- Using only three microphones, see how Noam & Jessica recreate the driven drums of The Black Keys' modern classic single "Tighten Up". Keep an eye out for a couple "secret" ingredients, like a SansAmp pedal.

The drum sound on the entire "Brothers" album is fantastic.
Thank mark neill
@@TweezerBleezer123Tchad Blake mixes all pat’s drums😊
Thanks mark neill
khruangbin's drum sound next.
Love this series!
I would love to see you cover a king gizzard song maybe off of mind fuzz or something where they were utilizing 2 drummers (or maybe nuclear fusion off of FMB)
Just to see the challenges of dynamically recording two drummers actively working with each other
Mind fuzz was recorded with just 2 mics believe it or not! Not sure what they had on the kick but they had some kind of large ribbon mic on the overhead. If you've seen Kind Gizzard's Bootleg Holiday From Hell there's some footage in there of them recording mind fuzz
Absolutely love this, been obsessed with this drum sound for a long time!
I love how that distortion is just right on the edge. Great sound and great tips!
thanks for this one! always loved the sound of BK’s drums in general and the production on Brothers is legendary
Always enjoy these. Well done.
Thanks Noam and Jessica for your efforts and demonstration of various drum related performances with similar equipment.
Fantastic sound and drumming as always!
I was about to suggets this sound, Thanks!! You read my mind!
i love this but i'll never stop asking for a video on Grizzly Bear's Painted Ruins drum sound 🙏
like the song Aquarian has an INCREDIBLE drum sound
the snare on that record is wild.
Shout out to Mark Neil, M Allen Parker, and Tchad Blake. They have made many a Dan Auerbach album sound absolutely amazing.
But you don't create that sound through the processing in this video. Way too muddy. And that added tone is yuck. The tone must be in the recording. You can't add that to get that Brothers sound. The original drums sounded great though in this video.
This episode was particularly fascinating
What is exactly the multi band compression doing here? Maybe showing the plugin will be a good idea, just saying.
yeah, in fact mb-compressor is the #1 plugin of all the possible production/mixing tools that should be accompanied by a visual representation of its setup if it is mentioned in any kind of context, ‘cause if it is present in FX chain, it most likely does the most of the job on the resulting signature sound, and if every other tool is [generally speaking] possible to recreate by ear in a reasonable timeframe (reverbs, saturators, 1-band compressors, etc.), recreation of a specific mb-cmp preset just from hearing the resulting signal - is a pure fucking nightmarish torture. even if the freq crosspoints were available as bare minimum of input conditions, it would be significantly easier already. but otherwise - it can take a hell ton of time, ‘cause of a shit load of parameters on the processor. and just to clarify - this rant is coming from someone who interacts with multiband compressors on regular basis for the last 15 years - still it never gets much easier lol. love these dynamic processors just as much as i hate them.
Love you guys for this, thank you! great free or paid drums are hard to find.
I love this. Tighten Up was the song that taught me how to play drums! (Probably why I have a weird way of playing aha)
I was hoping you’d do “Strange Times”, with that huge sounding drum intro.
day 2 of requesting "tired of sex" by weezer. absolutely insane and unique sounding drum tone. apparently it was mostly room mics, which is interesting. would also make sense because of the recent resurgence of weezer in internet culture.
I second that. One of the best rock drum sounds ever.
Tchad Blake is a truly unique mixer with a truly unique sound. He really does stand out. To the Reverb team: it would be fantastic if you guys would share presets (EQ carving, Satin taming, etc) so the DIY-Music community could experiment with these techniques.
Can you guys PLEASE do a Shawn Everett drum sound?! Anything off of Alabama Shakes Sound and Color or Jenny Lewis Down the Line or even Chicano Batman Color My Life? Any Shawn Everett- those sounds are bonkers!!
