Nice one man, I definitely have Mac envy. 😉 For that price it makes sense to go with the iMac, there's nothing like being able to just hook up one power cable and you're off and running. The new Mac Pro is amazing, because of the upgradability, but that iMac Pro is going to last you a LONG time!
repairs outside of warranty are going to cost an arm and a leg, that's if apple even wants to repair it, as they have refused others, no internal hard drive upgrades, brick-able t2 chip, thermal throttling, and a glossy screen, many do not want.
Glad you’re happy with your purchase! My own experience: While it’s true the iMac Pro is a really powerful system, it’s also important to remember that all-in-one systems come with a lot of baggage. I own 2 iMac Pro’s and both share the same manufacturing issues (screen dust, warped keyboard, fan noise higher than when bought) and some other annoying issues like non upgrade able SSDs. All issues that stem from a limiting all in on design. If I had to pick now, I’d go for the Mac Pro without skipping a beat! It’s ridiculously expensive but it’s also extremely upgradeable and easier to service.
Dude I’ve been watching you for a while now, and you’re one of the few genuine apple youtubers left. You highly inspire me, as someone who works in IT, and collects Apple products. Basically, thanks for being you bro. You’re awesome.
Now you can get this same Mac for $1800 if you win a auction on eBay (very likely) or pay $2700 probably less honestly. True this was 3 years ago but still. Today as of writing this 1/29/24
I work everyday with the iMac Pro for video editing and 3D modeling, already payed itself. It’s a powerful and very reliable workstation, totally satisfied with it.
Your community timer post was brilliant, you should do it more often. As for the iMac Pro, after seeing the Mac Pro’s pricing, I’m sure that if I ever need a desktop Mac, it’ll be an iMac. The fact that it has a 5K display built in is great. I just bought an LG 5K for my MacBook, but its chassis looks terrible compared to my old Thunderbolt Display.
I think as far as pricing goes it very much depends on where you live in the world. I know here in the UK most macs, be it Mac Pro, iMac, MacBook or whatever, tends to be more expensive generally, especially when you go up against prices in the US. Any great video, as usual, keep it up!!
I found one of these locally and just sent the seller a list of questions. I don't need the power but really like all of the ports, speakers, video, etc.
Glad you’re happy with your purchase and yes it’s a lot ($5500), however if you do a lot of editing in 4K then why not!! I use my MacBook for Logic Pro so don’t need such a hefty machine, but a good i7 would be good for me.. still looking though for my “perfect “ iMac. 🤣 Great vids keep it up bro!!!
Good video. Great find on that iMac Pro. In fact this video revolves around that one of a kind find. This is like me finding a re,brant at a garage sale then telling everyone that garage sales are totally worth their time.
I love this channel because you are great at purchasing Macs off of eBay and scoring amazing deals and you make it look so easy while doing it lol. I go on there and look around and I just find a 12 inch 2015 MacBook Retina that had gotten ran over by 20 bulldozers and has water damage some how and it costs $450 lol. Oh well. Keep it up Mr. Miani!
All of your videos are outstanding. These subjects you cover go through my head every. You solve them. Then I make videos about guitar. Still saving money for my next purchase. :)
People always say that they can build a PC with 100x better than an IMac with the same price but they usually don't add $1,300 of the LG 5K display =))))
Hell of a deal for a powerful official mac...Though yeah, the design at this point looks very first gen iPad, since this design launched closer to then than to now! Time for an update, hopefully shave the whole footprint down, or else borrow from the XDR's form factor.
Mouthwatering, that iMac Pro. And an entertaining video, as usual. Thank you for all those great posts Mr Miani! I will be using your advice when buying my next secondhand Mac. eBay listings in the EU are slightly higher priced though, and the many different keyboard layouts you get when scanning eBay here is another problem. Keep up the good work!
You are exactly right about the Mac Pro being a machine that you buy and keep for a long time. The fact that it is modular is what makes it. You buy the base model Mac Pro and upgrade everything over time. Upgrades on the iMac Pro are limited by comparison. This is what you are buying a Mac Pro for. Upgradeability. I agree though that for what you do as a RUclipsr the iMac Pro will meet and exceed your needs.
