Definitely good to learn the lessons of safety. Years ago I was riding with my brother, with him behind the wheel on a mountain road, and him a little sleep deprived. We were on the way back down and I was enjoying the mountain air so much that I had the window down and I was sitting on the outside of the car window for a while. When I decided to go to sit where I was supposed to, on the passenger seat and put my seatbelt on I noticed that we were headed straight for a rock face at a curve on the road. I alerted my brother and he made a sharp turn and then we almost go down a cliff, and I alerted him to that and he makes another sharp turn. The next thing I know we were rolling in a roll over and we rolled several times. The car was pretty much totaled I guess and I scapes and cuts, along with a headache. My brother hardly got a scratch, but I hate to think about what could have happened if I didn't get back in the car when I did. 😬
Looking forward to your coverage of the upcoming season. My channel is based in East Texas. We are preparing for helping with tree cleanup. Theis year has us scrambling already. Let me know when you are my neck of the woods and we can colab.
I almost died choking on Mike and Ike’s when I was young because I just chew a few times and swallow, and sometimes there would be fire starting in my house cause of the stove.
You were doing 66mph in severe weather? I’ve seen people smash themselves and their cars up in perfect conditions doing lesser speed - you gotta slow down man!
Well I must say you are getting better and better at wheelin that Prius every time I watch a video! Kudos's to you for picking such an all around capable vehicle! ;-) I have been keeping my eye's peeled for new video's of the last month or so of those heavy storms you guys were having down there. Hope you were able to catch something. Keep on keeping on... stay safe and don't kill yourself!
Thank God you survived, you are ballsy as hell do this man, just the mere mention of a tornado watch scares the shit out of me. There pretty much one of my biggest fears. God bless you man, may he continue to protect you as he did here.
I had a wicked spinout in a heavy rainstorm once too. Came out alright, but the gas all sloshed to one side of the tank and the car stalled. I did a 180.
Whoa! Lots of time on the road and unhealthy gas station food seem to be the biggest occupational hazards of storm chasing. Glad you're still with us! Just a bit of news you might be interested in: the Extended Range Tornado Activity Forecast (ERTAF) group, the same team who predicted last year's late May tornado outbreak a month in advance, has issued an above-average tornado forecast for May 10-16. It's "low confidence" right now. I think they're waiting to see if tropical convection is going to line up right with atmospheric angular momentum breakdown. Still something to keep in mind as you enter the busy May season.
Hey brother, just a couple notes. Before storm season starts, in the middle of the season after a couple chases, and near the end before fall and winter, you always want to check your vehicle out, make sure you won't need an oil change in the near future, make sure all your tire tread depths are perfect and won't need to be changed in the near future, all your fluids are good to go and won't need to be changed in the near future, always make sure you pack a bag or a small box filled with emergency vehicle repair items, like fix a flat, a small toolkit designed for vehicle repairs, and other various steps that I am missing for this comment, but won't miss for storm season. Another note is that when you started to skid, you over corrected the skid and that was a contributing factor into sending your Prius into the ditch. I experienced my own over correcting skid back in the Winter of 2017-18, and keep in mind, I live in Maine, when it had been snowing and I was going the posted speed limit on the DOT signs, which say to go 45-55, I was going around a happy medium of 50, just to make sure I could still stop if I needed to. Anyways, I felt the rear of the car start to go sideways, so I turned the opposite just ever so slightly, probably about a half inch turn of the steering wheel. I started to go correct ways, but then I started to go the other way, with my passenger side facing oncoming traffic, and that is when I made the BRILLIANT decision to start hitting the brakes, in tapping intervals, and turning the wheel so that i would face the right way, then I went back sideways. After a couple over corrects, I really threw it in and started going 360* and went in a half circle on the on ramp to the highway. I was doing full spins for about 1/4 miles, until it all stopped and I pulled off to the side of the road to get a handle on what had happened. I went back and reviewed the area where I was spinning, and noticed how close I was to the embankment on the passenger side of the road, just before the guardrail had started. Quick measurement (as I didn't have a ruler or tape measure handy, obviously) was around 6 inches to a foot. My dad came after I called him to tell him what had happened, and he told me that Someone must have been looking out for me. I agree, to this day, and I am 100% thankful I didn't die that night, or wreck.
dude when i was into cubing and memorizing pi i found your first channel but then you stopped uploading. I got into weather later (although it was a phase, it still interests me) and now I see that you are active on youtube and uploading all this time later, you brought back a bit of my childhood and glad to see you succeeding in life and living it to its fullest
Keep in mind there's a layer of icy slush on the road from the hail. I agree with you that a truck would be better suited for storm chasing. But even for a truck, hail/slush is a unique environmental factor, especially considering his speed. His hydroplaning started at ~66 mph.
