- Only 1% of golfers get to that elusive scratch handicap. So what do they do that helps them save shots?
Hannah Holden dug into the Shot Scope data to find out.

Great video, and I realized that in order to become a better golfer I just need to work on every aspect of my game and hit the ball way better with every club, from my driver to my putter. Shouldn't be too hard, its just grass.
7:04 learning that one or two bounce in the fringe pitch is really good to learn.
My grandmother was a great golfer, and state champion a couple of times in the 1930's. She always told me not to try to stop the ball on a dime, but instead, to focus on learning to pitch and run. I try that shot often, and it is indeed very handy.
Glad to see your human Hannah. That last chip shot is more indicative of us average golfers. You handled it like one of us!
As someone who is a low marker, I think Hannah's video is absolutely spot on and very well communicated (much better than I could). Many people I play with could be (and want to be) much better golfers than they are - and they hit the ball okay; however, I very often think they are not very observant or very organised, and could easily do Hannah's straightforward non-technical suggestions and thus improve a lot. Can be frustrating and a bit sad to observe, actually.
Many of these things mentioned can be worked out fairly easily as you walk up to the ball, and take little or no time - so no slow play or over-analysis involved (e.g. realise the course is different every day, the tee markers are further back today - so longer shot in, this hole is uphill, today the wind is from another direction, the ground is damp today because it rained overnight - so less run, shots always kick right on this hole, look at today's pin position and pick a target so you don't short side yourself with a slightly missed approach, play the simplest shot for you in each situation, take your medicine when in trouble to avoid a double bogey etc, be prepared to change your plan once you get to your ball and see your lie {if it is bad}, play with better players when you can and quietly observe and learn how they go about organising their round and playing the course). Try it, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I think people really do underestimate how much these little things all add up to make a huge difference to scoring!
Totally agree I’m only at 11 right now with a target of 5 by end of next year. Had barley broken 90 all year this year after some time out. Put time into my short game and a lot of what’s said in this video and haven’t shot above 85 in the last 2 months. Loads to take from leaving ego in the car and playing percentage shots. 👍👍
Y’all like the kids on COD that say the people you play with are trash without saying they’re trash
This video was very well presented. I'm a 2.2 HCP, so not quite scratch, but close enough I can relate. I need to take off one more putt and one better club selection per round on average to get there.
94% from 6 feet for a scratch golfer can't be right. Sounds more like the likelihood from 3 feet. The pros are roughly 75% from 6 feet.
Exactly. No way.
Arccos analysis suggests tour pros hole: 98% inside 2 feet, 62% 3-5 ft, 43% from 6-9 feet….
Remember, these figures come from the elite golf pros who play on generally fast and smooth greens that generally run true.
However, as Hannah says, holing 94% inside 6ft, and you will almost certainly score consistently well.
It does seem high to me but that is what the Shot Scope data shows! remember these will be mainly club golfers who are recording rounds at their home club every week on significantly easier greens which will likely play a big factor in this
@@hannahholdenNCG Systems such as shot scope and Arccos are great, but putting is one area where they're more difficult to use. I suspect the data is not as strong in this area and that's a large part of the discrepency.
@@wadesworld6250 Yes I agree
Didn't start golfing until other sports rejected my aging body, after 2 seasons I realised that I was "beating myself up" . I realised that this was the course's job so why should I help it?
I stopped & my golf improved immensely, not only that but watching others meltdown in competition sort of proved the point..
Great videos, it's all about hitting fairways & knowing your limitations.
Golf tells a lot about people on and off the course, if a person is "melting down" at the average age of the typical golfer they really need to get a grip!
As a new golfer...I do use my driver to get it the green. I typically can hit long, straight and hard. My long game is good...now focusing on my short putter game. Great tips.
Plenty of food for thought. Thanks !
I used to be a scratch golfer before I gave the game up 10 years ago.....thinking back i was an accurate iron player so rarely missed a green and if I did my short game was good so I was virtually always up and down...even if I was wayward off the tee either my approach play or short game always allowed me to scramble well....but the biggest thing was knowing my ability i never thought about dropping shots and what if I cant get them back...from the moment I hit my first tee shot I was confident in my ability to play golf at that level and more often than not I did I would never panic or doubt myself i think that trait is what most scratch or plus golfers have.
I think that’s a trait of most high level professional sportsmen and women. Believe in your ability, single mindedness. Never doubt yourself and know that even if your first shot isn’t quite up to scratch…you have the ability to make up for it on your second and third!!
@@AsadKhan-lm6yr totally agree 👍 well said........im back playing again now and have been back playing for 6 months and already shooting in the 70s because of this!! I still have that mind set ....the confidence in my ability 👍

