Ruins of 1933 Civil Conservation Corps Camp / Car Camp

- I found this camp at Masten PA. The remnants of the Ghostown Masten an old sawmill town from the late 1800's thar eventually became the site of the Masten Civil Conservation Corps in 1933 to 1943. this old stone fireplace was part of the camp and I had the opportunity to make a fire and cook in front of it. I make a dinner dessert and then breakfast in the morning what a beautiful location I did not see a single person for 2 days.

The CCC played a positive role in countless lives during hard times.
Yes it was a great program And did a lot for both Young men and for our state parks And roads and trails
God I love it. We have ones like this around here in the Old Growth Forest at Laurel Hill State Park. That's a lot of history most young people don't know about today. Those people built America in those days. Such a great location

Could have made a little pine broom to clean up that front of the fireplace real quick. I would have added a few river stones to the front of that fireplace to ensure coals and ash stayed inside - you know to improve the quality of the experience of the fire. Otherwise Tony, glad I joined you on this little journey. Appreciate someone my age getting out there and taking advantage of what is offered.
Yeah I did get a chance to clean it off some I used one of the logs and then a rag that I had but you're right and I did have a couple stones in the front to catch any logs that started to roll if I wouldn't have been so cold there were some larger Stones behind it that I could have put up in front of it but I wish I had a shovel to clean it out I didn't want to get too much up there and then come by and eventually try to clean it out

This was a very historic place just the amount of stones that built that fireplace into imagine the very first time that they lit a fire in it and I got to experience it so many years later just to think of all the people that sat by it or were fed by it or were kept born by it it's amazing to think about yes perfect place to drink a cup of coffee and I hope we do get a chance to catch some bunnies and deer and other things in the camera we'll see yes you're right I don't want to see anything creepy LOL

It was amazing you got to try it I probably shouldn't have flipped it and just kept the hot pepper oil and stuff right on top of it underneath the fluff then the cheese not flipped the burger so next time I won't flip it I'm sure it'll be even much much more better might throw a few pickles on there too
Hello Mr. 2.0 , just wanted to share with you here in Michigan we have a cherry burger. Chopped cherries added to ground beef , pat out and fry. And add you favorite cheese to top it off. If you try it I hope you enjoy. I do soak my cherries in a little liquid to make them softer before I chop them. Hope your weekend is blessed .

Yes that is a very old fireplace and a lot of history right in that location
I recognized that road and that fire place immediately! Masten is a unique area and the Okd Logger’s Path is a favorite of mine. My first time out on that trail I camped at Sprout Point Vista shelter and it dropped down to 16°F overnight.
Tony you should check out Penn Roosevelt SP and the CCC camp there.
Yes it's a beautiful spot I've often wondered about the old loggers path I've heard about it many times and 16° F that's cold
Amazing spot, I might have to check it out. You should invest in a electric blanket. Very helpful on cold nights in the outback.
You're right I have thought about a camping blanket several times that would be Electric cuz I've got the juice believe it or not I was nice and warm under that camping blanket from one wind things amazing but towards morning my toes did start getting a little cold

Yes I have heard of them but I had never really knew much about them but yeah Just reading what it said on the sign how much good they've done across our country during that time Amazing It helped both the country and the families of the young men

That's definitely a heck of a combo for a burger. Not sure if you have Sonic the drive-in restaurant where you're home base is .. they just came out with a peanut butter and bacon burger, and I just kind of looked at the tv sideways. Peanut butter and fluff are some of my favorites not too many Sonic's around me but there is one that I know of I've never eaten there. Yes if you get a chance to try it you got to try this one with the hot sauce really good

This is where Lisa and I will be camping for the 15K special
I'm not 100% sure bit I think there's still one or two ccc camps still in operation in vinton county ohio near Lake hope state park. Back in 97 when I was a deputy sheriff one of our sheriff's that I worked with would drive the back roads around lake hope and we always went past 2 cabins that had the ccc signs on them. Never seen any vehicles parked at them but they were well kept and not run down looking.
Yeah there is probably not many left to standing unless it was cared for and preserved but that would be cool to know and visit
@@randomadventures2.0 they sit right nest to the road or not far from it. If I could remember the road I could check it out. My grandpa on my mom's side worked for ccc when he was younger as well. Not sure where he was at during that time. He also did stuff with the boy scouts when my mom was little.

I'm planning to do a hot tent camp soon just need to feel better and it's a little bit of a logistics issue of finding a right place and how I can get it to the spot

Tony, I think car camping is a fun and easy way to camp once you are set up for it, like you are. You didn't show the lighting of the fire. Did the Tumble Weeds light ok with the Fire Starter?? I never tried them with a striker only with a lighter or match. Hope they worked ok for you. I enjoyed your video. Jake McClellan The Oregon Boy 👦
Yeah Jake my hands were so cold I was having trouble with the fire Striker holding it in my one hand so I gave up after a little bit and just went straight for the lighter but they worked fantastic I'm not sure how easy they would be to fire strike and Light but hey that's why we got lighters LOL
