nayomi kawazaki obviously the song’s main theme is heartbreak, the singer’s partner has already started showing some signs, but he didn’t catch them. he can’t help but hope his ex will come back.
however, on a more personal level, i’ve always associated the song with depression. the acknowledging of the fact that you’re no longer the same as before, almost feelingless. mostly, the fact that this “monster” is uncatchable, just like water, once you believe it’s in your hands and you feel you’re controlling it, it just slips away and overwhelms you. it takes different, unpredictable shapes, it can move fast and stay still for decades.
fear of the water, to me, is fear of the cause of depression. which often people fail to acknowledge

i think it’s about a painful breakup. the person in perspective thought everything was alright, but when they break up suddenly, the person realizes maybe it was for the best of both parts, even though it’s painful knowing he was the last to know everything wasn’t fine like he thought it was, so it was very shocking and painful at first because he thought they were made for each other. so the significant other goes away smiling, leaving him broken. so to me him both of them “diving” has different meanings to each of them: one is going away to be happy while the other might be drowning.
i guess this interpretation makes sense to me because my friends broke up recently and since i’m friends with both parts i got to listen to them separately, both perspectives and all. this song seems to fit perfectly.
I think he is agonizing over a break up. The singer cannot seem to accept the truth of it, he is still deeply in love- yet the other individual is not. The person he loves is ending the relationship and they are detached (you're dislocated don't be like that)
Also"And you smile when you dive in, like you're never coming back" he's singing about his departing lover's smile as they dive into the water-- but his own paralyzing fear of it.

