- When Ellen popped into the SugarMamma HQ, she caused a wave of excitement and serious inspiration for everyone that was listening to her story....including me.
So it is a huge honour to introduce everyone to Ellen. Ellen saved $10,000 from doing The $1,000 Project....yes $10,000 and she was 17 at the time and a student...what an amazing accomplishment.
But doing The $1,000 Project didn't just help her save money, it also changed and improved the way that she treated money, looked at her financial future and respected money. She is now aware of the amazing opportunities which are well within her reach for her financial future.
I was so blown away but this girl, and she is incredibly sweet and humble. So I hope that seeing what this girl achieves, makes you realise what you can do for yourself and your financial future. Remember The $1,000 Project is not just about saving and making money, it is a deep transformation and journey, which I would love you to be a part of with me.

Ellen Kinmont what you have achieved is so inspiring! My son is 6 and is doing $5 challenges by doing jobs for people in the family. I'm going to show him this video :)
Well done...you have inspired me
Good job Ellen :) Keep it up! xoxo
you are so inspiring!! congrats on your achivement and keep going! I might try it for real this time ;)
Ellen Kinmont Well done Ellen..! I am a big fan of Canna and the thousand dollar project. When you get started it becomes like a drug you just want to do more and more. I am totally addicted. You got a good head on your shoulders and now that you are a saver. You will go far. Stay focused stick to your goal. A positive mental attitude is key..! xx
I'm blown away and what a great example for the young generation! This video should be shown in school to motivate young people saving $$.
i definitely agree! so important to start young :)
I’m in grade 6 and we learnt a little bit about businesses and a little about budgeting. I already knew about it as I’ve already been earning and budgeting since I was 5 years old. I wish they would teach us about difference currency - that would be fun as!
This video is a breath of fresh air, when most youtubers of her age are all about consumerism these days~
im 21 and just finished my first year at university , im so inspired!!
That's so fantastic! Nice one Ellen! I've been saving like crazy where possible by eating out less (home cooking + meal prepping a lot), never buying soft drinks or coffee or water bottles when I'm out and this inspires me to keep going strong. You really do get on a roll after a while (when saving) and you get a rush the more you save. But now it's time for me to sell some stuff!
this beautiful girl is going places! 👏
I love your videos. Since I found you through Chloe's video i've also saved $10,000. Hoping to save enough for a deposit too. Thank you for your inspirational videos.
It's so great to see, that someone like a student can save so much money! This really inspires me to do more for my finances, even though I'm doing quite good with the little I have.
i agree! I am already fairly good with saving money, but this makes me want to work even harder!
This is so cool, good job Ellen! And thank you Canna for showing her and her story in your video! :)
loved this video! :)
Thanks so much for this video, ladies! It's really easy to think that it's impossible to do something like this if you're a student or a single Mum so this really proves that you can find a way if you are determined and spend the time & effort on finding new sources of income. I love how Ellen adjusted it to $100 project and gave herself a push when money slowed down. So inspiring!
what an amazing young woman she is!! so inspiring, intelligent and wise!
I am in the same boat, full time student, working 9 hours a week, and I am using petsitting as a secondary cash flow. It's so inspiring to see a fellow student succeeding in their financial goals! Congratulations!
This young lady is such an inspiration
Greetings from Port Elizabeth, South Africa
So impressive and admirable! Sometimes all it takes is a small goal amount to get the ball rolling. Thank you Canna, for inspiring so many people to save & invest for their future!
Love this! Go Ellen! Attitude definitely makes a difference with any kind of money saving project. I'm about to turn 22 and I remember towards the end of high school and start of uni, I was saving for a car, but I was thinking about money in a really negative way. It felt like it was taking me SO long to save up my goal amount (10k)... I was annoyed because everyone around me already had cars! When I finally bought mine I was SO happy that I did it all by myself... with the pressure gone I started thinking about money positively again and was able to save up 15k in the 18 months since. I also chose to start my own business (freelancing PR/marketing/comms) straight of uni, so it's really great to hear the perspective of someone a little younger with a different lifestyle to the typical 9-5er. Would love to see more videos like this :)
What a smart young lady, keep learning and listening to the right people like Sugar Mamma you`ll go far well done!
Well done to Sugar Mamma for inspiring this sharp young lady.
So proud of her.