Honestly when you compare the i9 iMac that you have to the 18 core iMac Pro. I think this highlights how much value the i9 iMac is. Because at MSRP prices you had a machine that was 2/3s the performance for 1/3 the price compared to the 10,000 USD asking price for the config that you have. Now the fact that you got it for 5,500USD is a steal all the way around. I think that the i9 iMac still put up a really good showing in those benchmarks that you ran.
Damn. I use my iMac 27 2019 only for gaming. And I have been looking for a good deal of iMac pro with Vega 64 or 64x. Your deal is no doubt a great deal by far. Hoping I could get mine next time 😅
imac pro is pretty much a server. Your getting multi-core and crazy amount of memory support thats upgradable and its all ECC. It's a server masquerading as a all-in-one desktop. I'm def going to be upgrading to iMac Pro myself. I've been using a spec'ed out iMac 2013 with a nvidia 2gb GPU and luv it to bits. Never failed me over the years and still runs good. Just I feel it's getting outdated so will change soon.
The maxed out 14000 USD iMac pro is really something (18 cores, 256 gb of memory, and 4TB of SSD storage!), the standard of home computers will take 20 years to reach that level and yet you could get one for under 6000 on ebay right now.
Is always good to have a quiet machine, but if needed I would like to have the option between a quiet but not so powerful machine or a little noisy but powerful machine. It’s just a software setting and it would be great to have this option.
I'm a Windows/Android guy but you're quickly becoming my favorite RUclipsr. So much so I might even buy a 2013 MB Pro 😮. BTW, when are you switching over to Geekbench 5?
I remember a very hot summer in the advertising agency when the client was waiting for the project, we were late and 3 imacs crushed while converting a huge pdf file and the mac pro did it with flying colors - usually there was no difference in performance but on that hot summer day I saw the difference - the Imac couldn't cut it when it was too hot, thats why - given a choice I would pick the mac pro anyway
Great video man! Im loving this imac videos. i have a 13 inch 2019 base model for photo editing since i travel and i need a laptop for school but one day ill buy an imac :D
Wish you would do something with a Mac Mini. I have upgraded several and think they are a great option for Apple fans who want something affordable. But love your content and congrats on reaching 100k!!
Great find Luke! This confirms my thinking of what my next high end Mac will be. The Mac Pro, that I currently use is a powerhouse for 1080/4k editing. Could I use a faster computer? Sure. And one day I will upgrade. Till then Mac Pro from 2010 it is. More than enough performance for now. Oh and Macs Fan Control is a great software choice for helping with temps. I am doing a few videos about this software myself. (:
Great review. I have the same 18 core but payed full price last year. I focus on 3d re deudor print a s it is indeed a beast. The 5k monitor make a huge difference vs my previous Apple monitor. It is very important for people to know how important it is to have a monitor this sharp, specially if you focus is on graphics and color.
People get carried away with the price of these machines. This is primarily a high end primary workstation that will work for a living. Now compare this to other businesses. A work truck could be anything from $10-30k. Buy a new backhoe or an excavator and you're starting at tens of thousands of dollars. Buy a lathe and you're talking thousands of dollars. I renovated houses for a few years and even my cheaper tools probably cost $10k by the time I finished. A little dump trailer behind a pickup can easily cost $5k. Wanna go into trucking, a semi will cost you 6 figures. And don't ever look at price of real estate if the price of a Mac keeps you awake. You'll spend more on your car, and spend less time with it than you will this Mac. So are these machines really that expensive? Or are nerds just tight?
Your workspace looks comfortable. I have just realized that maintaining a clean workspace is essential to enhance productivity. Most of the Apple products are wireless and has very clean interface, it would be hard to build a PC ourselves that are as neat as the Apple products.
To find the best deals, I never use the parameters. Lots of great deals are listed wrong, so if you use the parameter iMac Pro, you will miss out some of the great deals. I search for Imac Pro in the searchfield and I will get a ton of results. Most of them for no use at all,- but in that haystack there are all the fine deals no one else see, because the use the search parameters. Helped me many times. Just a tip. Love your videos. Thanks.