@@TheTraditionalGolfer Hey Jackson, great to hear this. I've been through the same and I've taken up golf again this year. What a great sport this is, so glad to be able to play with my mates, and feel the thrill of the competition again: I feel so much more alive thanks to this !

I’d suck at golf no matter what, but I absolutely love that accent. That’s enough reason to subscribe
Yorkshire accents are the best...
I like she backs up her opinion with stats. I didn't know scratch palyers only hit 62% of greens and make a large % of shorter putts. I'm a 7 index and average 3 or more 3 putts per game and hit about 50% of my 5-6 foot putts. A good day for me on the greens if I can have 36 putts or less for 18. I guess I need to practice my putting.
I like that she backs it up with an awesome swing!
Nice video..common sense. I think my big issue is club selection into greens which comes with thinking I can do more with the lie than is possible and relying too much on distance rather than taking all factors into account. Great job.
While I agree with all you said, I would add that technique is probably more important than you alluded to as scratch golfers are going to mishit less often.
Agree, but I wanted to focus on non technical elements, some people just don't want to change their technique!
One of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time that will actually lower my scores

Thank you!!
Awesome video. These are all simple issues that are easily improved with a little effort.
For me, you answered the question before you asked it. You made the putt, then asked "What is it that Scratch Golfers do better...". Mmhmm, they make their putts. I use ShotScope to track my shots, allowing me to go back and relive the misery of a round a week or so ago, which was an extreme example of what I can do well (at times), and where I struggle (always). I had three shots that i hit into trouble, and had to hit out. I can live with that. Except for those, my irons and woods were amazing (for me), and I hit all greens in regulation but 2, with an average distance to the pin of 30 feet. There ends the good. I took 46 putts, missing putts of 2,3,4,4,4,5,5,5,7,10,11,11,12,12,13, and 16 feet. I did make one 7 foot putt, and one 3 foot putt, but otherwise I had to get to within 2 feet or less before I could make a putt.
Your suggestions are dead on, and great advice. I'm working on adjusting my club selection for uphill or downhill lies, for example. I'm also trying to pay attention to the slope of fairways, and which way the ball is likely to bounce, as well as the better side of the green to miss on. An important tip, for me, is for me to try to get less "cute" with chipshots into the short side of the green, and focus more on just being on the green. But, in the end, I need to get a lot better an reading putts, and improve my accuracy from 4-10 feet substantially. With improvements in putting, and a few of your other tips, I think I can get from my current 12 down to mid single digits next year. Scratch? We'll see. ;)
Spot on love how you simplyfy the game
Thanks!
Thanks for the tips Hannah, excellent job. Also, you are looking great out there.
Great video and tips! You don't know it but you are one of my main golf coaches thanks to RUclips. Loved the last 5 seconds.
Wow, thank you!! 🤩
Very good explanation. Thank you
3:49 ---- well, in some sense yes, but also having the ability to play a shot that travels under the trees.... meaning in your "example" i would have chipped/punched out a 3iron for the 140 meters to the green, and have still an up&down chance to save par. It's having the skill in your swing to vary and shape shots from left to right, high to low especially practicing shooting it through narrow windows.
One things I’ve noticed is ego for club distances.. yes you might hit your iron so far on a great shot 1 out 10 swinging hard.
Take an extra club and swing smooth.
Only 5% of amateur shots go long of the green, It’s mostly coming up short.
(Get the distance to the back of the green)
fantastic advice. I agree with everything you have noted.
I have been out of the game for many years, and just got back into it last year. Shot par for 9 holes last week on a moderately challenging course. It was a great feeling. You really need a few big aspects of your game working. Drive off the tee without putting yourself into the trees all the time. Hit your second shot on to the green - a lot! Be good with lag putts from 30 feet. Always make the short putts. And be able to make one or two birdies per round, because you probably will miss one or two of the short putts! And be reasonably good out of the sand too, because you’ll probably end up in there at least once per round.
What a nice swing Hannah has ! Impressive
Great video. Thanks.
“Scratch golfers simply don’t three putt as much as you do” I feel personally attacked 😂
🤣🤣🤣 whoops!
Course management is everything. I'm currently a +4 (somehow) and I'm strictly a plotter. Putting is all about attitude as well. Probably the worst thing you can think about over the ball are statistics.
People really underestimate the importance of good course management
@@hannahholdenNCG high handicap players (most) could immediately drop 10 shots if they thought better on the course

I really enjoyed this. Thx! Great tips.