Hi Canna, I feel every time I watch your videos I just want to send a big thank you to you for giving us your time and education!! I have learnt so much! Thank you! xx
LOve that passion about money! Financial Education is a powefull weapon for your future ;) Go girl! Thanks for this video girls!
wow this is very big accomplishments. Very inspiring and hope that I can be that way too! thanks for sharing.
dammmnnn props girl!!! that's an amazing accomplishment!
Sounds very exciting! I already have ideas on what to do and cannot wait to start!!
How awesome! Well done Ellen!
well done darling 🙋
Wow! This is amazing. Congratulations Ellen!!
Tina Harrington I know! I am so proud of her! xCC.
As a 22 year old this is so inspirational! Did Ellen invest that $10,000 or keep it in a separate account?
Hi Dayna! I've locked it away in a higher interest savings account at this stage!
That's amazing! Keep it up! Do you mind if I ask if you do consult a financial advisor? I have been up in the air as to if I should make the investment in seeking financial advice....
Dayna Norcliffe I believe that it is sitting in a savings account as she would like to buy a property one day xCC
No I don't at this stage - I don't have too many expenses so I'm just handling it myself. I definitely watch a lot of Canna's videos though and update my budget daily!
that's great Ellen! I do the exact same although I am finding at this age that I have many expenses (e.g. house, HECS) that I want to save up for or pay off. Cana is there an initial consultation fee for getting some financial advice from you?
Thank you for the inspiration! I never thought of doing this before, and I don't know why; I have a little in my savings right now, to start me off, now I'm excited about this! Thank you so much for an awesome idea 😊🤗
Amazing. So cool. Head smart. I was not at that age. Good work.
Really enjoying your videos, giving me inspiration to stop spending!! 😊👍🏼
Energy produces energy, the story of Ellen is very inspiring, only at 17 years old. Bravo. We just want to follow her example.
Énergie produit de l'énergie, à seulement 17 ans quelle Volonté, la tête sur les épaules. C'est très inspirante l'histoire de Ellen, On a envie de suivre son exemple.
ChaoVansayaB so true! Even the other girls in the office were so moved by Ellen's accomplishments...such a clever girl and a great future ahead of her! xCC
Amazing. I love videos like these! How inspiring!
Wow! Well done Ellen. So inspiring!
love videos like these! they motivate me so much! :)
Great video 😍🙌🏼 well done!
I absolutely love the videos youve made showing others whove done the project! Can you do more of these?!?!
Amazing work Ellen!!! Your motivation is inspiring :)
What a great story! You too even look alike I think :)
This video is just what I wanted to hear💪
Very inspirational!! You inspire me a lot Canna and to know how others do it too makes it seem really achievable.
I just lost my job and still have debts to pay. I believe that paying off all debts will be ideal but i dont have enough savings to do it. How do i strike a balance between saving something for rainy days and paying off my debts?
so true! love seeing real life examples :)
Once I get a car I'll be doing this as well! Only since now I need to buy a car quite seriously. I always beg people for work but right now even adults are trying to find side jobs or jobs in general like babysitting and nannying so it's a bit difficult to find jobs like those like walking dogs when poverty and such is so rampant. Being a millennial, etc. is difficult. I want to save 20k by the age of 21 which will be in 2019!! This is a realistic goal for me so I'm hoping I can :) or at least 10-15k
Way to go!!! She's on the path to success :-) Canna, can you talk about how you keep from spending the money before you invest it? Also where do you keep it saved up until you reach $1000?
Very encouraging. If she could do it,why can't I as well😊. Thanks
Wow. Inspiring!
Fantastic!
This is so inspiring,I totally wanna try it! I get paid monthly tho,and I only earn about £1100....before rent and bills it seems impossible!
That is okay, you can do The $100 Project...it is all about having a good and discovering how powerful and capable you are...xCC
Sugar Mamma aww thanks for replying Love,I'm a new sub and hooked on your content!
£100 project totally sounds do-able!
I'm looking at investing,I know zero about it so I'm learning everything from your channel!
Also please may I just say,you are drop dead gorgeous! ❤
Welcome to my channel! Definitely check out my Money Monday Playlist! Heaps to learn about investing! xCC
I used to earn exactly the same at the beginning of 2018! But I still managed to keep on saving at least £200! I also live in London so rent is very high + the transport cost is a killer!