Great review! Perfect "burn" of the "I can build it cheaper" crowd. You're too young to know, but the "I can build it cheaper" argument dates back to the dawn of the IBM-compatible PC in the early/mid-1980s. At that time, IBMs were extremely expensive ($2,000 minimum and usually closer to $3,000 in 1980s dollars). Compaq was a little cheaper but of course you could "build your own" for less money still. Dell came along and undercut everyone with their (pre-internet) e-commerce build-to-order strategy. But it's _ALWAYS_ been the case, since the beginning of time, that anyone can buy a bunch of components and simulate something like this iMac Pro. Of course, doing this is essentially valuing one's own time and effort at $0.00 per hour. Personally, my time is more valuable than that. Further, for me, something like AirDrop is a priceless time-saving tool, but one that rarely functions correctly in a Hackintosh build-- so the "I can build it crowd" is essentially only measuring a "0-60" benchmark as proof they can "build it better", when, in fact, a computer system, as a productivity tool, is much more than a single raw CPU performance number.
I don’t have a problem with most Apple price tags, I just wished they had a modular computer starting $1500-2500. I can live with a laptop that is not repairable by the consumer but Apple should offer a consumer grade pc that can be upgraded like the pro.
When you think about it, a base model mac pro + xdr display is about 11000 so you could in theory get a lot of upgrades for the imac pro at the same price
I know it’s been way over a year but in mid 2023 you can get a maxed out iMac Pro for $2500 so you would not be using that for free. Granted if you actually used it daily since you bought it the extracted utility would be very much worth it.
So I might have the same luck as Luke. I’m getting a replacement for my 2016 mbp and they’re replacing it with 13-inch MacBook Pro - Space Gray 2.8GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.7GHz Retina display with True Tone Touch Bar and Touch ID Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory 512GB SSD storage Four Thunderbolt 3 ports Backlit Keyboard - US English
My pc (built by me) has a Ryzen 9 5950X, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra, 64GB of 3600mhz Trident Z royal memory, rog strip X570 mobo, 1TB NVME 4.0 ssd, 8TB HGST Ultrastar drive. With a 4K 144hz IPS monitor. Price total (4500 USD) I think is beats the iMac… yay
Silly question, what do you do with all these machines you buy? Do you re-sell them? Hoard them? Return them? Would love to know. Your ad rev must be awesome considering how much money you're spending!
That r20 score really isnt bad considering the power budget and thermal constraints of that case only a around 2k less points of my 1950x encoding box and that is liquid cooled with a 360 rad. Although my 3950x can get over 10k in r20 but yeah i could put together a probably 24 or 32 core threadripper together for around that price. I do get why you like this imac pro tho its not a terrible deal in any way.
For stuff like rendering they should make different fan curves the user can choose between and let them switch like windows power plans? That would be the best of both worlds. Like a super quiet, quiet (current), and performance mode. In super quiet I’d like to see thermal throttling before kicking up the fan speed. Useful as a movie watching mode or something. But since its already really quiet it’s not necessary but could be nice for like macbooks
Dude that’s awesome. Nice score, still a little rich for my blood. But you and I think very much alike, with search parameters and eBay protection, let the babies miss out.
Oh and for me, the Mac Pro is fantastic, but i credibly expensive and is aimed at heavy duty pros, iMac Pro is still very powerful and expensive, but the maxed out version is a fourth of the maxed out Mac Pro excluding monitor, and it looks nice.