Excellent video 👏👏👏. Best wishes!!!
I’ve been clubbing up recently and end up hitting absolute smashes over the green. I think I carried my 8i almost 170yrds by accident the other week, so hasn’t really been working for me.
i would say this is more about scratch golfers are very good with knowing their numbers. If you ask a +3 to -4 player to hit a 165 shot he will be inside 5 yards tops. so work on dialing in your distance numbers m8 :) you got it :)
Great video Hannah love your channel thank you.
Excellent Hannah 👍
Thanks first time watching great advice
Thanks!!
Excellent video!
The 6 foot stat is wrong but otherwise a good video. Remember these are averages. I’ve met scratch golfers that did many things well and a few things poorly. The opposite although unlikely is true as well. It was somewhat mentioned but scratch golfers make bogies. Plus golfers make bogies. Proximity to the hole should be mentioned but stats for amateurs don’t exist. Long story short low handicap golfers make birdies on some holes.
The 6-foot stat isn't wrong, it looks inflamed because it is for all putts inside 6 foot so 1ft and 2ft being at 100 and 3ft at 90 odd blow the numbers up :) yes proximity is one of the most important stats for scoring!
Subscribing purely because this pro and this video. More like this and more of her please 🎉

I'm loving those tips too. And those legs, Oh my.

The main ingredient is having hours and hours spare to practice. You will never play every other week and get down to scratch. The advice on this video can translate to anyone looking get their handicap down.
No. Nope. The way that golfers get to scratch is understanding the BASICS of the game and the BASICS of the grip and the BASICS of the swing, the tips included in this video, which most experienced golfers already know, some semi regular practice and at least some semi regular play, and natural, very excellent hand eye coordination that exceeds the hand eye coordination of about 95 percent or more of the rest of the other golfers. If hours and hours of practice was all it took, then there would be a lot higher percentage of golfers that were scratch golfers or 1,2, 3, or 4 handicappers, and even those low handicappers are relatively low in number and frequency. Hours and hours of practice might get you a couple or a few less really bad shots per round, but at best it is not going to improve most golfers scores by more than a few shots, maybe a ten percent reduction at the very most, except in the case of brand new golfers, or a very rare individual. How many golfers have you ever seen get significantly better at golf after they have already been playing the game for five years or more? Give the low handicappers and scratch golfers their full credit. They are strong enough to swing fast enough with enough precision to hit the ball far enough and straight enough to make a lot of pars and some birdies as well while minimizing the number of bogeys or worse. Oh, and they have excellent hand eye coordination on their short game chips and pitches too. And by the way they are also excellent putters with great distance control and directional accuracy. You don’t get all those skills and strength and accuracy and precision just by practicing. But I hope most golfers enjoy practicing even if it won’t make them a significantly better golfer.

If you can play 20 odd times a year and play off scratch you're insanely talented. Practice isn't all it takes, there's all the things you listed, but it's necessary to get to scratch.
Great vid, but I wish more videos use a shot tracker
In my golf club the only scratch golfer had a backside like a handball alley, yup, everyone steered well clear of her in the bar where she also played off scratch !!

