  • I definitely enjoyed the challenge of virtually collaborating with UNT's 3 O'clock Lab Band for this very intricate and tricky arrangement of Shade Of Jade by Joe Henderson.
This was recorded for the final concert of the Jazz Trombone Day 2020.
    Conductor: Nick Finzer
Solos: Max Santana - Trombone, Anthony Bolden - Tenor, Elliot Mason - Trombone guest soloist
Visit my Patreon Page / emason to watch me talk through my final thought process right before recording.
I discuss: Understanding the architecture of the arrangement/solo section, hearing the voicings/voice leading of the backgrounds, handing off the solo to the ensemble, listening for potential moments to interact with the rhythm section, recording while social distancing, how many takes I plan on taking, asking them to not Aebersold me! and.. how to give myself a road map of information to help guide me to make stronger musical decisions while staying in the moment.

Yeah, Eliot! You were not only in a different studio but on another planet. Your upper register seems to be especially crisp and clear these days. Would be interested to know if any particular exercises have helped.

His high register is really killing here! I was just about to google "how to sound like Elliot Mason" for the 70th time haha

hah.. Hey Will, I've recorded some lessons on Range/Flexibility, Language etc on my Patreon and/or we can talk about any problems or brick walls you feel like you're dealing with.

Hey Phil, I feel like I'm getting results from hitting extreme ranges from in a few diverse ways. Caruso esc long tones that deal with extreme stamina, and then forcing myself to play lines up/down there, making sure I'm hearing music in those registers. I go deeper into the kind of exercises I'm doing on my Patreon, hope this helps!

@@elliotmason wow... I'm star struck haha you've been my hero since I've found you, it means the world to me that you'd take the time to reply!! Your bass trumpet playing changed my life as well.
I know on another video you mentioned that you do mostly single and that when you do utilize the doodle it's more of a "dar-dul", is this still accurate?
I think articulation is one of my main walls, getting that clarity and definition at all tempos like you and McChesney have (doodle studies and etudes has been my Bible for years). Clark Terry and Clifford come to mind as well.
I think working my single tongue up is helping a bunch, seems to make my doodle better. Gaining more lip flexibility also seems to do wonders.
Sorry for the long reply, I probably should take it to your patreon :)

My model BAC Signature Series is a hybrid, small bore slide into a medium bore bell (+ many hours tweaking tuning and how it slots!)

I believe this is it, although his might be set up a bit differently. What a gorgeous horn :)