2 12 core original Mac Pro's networked by 10GB ethernet pcie cards, would be even faster and allow for much more expansion and upgrades, no t2 chip and much easier to repair, for under $2000.
is the imac pro still worth getting? cant wait any longer for a redesign, sucks. looking at bare bones base model. mainly dovideo editing with final cut
First of all, congrats on getting such a sweet deal. I am envious. In a good way. Fantastic machine you got there. Now, out of curiosity I did run some benchmarks to see how my PC compared at least in these tests. This is for fun. As expected the CPU based ones were lower than your 18 core. Surprisingly though the GPU based ones were higher than your Vega. Then again I don't know that much about AMD GPU so, yeah. Cinebench R20 3242 gkb4 cpu single 4053 multicore 25685 gkb4 opencl gtx 970 107209 heaven fps 105.1 score 2648 min 27.4 max 221.9 valley: fps 106.1 score 4437 min fps 30.6 max fps 194 My PC is a 5 year old system, though hardly used till this week, seriously it had less than an hour of usage. It has a i7 5960X at stock speeds, air cooling. A GTX 970 mini (4GB), again no overclocking. 64GB of 2666Mhz DDR4 RAM. Max CPU temp was 61 C I think and max GPU temp at 72 C. Air cooling, nothing special, not loud at all. Anyway, enjoy your new iMac Pro. I would love to have one too. EDIT: I forgot to add the CR20
The mac pro is a really niche market. It really isn't for most people. That base price of $5k is actually doubled once you add the screen (which of course you will need.) The iMac pro makes way more sense for 90% of power users. It is, however unfortunate that you cant even clean the fans on a $3k plus "pro" device without voiding the warranty and risking death (exposed power capacitors.)
Apple used to offer a great product at a good price. The first 8-Core Intel Mac Pro sold for $2799. You could also get a G5 Power Mac for $1499, and before that, the last G4 Power Mac could be had for $1299. Computers were getting cheaper, but Apple decided to "Think Different".
So, $1500 delta for much worse performance, but greater convenience. Fair enough, that’s at least a greatly cheaper upcharge than Apple would give you. However, that system would be even cheaper if you did the same thing you did with this system for each of those components on eBay. Also, if you ran windows and got a 2080ti instead of a Vega64, your system would legitimately run faster in Premiere. My primary problem with iMacs is the lack of multiple monitor support and non nVidia GC, I run 2x 43” 4K, 1x 32” 4K monitors and a 24” Cintque on my primary workstation. The only thing compelling about the Mac Pro is the XDR monitor, everything else I’d rather just have the 3960x system I just built. Great buy for what it’s worth.
Day 28 of trying to get pinned

Further, for me, something like AirDrop is a priceless time-saving tool, but one that rarely functions correctly in a Hackintosh build-- so the "I can build it crowd" is essentially only measuring a "0-60" benchmark as proof they can "build it better", when, in fact, a computer system, as a productivity tool, is much more than a single raw CPU performance number.
Just picked up a 10 core with the vega 64, 64gb ram and 2Tb for £2k it’s pretty awesome
I was looking at your iMac Pro on eBay weighing up the shipping costs, I’m not kidding. Now I know where it went!
Would like to see the new graphics options in the refreshed iMac Pro as well as new processor options for better thermals and clock speeds
That thing is an absolute monster
Luke, nice video, I don't wanna say first one I really enjoyed, but first one which forced me to leave you nice comment :) Good luck man
Peerhaps the whole exterior of the case could be a radiator....for sound deadening....cooling FLUID. The back would feel warm to the touch.
I don’t have a problem with most Apple price tags, I just wished they had a modular computer starting $1500-2500. I can live with a laptop that is not repairable by the consumer but Apple should offer a consumer grade pc that can be upgraded like the pro.
I bought an iMac Pro only for gaming. I can say, that simplicity in that all in one computer is amazing !
you can also get the top of the line trash can that will work just as well
When you think about it, a base model mac pro + xdr display is about 11000 so you could in theory get a lot of upgrades for the imac pro at the same price
I wish the form factor would evolve, something like edge-to-edge screen, better speakers, and also a better face camera.
Great option for those wanting an all in one. But I sold off my iMac Pro and bought the Mac Pro. Glad I did. Congrats on the new machine.
I wish Apple had an option in settings for professionals to be able to select different fan speed/curve options like quiet - normal - max performance
I know it’s been way over a year but in mid 2023 you can get a maxed out iMac Pro for $2500 so you would not be using that for free. Granted if you actually used it daily since you bought it the extracted utility would be very much worth it.