Then I changed the job on commission based sales and in December I managed to save up over £2000! I set myself the goal by the end of 2018 to save £10.000 and I’ve achieved this! Now I am determined to save up £20.000 in 2019 and looking for ways to make passive income from some of that £10.000 😊 and I still went on 5 vacations as well. But I’m planning to cut down on that as I want to save more haha
This is inspiring!
She is amazing!
I am missing something... how did the $1,000 project become $10,000? She said she started doing a $100 because she couldn’t do the $1,000 project?
Very inspiring :)
Smart girl..
Yes she is!!
Great video ladies, lots of inspiration so thank you. Ellen in the Daily Mail article you talk about shopping at a certain clothing store instead of going for fast fashion - can you share which store it is? I'm moving away from cheap clothing but I don't know what the better stores are. Ta :)
Jeanswest! I've found they have great quality and great sales too - all my clothes from there have lasted so well!
Ellen Kinmont thank you! I have bought a few items from them and they seem to be pretty good quality and I agree they have great sales.
This is so inspiring!
joantheunseen I know! She is incredible! Amazing future for this clever young lady. I am so proud of her xCC
Is investing done the same way in the United States as it is in Australia? I love your videos, but don't know if the information in them would work for me.
I'm confused about how much tax I will pay on dividends on Australian Industrial shares ... if my income is over the 87k mark will i be losing 1/3 of the dividends in tax and if so is there any way to reduce that?
Love this video! Such an inspiration
Just a question for Ellen, did you really try to reduce your spending whilst you were doing this challenge?
cazzl26 Absolutely! I did Canna's financial fast in February which basically cut out all spending! I never spend money on food at uni and I follow a pretty minimalistic approach to clothes, makeup and books etc. in my everyday life which saves heaps!
damn how much did you charge for tutoring and babysitting?!
I love that accent on girls
I discovered Canna on Chloe Morello's channel as well :)
Wish I was in the mindset I am in now and on my grind at that young age.
I should have worked all those student jobs in my holidays and pay no taxes. Oh well.
Never give up! It is amazing what you can achieve when you put your mind to it! xCC
Is this student in high school, and does not have to pay tuition? I think it's great that she's been able to manifest such a large amount of money(through discipline, motivation, and yes, a lot of hard work!)but unfortunately, in my country, there is not a student alive who is not racking up (or about to rack up when college begins) DEBT--let alone saving! How does Australia handle college tuition, anyway? Here students pay at least $25 K in comprehensive fees/room & board/tuition for public universities, and up around $70 K for private. It's no wonder that these poor students (and their poorer parents--like me!) can't save a dime...If we opt out of college altogether, in order to save the cost of attendance, it is impossible to find work. It's a lose-lose, and my country has forced families to take on $1.5 TRILLION in student loan debt. Yes...higher than the nation's credit card debt. Sad, isn't it?
I'm 21 years old I save up to $30000 is that ok?
Are you gonna start a new $1000 project? Can I join from the US?
GOD has your back not the universe....
Did she get to 1000 project then invest that to get the 10 grand... Or did she literally just save 10,000? I'm confused! Like how is that even possible 😩 I'd literally never be able to do that in a million years! Don't get it!
I never thought I could do it either! But I started with no savings and did the $1000 project (but $100 in my case) and gradually increased to the $500 project - I modified Canna's awesome idea to suit my smaller goals but it really does add up!
Ellen Kinmont so when you got to 500 did you invest it to get to the 10,000? That's what I'm confused about. Or did you just save up lots of 500s which then added up to the 10? Lol sorry I'm not hating or anything just genuinely confused and intrigued! :) I think it's amazing! I just don't know how I could ever do it myself :( x
I saved up lots of $100 and $500 parcels to get to the $10 000 :)
Ellen Kinmont oh ok! Thank you! That's amazing! Well done! 😲 I don know how I would do it! It would take me forever! Haha I don't even have anything worth selling and I don't have enough spare cash to put that much away or enough spare time to do extra work! Do you have any other tips? X
Jojo Wood I stopped buying food regularly and meal prepped all my lunches for uni which saved a ton of money! I also did Canna's financial fast idea which helped heaps and am pretty minimal with the clothes and makeup that I choose to buy. So a lot of it was choosing not to spend as well as earning extra cash!
I’m 16 and I’m inspired! Hope I can do the same!
Ummm pretty simple, live simple and put away 60-70% of your income.
Hi Sugar Mamma, do you manage investments for people? If I give you $10,000, can you invest the money for me in shares? I'm uncertain as to whether this is a service that you provide.