Glad you’re all right and doing just fine. It would be nice to meet you one of these days since you live in Colorado Springs. So do I. Safe travels my friend.
From my experience (230k+ miles in a Gen 2 Prius, I have chased in it since 2011) it is actually quite stable a vehicle on wet roads if you have good tires, I had hydroplaned a half dozen times in a 2004 Impala while chasing and have only hydroplaned once in my Prius. Glad you were alright.
New sub here watching. We had an EF1 tear through my town two weeks ago and was the first one in over a hundred years. It was more interesting than scary. I now understand why so many people die in these. After the phone warning then sirens going off it hit us less than four minutes later. Keep safe out there.
Driving is scary, one time when I was driving (I was driving my 1999 Chevy Tahoe, lifts 9 inches with steel bumpers and a scratch proof paint) I picked up my friend and while we were going through a green light a lady with a blinking left turn light decided she could go, next thing I knew I had an impala under my car, both cars got completely totaled bad the lady had to get rushed to the hospital, the entire underside of my truck got torn off when they pried the 2 cars apart, a truly terrifying moment
Excellent video. Yeah gotta slow down in those core punches no matter how eager we are to get on the next storm! Been there done that--We've all been there.
Clear back in 1984 I was driving my Pinto home from a gig I played late at night . I saw heavy storms and lightning to the north so I took a long way around. As I was driving north, out of nowhere something hit the back side of my car so hard it knocked me sideways and I ended up in a large ditch sliding straight backwards in the wet grass. I checked for damage or at least a large dent and there was nothing. The only thing I can think of that hit me that hard without leaving a dent in my car would have been a small tornado. Very strange indeed. I was very lucky. I was able to drive my Pinto out of the ditch and go on home.
Slow down in severe weather for sure, and also kudos to the 2nd gen prius! I have one and they are absolute tanks! Most other cars might have been totaled after that!
Reminds me when I was in Germany with my family, it was a sunny day and there was a huge 90 degree turn It was a 1 lane for each and a big truck was coming from the other lane and as we were turning left (their turn is right obv) when suddenly a pickup truck was bypassing the truck and as soon as that pickup driver saw us he rammed his breaks and started losing control, we also pressed the breaks really slowly and noticed how the big truck started accelerating to allow the pickup truck to go return to the lane, it happened in mere 5 seconds period of time, we almost pissed ourselves and my dad which was the driver was ready to turn his wheels to the right so we would go off to the field
I live in Indiana. All I have to do to get close to a tornado is stay home. One will eventually form near me. A black cloud F0 swept the street just 800 yards from my house 4 years ago. It was brief and probably went un-noticed by the NWS but it did occur during a watch and I sure did see it.
Ran from the 2013 El Reno tornado. Left about 10 min before Paul and Tim Samaras did. Interestingly enough we were driving the exact same kind of vehicle as them. However we were pretty spooked after all that so we tried to go as far south as possible. Got down to Norman and the storm had shifted south. About that time Mike Morgan on KFOR told everyone to head south or they would die and the roads were packed. Tried to get on a side road and ended up in a neighborhood. We tried to come out of the neighborhood and Tboned a truck that was coming over the hill. My partner was driving and I begged him to run the stop sign. He didnt and because of those extra 3 or 4 seconds we hit the truck. The truck spun out and snapped an axle. The impact was on my side and luckily a side airbag probably saved my life. We were all ok but it was hailing, the sirens were going off, and a tornado warned storm was bearing down on us. Thankfully a family in the neighborhood heard the accident and took us in to their home. Turns out the guy in the truck had just lost his home from the tornado. After the storm passed they took us to the hospital to get checked out. While riding home from the hospital with a friend we got into another head on collision. Its was a wild day. The El Reno storm basically tried to kill me three times. I've only been chasing a handful of times since then.
Hey man, you just earned a new Sub today. Be safe out there and film those beautiful monsters! P.s Also maybe try not going 60+ during rain and hail. :)
The part when you almost crashed into and you said ahhhhhh very loud it was like crazy i hope you ok oh and when you almost crashed to the power line it was like a loud loud loud boombox on max volume or like the dab animations 😂😂😂
last time i watched one of your videos was waayyyy back when you were doing rubiks cubes and im wondering if you still do them but just dont record them, anyways im glad you found a new thing that interests you.
You gotta focus and keep your cool when that shit happens, you literally have a split second to make the right decisions to try wrestle control back. This guy looks like he made the right decisions (not over correcting too much mainly) hard to say with total conviction without seeing his further input to the wheel. I personally probably would've given the brakes a bit of a slap to throw weight forward onto the front tyres (for more steering command, not sure how much help that'd be in such wet weather) but idk, you have a really tiny amount of time to try reduce speed and reduce sliding.
Watch his next video be "I upgraded my Prius". I can just imagine it now, a Prius fitted with armor, off-road tires, and a better engine / transmission.