So I might have the same luck as Luke. I’m getting a replacement for my 2016 mbp and they’re replacing it with 13-inch MacBook Pro - Space Gray
2.8GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.7GHz
Retina display with True Tone
Touch Bar and Touch ID
Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655
8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
512GB SSD storage
Four Thunderbolt 3 ports
Backlit Keyboard - US English
My pc (built by me) has a Ryzen 9 5950X, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra, 64GB of 3600mhz Trident Z royal memory, rog strip X570 mobo, 1TB NVME 4.0 ssd, 8TB HGST Ultrastar drive. With a 4K 144hz IPS monitor. Price total (4500 USD) I think is beats the iMac… yay
Luke! Rockin' the stache!
Silly question, what do you do with all these machines you buy? Do you re-sell them? Hoard them? Return them? Would love to know. Your ad rev must be awesome considering how much money you're spending!
I don’t understand why people complain about the style being old. This is a gorgeous looking machine the way it is.
Great find. Insanely better value than the $6,000 Cheesegrater 2.0 with the performance of $2,000 Pee Cee.
Great stuff. How upgradable are these btw? Ram obviously but storage wise (ssd/nvme) etc.
7:30 „So let's evaluate if this makes any sense (...)“
*Google AdSense money rushing in*
That r20 score really isnt bad considering the power budget and thermal constraints of that case only a around 2k less points of my 1950x encoding box and that is liquid cooled with a 360 rad. Although my 3950x can get over 10k in r20 but yeah i could put together a probably 24 or 32 core threadripper together for around that price. I do get why you like this imac pro tho its not a terrible deal in any way.
How much did I like this video? I didn’t even finish it before I went to EBay
That was a great buy! Thanks Luke for making good content.
This dude makes such clean videos.
OMG. I just put the same specs in the Apple store app here in Australia and it comes to $16,128 !!!
Oh and for me, the Mac Pro is fantastic, but i credibly expensive and is aimed at heavy duty pros, iMac Pro is still very powerful and expensive, but the maxed out version is a fourth of the maxed out Mac Pro excluding monitor, and it looks nice.
When will we see a Ubuntu installation video walkthrough on these machines? I'd love to see that to see how well it performs with a pure Linux system.
The screen is a nice bonus too. Really hard to find a good 5k screen like that... and they're like $1000+
2 12 core original Mac Pro's networked by 10GB ethernet pcie cards, would be even faster and allow for much more expansion and upgrades, no t2 chip and much easier to repair, for under $2000.
hey look can i give you my ebay password so you login and bless it with your luck and wisdom?
Can I have it to invest your money?
how much did he pay for it
randomrazr The iMac Pro? $5500 for a $10,000 machine!
AbuBakr Akram Thats almost the bade model
@@abubakrakram6208 i looked up completed listings on ebay i did not see a 18 cr imac pro sold in the past fwe months
10k sell for 5.5k? The seller didn't want money ???
The first thing I ever do on any mac, instal a fan controller and set it myself because apples silent overheating is garbage
is the imac pro still worth getting? cant wait any longer for a redesign, sucks. looking at bare bones base model. mainly dovideo editing with final cut
All these RUclipsrs are getting insane deals on tech products and I'm lucky to find a passive 1050 ti above msrp and used.
Cinebench R20 3242

gkb4 opencl gtx 970 107209

max 221.9

min fps 30.6
max fps 194
My PC is a 5 year old system, though hardly used till this week, seriously it had less than an hour of usage.
Good video
The mac pro is a really niche market. It really isn't for most people. That base price of $5k is actually doubled once you add the screen (which of course you will need.) The iMac pro makes way more sense for 90% of power users. It is, however unfortunate that you cant even clean the fans on a $3k plus "pro" device without voiding the warranty and risking death (exposed power capacitors.)
I don't mind fan noise, honestly I've had a super loud desktop for the longest time cause it has shitty 80mm fans so I haven't been spoiled yet
nice catch Luke, talking about the best bang for the buck!
great breakdown at the end
In the graphics section of the benchmark you should have included benchmarks from the Radeon 580X so we could compare it with the base Mac Pro
