. At the top.
It really is a masterpiece in the realm of sci-fi horror! Thanks for watching!
@@ZMAMShow
The blame I would put a bit more on myself.. earlier in the night I was watching a Disney video in my parents room while they were watching TV in the living room preparing for dinner but when it ended I switched to cable and saw this dog and thought great, must be like "old yeller" or "benji".. at a young age didn't really understand the concept of what was happening, just that they seem to have rescued a dog that some men where trying to shoot..
Best horror movie of all time
I think Alien tops this one for me, but it's a damn close 2nd. Like where your head's at! : )
I loved this movie gotta be in my top 5, and I love dead space 100% it was somewhat inspired by the monster from the thing
I saw it and loved it when it first came out! The critics were crazy! Carpenter was ahead of his time.
Totally! I love his movies. He is so underrated it's not funny. But we all know our truth!
in the last scene, Jiles and Mac, watch when Kurt speaks, you see his breath, when Jiles replies......you can't see his breath, nothing.
Hmmmm. Very interesting. I'll re-watch the scene soon. At first thought I'd say it was the lighting in the scene, because I remember the camera angle being very dark around Childs. But you may have something here.
Movie was instantly a classic when McReady threw whiskey in the computer saying “cheating bitch”
MacReady's character is one of the main reasons this movie is so awesome! Kurt Russell is a great actor, I've always enjoyed his performances. His one liners in this film are terrific. "Yea well F---, you too!" : )
@@ZMAMShow Kurt is a powerhouse
@@bubdubs5294 word!
Went to the theater and saw it twice before it was gone.
Love it! Wish I could have had a chance to see it once at release. Wasn’t born till ‘83 so I wasn’t on the chart yet… 😩

There's a fan theory that says Chiles was the thing at the end.
This film is brilliant, critics know nothing
Best horror movie ever made
I didn't mention it in my comment, but the only one(s) that top this for me is the original Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986).
@Move_I_Got_This "ohhhh brother... this guy STINKS!"
@@ecklectic9977 All true statements. And they don’t make movies like this anymore, because really they’d be just copied material. I do sympathize with todays writers. So many great things have been done in books and on screen. So many great ideas have been used. Hard to get an original idea.
@@FilthTribeFTP lol 😂 there’s at least one in every video.
Those negative reviews are simply unbelievable. How could they have possibly walked away from this and thought those incorrect thoughts?
The way they treated those poor dogs. Was the movie Pre PETA or Post PETA?
Not sure, but I don't think any dogs were harmed. True lurking around and scaring them to make howling noises isn't exactly awesome... But it did make for one heck of a movie.
Why did anyone ever listen to roger Ebert? He was so consistently wrong about movies, and clearly had a bias against horror movies.
This movie is benchmark of cinema horror. Those idiots who reviewed this film need to be banned. I loved it.
You ain’t lying! There’s many of us who feel the same. The masses don’t lie. 8.2 on IMDb w/ 425k reviews for a sci-fi horror movie from the early 80’s… now that’s saying something!
Anytime critics bash horror sci-fi it's a sign of a cult classic. They used real animal organs critics...
Says "looked fake"
Agreed! I don’t think most critics understand sci-fi or horror.
@@ZMAMShow yeah gme Joe Bob Briggs b movies w counts of boobs individually and decapitation etc. Sure not best of films but he call it how's he saw it 😄
Yeah it didn't take me 5 or 10 years 2 know how dope this movie wuz. I think it wuz jus square azz movie critics h8n on Carpenter. There wuz nuthin "Razzie" worthy about this flick. It's wuz dope frum day 1! ✊🏽🤨❤📽🎞
I'll say cheers to that! I remember from Day 1 that I was hooked on this movie! Carpenter's the man!
But to the end of the movie weren’t all bottles of booze gas? Or did the man save one bottle for when the “fat lady sings”?
Hmmm… to this I cannot say…
When it came out; the Audience: *This movie is garbage*
Watching modern movies now, i think the past movies don't hold a candle to them at all.
Fucking a here first. The Things a badass movie tho! I could imagine watching it for the first time in Antarctica.
Welcome & congrats on being the 1st! Dude this movie still creeps me out to this day. Always love tossing it on in the background when I'm editing. The idea that critics hated it is not surprising, but that the public didn't just blows my mind!
The negative reviews prove that critics are full of BS.
Critics cant do,so they complain about everyone else's stuff!Who gives a rats @$$ what they think. This is one of the all time great movies!!
John carpenter deserved better
Feel like he's always been an under-appreciated director/writer, etc. But we know better.
Love is a random shit mixer. Great things and people get destroyed, lucky for some, at least posterity can be positive.
great movie, pity the sfx look so shit.