Man, chasing tornadoes isn't the safest, but you get your memories from it. Keep it up Pi!💯
It's pretty dangerous but if you well experiences it's good but sometimes it's risky to be to close

And focus too

That’s why you don’t storm chase in a Prius, you need like a truck or something
You really don't.
Stuart Milliner you need something better than a prius.
Keep in mind there's a layer of icy slush on the road from the hail. I agree with you that a truck would be better suited for storm chasing. But even for a truck, hail/slush is a unique environmental factor, especially considering his speed. His hydroplaning started at ~66 mph.
Gonna need good tires and an all wheel drive minimum
He just needs something to go through mud and low to the ground therefore he can’t be sucked up
Glad you’re all right and doing just fine. It would be nice to meet you one of these days since you live in Colorado Springs. So do I. Safe travels my friend.

Broooooo WOW!!!! .....stay safe!! 60mph its too much in this condition! Meteo fun from Greece!
For sure you do got guts mahh man props 👊✊👊✊
60 mph in weather conditions like that is a terrible idea, it takes 35 mph to hydroplane a car
Reminds me when I was in Germany with my family, it was a sunny day and there was a huge 90 degree turn

Yikes! That was close, Pi!
At 0:54 he barely missed a telephone pole
Why are there so many railfans in the comments Lol?
Wow man, glad your ok, must have been super scary in those few seconds
damn that was close...
there are tires made that help with hydroplane so that its more unlikely -also speed is a huge factor
Hey man, you just earned a new Sub today. Be safe out there and film those beautiful monsters!
P.s Also maybe try not going 60+ during rain and hail. :)
Wow,that is crazy!
Good thing you did not end up rolling just like one of the weather channel’s vehicles.
Edit: that was 2017
Well, are you referring to 2017 or the 2013 el Reno tornado where it rolled the SUV with Mike Bettes?
Woah
It's like the last thing we think about the risk in storm chasing
The part when you almost crashed into and you said ahhhhhh very loud it was like crazy i hope you ok oh and when you almost crashed to the power line it was like a loud loud loud boombox on max volume or like the dab animations 😂😂😂
