Dr. Duke saved my son's life in 1997. I will always cherish the time I got to spend with Dr. Duke. He was incredible and sorely missed.

I am a nurse who worked with and for Dr. Duke in the trauma area of Memorial Hermann emergency room. I was an honor and a pleasure to watch him work and to be able to learn so much from him. When a trauma patient would be brought in, he wanted the chest x-ray done first. You had best not to be in the way of that patient getting that film done. I also worked on the Burn unit in that same facility and occasionally Dr. Duke would cover for one of the burn physicians while they were off. Due to the large amounts of narcotics that our severely burned patients would receive, a common problem was constipation. I would dread the nights when he would round, and order milk and molasses enemas. I was never able to look at milk or molasses quite the same way after those experiences. Finally, speaking as a former trauma patient who was brought into the ED and seen by Dr. Duke, I was very frightened on that stretcher when EMS brought me in. I remember seeing his face, and thinking I would be okay because he was there. I had a major hand injury, but was otherwise okay. I was supposed to be the Trauma Research nurse on call that Friday night, and when he found out he said, "You can't be on-call tonight or the weekend, we'll make do." I am really proud of the time I spent there in Houston.

I was in the experimental UTHSC Paramedic Class in 1978. Dr. Duke spent the first 10 minutes in class looking for a Coke can to spit (Copenhagen) in. After that, he taught all our Cardiology modules and many of our Trauma modules. He always seemed to remember us when we'd bring a patient in to Hermann. What a great doctor and nice man.

I will forever be grateful to Dr. "Red" Duke. I suffered a traumatic accident that resulted in the amputation of my left lower leg. While other doctors wanted to amputate my knee as well, Dr. Duke made sure I kept my knee's function for years to come. With the advancement of prosthetic I lead a normal life as I did before my accident. Thanks to this man's knowledge and patience. Thank you so much Dr. Duke.

I would see Dr. Duke's reports on local TV San Antonio when I lived there in the 80's. This tribute brings tears to my eyes. There are some people who should live forever. Dr. Red Duke is one of these people.

I had the honor of working with Dr. Duke when I was a Helicopter EMT (Ground Support) and was in a couple of scenes with him when the Life Line show was taped there. I can attest to the fact that he was a great man. Fly high Dr. Duke!

I worked at Memorial Hermann hospital starting in 2010 as a Biomedical Engineer. On my second day on the job I met Dr. Red Duke. I was stunned as if I seen a rock star. He spoke to me and he was so friendly. He made me feel proud to say I met the man.

So humble, so compassionate, and such a big heart. I first met DrRed Duke randomly in the hallway of the hospital where I had just started a rotation and was lost . he had no name tag, no white coat. Just a guy with an a awesome Texas twang and cowboy boots. We chatted for a while and I never realized who he was until afterwards when another student pointed it out to me. He didn't carry an ounce of arrogance in him, he was a man not interested in being recognized. Just interested in serving. Heaven gained an angel yesterday. Bet he's the loudest Yell leader up there.

I used to run into Dr. Red Duke when I was a kid with my sister & my mother visiting one of her older brothers in the hospital (both of them also passed when my sister & I were kids). I would never forget how Dr. Red Duke never seemed to be in a hurry and he would have long conversations with us. I even recall once where he showed us a finger trick where it would look like he pulls his thumb apart. I really thank him for all of the times he used to entertain us. R.I.P. Dr. Red Duke. You will be deeply missed.

Outside OR he was the nicest man you'd ever meet but in the OR he was serious and he would ask his students questions and if you got a question wrong he cussed like a sailor but what an amazing doctor saved many lives its crazy and teaching the next generation RIP

I had been in Texas for a few years came across this very interesting man on local DFW television. He would have been my pick for a doctor just like Landry would have been my pick for my only coach. I sure hope he knew Jesus as His Lord and Savior for I want some time in eternity to get to know him. Thus it is with a heavy heart this news comes as shock to me of his death. Please convey my best to his surviving family. He was a real Texan. I cannot think of a better compliment of his character and larger than life persona.
