How to Become an Airline Pilot in India

I graduated from IIT Kharagpur as a Civil Engineer and then decided to pursue my dream of becoming a Pilot. Its never too late. So here are the steps for you to follow your dreams and get your wings.
How To Become An Airline Pilot In India
STEP 01- You need to have physics and Maths in your class 12th. If you don’t then you have to give physics (for commerce) or Maths(for biology students) from open School.
Get your mark sheets verified (both 10th and 12th ) by your respective Boards. Ask them to send it directly to DGCA.
English is an requirement for aviation. All the studies are in English, plus you also need an ELP certificate (English language proficiency). Don’t worry about this now. This will be taken care by your Employer in the Future.
STEP 02- Get your Class II medical done.
List of class 2 medical doctors can be found at dgca.nic.in/med...
You have to send your class 2 medical reports to DGCA and they will generate your File no. On the basis of that. File no. Is your identification in DGCA. You will need this life long in your career. All your records are maintained by DGCA through this File no.
STEP 03- Apply for Class 01 Medical
On the basis of your class 2 medical and File no. You can apply for Class 1 medical
Rules regarding Class 1 Medical and Class 1 Medical centres can be found at. dgca.nic.in/med...
STEP 04 - Apply for Computer no.
In order to apply for Exams, you need a computer no by CEO (central examination Organisation). This no remains with you through out your career and all communication with CEO requires this no.

You will also find all the documents required on this website.
Form for application- dgca.nic.in/for...
STEP 05- Apply for police verification.
You need a police verification certificate before you can commence your flying. This has to be done via Commissioner office of that particular city/area. This Process may take some time.
STEP 06- Apply for DGCA Exams.
After getting computer number, apply for DGCA exams through CEO. udaan.nic.in:80...
You need to pay nominal fee for the exams. The validity of the papers, once cleared is 5 years. Meaning, you have to complete your all flying and submit all the docs including the exam results within that duration. If you fail to do so, you will have to clear all the exams again.
People flying from India have to clear- (books mentioned in the bracket)
Aviation Meterology- (Oxford or From the ground up)
Air Regulations (RK Bali)
Air Navigation (Oxford)
Technical Specific (Single engine and multi engine)
Technical General
All other books- dgca.nic.in/lic...
People Flying from Abroad only have to clear the first 3 exams. Also Navigation and Met are combined into one exam, called composite. Although , I gave all three separate. You can do whatever suits you.

STEP 07- Clear WPC RTR (A) and get a license. You will apply for FRTOL licence in DGCA on the basis of RTR (A) license issued by ministry of telecommunications. Head Office Sanchar Bhavan. These exams are conducted in one city at a time.
This consists of 2 parts (Part 1 and part 2). Some people get RTR from Canada/UK or some other commonwealth countries. They need to only appear for part 1 of the exam. But they have to do this process every 5 years.
If you clear Indian RTR(A), its validity is lifetime.
FRTOL is issued by DGCA after completion of 10 hrs of flying.(only consider this if, flying in India)

STEP 08- All of you must be waiting for this part. Well This is the most interesting part.

Collect all paperwork.Fill all forms. Submit to DGCA with fees (DD required)

It's really heart breaking to know that you need to have around 2 crores in your bank account. These jobs are not for middle class people.

There is something know as student loan and it doesn't take 2 cores to be a pilot

1. I can't disclose the exact name of My flying school but it is in india and is DGCA approved.
2. It takes 200 hours for your commercial pilot license( cpl). Flying 1 hour will cost you Indian rupees(inr) 12000. So the total cost of flying 200 hours would be between 25-40 lacs in india. Moreover you need a multi/single engine rating as well as instrument rating which the flying school will provide you after your cpl completion. These ratings will cost you INR 5 lacs. So the total cost of CPL with multi engine and instrument rating is 30 lacs in the cheapest flying school in india.
2. Type rating is a course in which you will be trained on a specific aircraft like an AIRBUS a320, BOEING 737, Atr, etc... Type rating will cost you around 15-30 lacs. I would recommend you to do type rating from a reputed and known institute since if you fail your Simulator test then the airlines will ask you to redo type rating which will double your costs.
3. After type rating you apply for a job for the aircraft you have type rated on. If you get hired then the airlines will send you for airline training which will cost another 10 lacs.
4. The total cost may vary between 65-80 lacs.
5. Talking about air india and jet airways...These airlines have order of bigger planes such as boeing 787 or the Airbus a380. For flying such planes you need atleast 3000 flying hours on type.
6. Every year 800 CPL holders get inside the market but only 40-50 pilots jobs are available in a very good year. For eg: cadets who applied for jet airways in 2012 got hired in 2016. Similarly cadets of 2005 got hired till 2010-11.
7. Pilot shortage is a myth. There is a shortage of commanders that is CAPTAINS. There are 8000+ jobless cpl holders in india. My colleagues who mortgaged their houses for the LOAN they took ( nearly 70-80 lacs) couldn't repay the loan and the bank auctioned their houses. Most of the pilots get jobs after 5 6 years. The interest on the principal amount makes the loan amount twice..sometimes approx 2 crores. Right now it's been 3 years and my father is paying off my debt..I feel very sad and powerless and regret my career choice
If we complete cpl my cadet pilot program then the company hires you immediately after your training

@@Aryash2002 okay first of all I am not a cadet. Now where I have mentioned that I am cadet.
2. Cadet programme provides you with LOI (letter of intent) at the beginning of your course itself so you don't need to worry about it.
3. But remeber cadet program costs between 1cr-1.5 cr..never ever go for loan in cadet pilot program as the interest rates will kill you..you will end up paying 2 crores instead of 1.5 if you go for 90 95% loan
@@Aryash2002 people need to be aware of the decision they going to make. 60 70 lakhs is not a small amount for most of the people in india. Students convince their parents, take loans, mortgage their houses…and then sit home idle looking at their parents paying off their debt..and I know I am a failure…this industry made me a failure..do you know the story of anurag mishra? Son of a farmer who forced his father to sell his land and also took a loan for his cpl? Now he's sitting jobless for 7 years..he went on for a hunger strike in Gurgaon 2 years back. Imagine if he was aware what step he is taking..what would had been the consequences?

According to me, best way is to become a commercial pilot is crack ssb, clear PABT or CPSS nowadays and get into flying branch of IAF. Then it is way too easy to get into commercial airlines as IAF pilots are very high in demand both in domestic as well as international airlines.

Student loan perhaps? Pilot jobs pay like 2-6lakhs per month if you are a captain or first officer(watched in some youtube video) so I guess u can pay it off.
Late disclaimer: I am not a pilot.
Some airlines offer aviation programs where if you perform well and part of their program then the airline company will take care all of your expenses from your course to training and training to your commercial license and after all this, you joined them as pilot.
That's the only way to succeed if you're middle class. In simple words, thats scholarship of aviation course.