this video is great and you're a fantastic instructor. however, i am very skeptical that scratch golfers make 94% of 6 foot putts. i don't doubt that's the data you were given but they lie then.
tour pros struggle to make 90% at 6 feet. yes their conditions are harder but their greens are more true and they have better caddies/reads. i don't believe that part!!
Yes seems high but it is for inside 6ft so 5ft and under. 1-3ft will be pretty close to 100% so it will make the overall percentage seem higher.
I need to rewatch this before every round
From 6’ out I’m about 80% one day and 5% the next. Scratch will never be me. But I’ll never stop trying to get there.
Drive pitch putt ... I'm going out just now with a 64 a 50 and a 38 lemur with a 3f for the long haul
Handicap is potential
smart golf
1. Ball compression
2. Knows their miss
3. Knows what causes their miss
What I don’t get is when golfers ask others about what club they’re using… like if we are all the same golfer… they should shift the conversation on yardage instead..
Eh, I only ask that if the other person hits it similar to me. If they’re longer/shorter, I just use rangefinder and pick my club based on that.
I know my golf buddies yardages just as well as my own, so using their result gives me more info.
Conversation..I ask my wife out of interest not to replicate...mostly down to shot shape rather than distance.
I know. That’s ridiculous. Their irons might be as much as 6 degrees stronger or weaker lofted than the other person’s iron also. That’s a club and a half difference and a lot of yards difference too. How do they expect to “adjust” for that discrepancy too?
94% from six feet? Where did you get that data? Inside six feet might be closer to that number because most putts holed are from 1-2 feet and they are holed almost 100%.
From inside 6ft, so 1-5ft. 100% from 1-2feet will drag the data up yes.
I’m a 1 handicap and getting to zero is extremely difficult.
ur just bad
Great video! Just subscribed 😊
Thanks!!
Is Shot Scope data a publicly available database?
Not the whole database but the app does let you compare all your different stats against loads of different handicap brackets
So hit it further and putt better. got it. easy!
as a scratch golfer, you have to drop your ego, Plain & simple. Stick to the fundamentals and miss smart.
"Scratch golfer hole out from 6 feet 94% of the time" Who are these scratch golfers and why are they not on tour as the PGA tour average from 6 foot is about 2/3. It may very well be what people insert in their data but it is clearly not the case in reality, as the best players in the world make 2/3 putts from this distance. It is wildly misleading saying that it is what scratch golfers' hole from this distance.
From inside 6ft, so 1-5ft. 100% from 1-2feet will drag the data up and also it is self reported but that is just what the data set I have says. It is hard to accurate amateur data as it is all self reported. but yes 94% from 6 foot would be insane.
What’s with all the hand shaking?
I play scratch golf I scratch my head every time I hit a shot 😮
🤣 don’t we all
Scratch golfers only hit 50% of greens and fairways. Scrambling 50% and average 31 putts a round. Remember a scratch golfer is still 12 shots worse than the best golfer in the world. Scratch golfers only average 5 over on a easy 6500 yard course. Under WHS their are mire scratch golfers now than there was 2 handicappers under congu. I’m off scratch and if I played Rory on a major course 7500 yards I’d want a lot more than 12 shots a round head start.
Great video, but please no requirement for the pop music in the background... annoying. Cheers ...
A bit tough to follow. Summarize your points to make at the beginning of the video and put them on the screen.
Just need to get rid of this awful shank shot i have and ill be scratch.
Practice with a shoe box on the floor at the toe side of your golf ball, to hit the ball you have to keep the club inside the box and you can’t physically shank it then if you miss the box
If I could put better I would be about a 5 handicap right now I'm at a 10
Let me add to this one thing in particular. Low handicappers are there to play and focus on golf, not swill beer for 4 hours.
true 🤣
golf is a bit like music, you have the gift or you don't. there are people who can spend years learning piano lessons without ever becoming a virtuoso, but fortunately that does not prevent them from finding pleasure in it. it's exactly the same in golf. in general when you play regularly after 4 or 5 years you get your final handicap. if you are 24 after 4 years then you will stay for a very long time with more or less this handicap. on the other hand, some can be single digit in two years.
Your video is very interesting and everything you say is very clever.
Thank you
I would say this is only true if you don't have golf lessons, you can make huge improvements from good coaching. Nearly all skills can be learnt
@@hannahholdenNCG if you read me correctly I was talking about people taking lessons during 4 years . If you can’t make any better than 24 handicap after 4 years of lessons then there is a big chance that you’ll never be better no matter how many lessons you take. You don’t have this natural gift. I also said it doesn’t matter as long as you still enjoy playing.
I want to be a better gopher so I can lower my scars!
What scratch golfers do that you dont? practice....practice....practice....play....play....play....practice....play....practice...practice....practice some more....play some more....practice even more........