Hey, Reverb did a video on “Don’t Wanna Fight No More”
I love learning about drum production, but could it hurt to have some more of these videos that involve a full kit? ride cymbals and rack toms especially
OXFORD INFLATOR is actually a waveshaper, it works like a charm ... great video as always! :)
Came here to say this! So many years of mystery aaaand... It's a waveshaper. For those curious, search for the Reaper forum about this
Great video as usual . I was wondering why am i not able to download some of your older drum sample packs ? Is there a site i can go to directly to download all of them ? Thanks again for creating this excellent content and paying attention to detail
Well done and excellent choice of song! I agree with the overall feel, but to me the room is a bit darker and less “punchy” than the source material, but very close and sounds nice. Great work.
Kings of Leon - Use Somebody 🔥
Blake inverts the phase of the parallel distorted kick. The weird spatial thing he gets is from his SRS - which is an old device made for consumer home surround-sound systems - and/or his discontinued Amp Farm plugin called Tape Eater. This drum sound is cool nonetheless.
go-getter drums were just life.
Can you do the micing for Oxford Comma by Vampire Weekend?
Thank uuuuu
dopeeee
Can you do Mushroom or Vitamin C by Can?
Yesssss
+1
This sounds dope! But why only 1 kick drum sample included? 😢 Do you sell a premium version of this with more hits/round robins? 🙏
The yellow stained pillow was essential to the tone
2 bajillion dollar mics and a 57 😂. Love that 57
Right
So is the side mic equidistant from the overhead mic or?
These videos are the best! I would like to see Fleetwood Mac Rumours drum sound
They’ve already done this
yep, look for it on their Reverb page along with all the other free packs they produce within the framework of this series. this episode was released ~1yr ago or somewhere close to that
nice
LOL the Oxford Inflator is a mystery of the world, but a tasty tool to have.
PLEASE can you do the drum sound of Khruangbin?
😎👌 cool
Rival Sons drum sound ❤
I DARE you guys to try "The Noose" by A Perfect Circle! KILLER Andy Wallace Drum Sound! 🍻from🇨🇦
"that midrange that's starting to get a bit midrangey" is a phrase only engineers understand :)
What size is that vistalite kick? It sounds giant!
It looks like a 22"x14" which was the most common size sold in the 70s.
I would love to see you take on Reckoner by Radiohead! The way the ride cymbal is in that song is kjfhkj;lfhlkefad
this is a very accurate description of the ride cymbal on this track. couldn’t say better myself
Sound & Color by Alabama Shakes?
do "It Might Be Time" by Tame Impala!
The oxford thing sounds like its added a slapback delay, amongst other things
10:35 Me too man, me too
Right?
Watched a Deadweather show on here the other day. Could make a cool breakdown?
Please do Nirvana Unplugged drum sound xx
JOY DIVISION WHEN
Can we get a grosser looking pillow in the kick next time? Thanks!
you should try getting these sounds with budget gear too, we don't all have $1k+ to spend on each mic
This is a great content suggestion, recreating sounds on a budget
The mics don’t matter
There are questionable stains on that pillow, but it definitely does the job.
right?
Mac demarco drum sound would be cool
Mark Neil the producer is the genius behind that record
It sounds better because of the aliasing in the Inflator and Decapitator 😅
Jahat
You are too in time. 😅
'need this' 'I got a plugin for that'... 'need that' 'I got a plugin for that'... 'but what about...' 'yeah, I got a plugin for that' It makes me wonder what is even real anymore in recorded acoustic expression or recorded music in general. A good video to learn what is possible with current tech.
Where have you been? Also, why does it matter if it's a plugin or hardware?
Where have you been? Shure level loc (sound toy devil lok) is from the 60s 😅 also 1176 and L2A2 are from the 60s… audio engineering is not new
Respectfully, you may have some weird ideas about what a plug-in is or how it works... A well-designed digital EQ is going to be more or less mathematically equivalent to an analog EQ, just without the non-linearities. Most plugins are emulating hardware anyway, and these days a lot of them get pretty close. With the exception of quantizing and pitch correction, most audio processing these days is pretty much the same as what was done in the analog domain in the past
Love the content, but soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many "rights?" It really gets tiresome to listen to.
Ask the people in your life what words you tend to repeat. We all do it.
@@SeeMick1 No doubt.
Right?