To the person who read this,
It’s been hard for you, I know, and it makes me sad that you don’t see yourself in the way I see you. Sometimes they are things in life that cause us to loose ourselves, and the way you have is so unimaginable painful. I miss your smile, the way your eyes light up the whole room just by the sound of your laughter. I miss the way you accepted the way you look in the mirror without cursing yourself out about how ugly you look. I miss the way you didn’t think of yourself as a failure because everyone makes mistakes, we all have flaws and we all aren’t perfect. It’s painful to see that no one around you seems to see the pain trough your eyes, but, stranger, I do, I see how heavy your heart is and how comforting the sadness for you might be, how afraid your heart is of happiness because it disappears in the end, right? You don’t know how much impact you have in this world and it’s sad to see that your demons fight against you and want to take over you. Because you do make change, it’s something so simple and little that brightens up someone’s whole world, it can be a small smile from your lips, the way you look at things you’re passionate about, the way you make yourself eat even though it’s been hard for you lately, the way you zoom out and go in your own world, you brighten up my world by reading this, it means a lot to me that you’re here, existing, but I don’t want you to just exist, you deserve to feel alive. You deserve to get up in the morning and feel good about yourself. You deserve to feel something- to feel every damn second alive in this lifetime. It’s heartbreaking that you think you’re not capable of being loved, because you are, I love you trough all my words and I hope you let it happen in your heart. Love is scary, I know, maybe you heart had been broken once and since then you wanted to be rather numb than feel ever again, it hurts me how you punish yourself, does it not deserve love? Because YOU DO deserve love, please forgive yourself, it’s not your fault that the demons want to take over your beautiful heart. You’re not a bad person for distancing yourself from others, but you deserve someone to talk to, you deserve someone to listen. I am listening, you can tell me what’s wrong. It’s everything, isn’t it? There’s something pulling your heartstrings on the ground and no one seems to understand how misunderstood you feel, it’s heartbreaking to know that I am behind the screen and can’t give you a hug, that’s why I will give you a big warm virtual hug and send you lots of love :). As one of the stars you see others stars, maybe they have felt the same way as you do at some point in there life, but they lighten up the universe with each other’s presence. You’re a star for me, maybe you don’t see it yourself but I can see it, you’re beautiful from inside and out, your body is beautiful the way it is. You make me happy by reading this, you make me feel something by your presence and when you can make me feel that way than you also make other people feel that way about you too. I hope you stay for yourself and don’t let your story get written by others but by yourself, it’s your story not theirs. As you can see, I say a lot of “I hope” because I have hope for you even if you don’t have it for yourself, I see hope in you even though you might want to give up. That’s why I hope you won’t see the world in darkness and will see it colorful again, I hope I will give you a glimpse of hope and make the world you see a bit colorful for today. My favorite color is yellow, and I hope the next time you see the color yellow you will think about my words. If someone left you than don’t blame yourself, don’t think you weren’t enough, don’t lower yourself for someone who couldn’t see the awesomeness in you. If you lost someone I am so sorry for your loss, they want you happy, I hope you don’t feel guilty or regret because you were there, you spend enough time with them, they want you to be happy. They are in a good and safe place now. If someone broke your heart than I am so sorry that they couldn’t see the way you look so beautiful because of the heart you have. Anyone who gets to be with you, doesn’t know how fucking lucky he/ she/ they is :). If you aren’t accepted at home or in general than I am so sorry that you have to deal with someone/ something you shouldn’t be ashamed of, I accept you and support you, I accept you as a human being no matter what race, religion, nationality, skin color, or sexuality you have. You’re safe here with me :). You’re not useless, you’re not a burden to anyone. You’re not a problem, you’re human and your feelings are valid. You’re not being dramatic. Please don’t starve yourself, you deserve food and to drink, I know it’s hard. It hurts to see that you’re in so much pain :( you deserve so much man, don’t let your emotions control you. Don’t let them get the best of you. I am sorry no one is noticing, I wish /hope I could take your pain away for today or even for a moment while you’re reading this. If no one told you, I am so proud of you, you’re reading this and it’s enough for me to be proud of you because you’re here and that’s all that matters to me. If it’s night for you, go to sleep, I know it’s hard to fall asleep right now but you deserve a good sleep. If you have nightmares, please, don’t let them fight you. If it’s day for you, don’t start it by such sad music, I know it’s impossible to have a good day with such mindset but take baby steps, start by drinking two cups of water everyday in the morning and so on.. You will start building little healthy habits. If it’s evening for you, you’re probably overwhelmed and stressed, I want you to know it’s okay to feel the way you feel. You don’t need to be scared, of course you’re overwhelmed or stressed, I mean who wouldn’t? But it’s important to know that when you feel that way you should do a little self care, such as taking a bath for example? You deserve to feel at ease and relaxed.
And if you are somewhere in between I hope you know that you’re so strong for breathing despite the pain, I know you will make it :) I believe in you. for some time, this song and "wheres my love" made me feel like dying, not necessarily committing suicide but getting washed away, or disappearing. i've never been suicidal, but i wondered if people would miss me and remember me like they do with singers, painters, and philosophers. Obviously i'm not anywhere close to being famous, and i don't want to be, but i wonder sometimes whose lives i've affected along the way. Who have i hurt unknowingly, who have i helped. Do i mean anything to anyone...did i ever make a difference or will my breath be my only legacy? I overthink too much... i think it shows...

I've had thoughts of dieing without meaning that i would commit suicide. It has crossed my mind if my absence would make a difference to anyone, if i ve ever helped anyone or hurt anyone unknowingly. I don't have an answer for these questions but i do know that my family will never be the same without me. Even if you don't hear it in words you always feel if you mean anything to anyone, if your are an important member in someones life.

i'm a dancer and sometimes when i'm dancing in my room something happens within me and i enter this kinda odd but very satisfying state of mind. this is exactly how it feels. i feel connected to and in synch with the earth, the trees, the rivers and the whole universe even though i'm inside my house. i miss dancing in the woods, but i can't go anymore, they're watching now.

Their music is captivating and I find solace in it. I believe this song was written as a sequel before “Where’s my Love” he knew what she did. In this song you see her dancing in the water with no fear and Where’s my love she drowns herself and commits suicide. “.. Their music goes way beyond a spiritual level, not religious just spiritual. Whomever understands that know truly what their music signifies.

Fear of feeling. My interpretation. Water stands for the flowing emotions, dance, nature.. Emotions, feelings. Feeling the earth. Oneness. So fear of feeling.

It makes me really happy that SYML posted the video here on his channel! I don't know if any of you recognise me, but I commented a theory on the video posted to Nettwerk Music a few years ago, stating how I thought this and 'Where's My Love' are connected. It's really interesting that many people here have theories too, and how this could even link to depression. That's the magic and beauty of this song and this video, too. It could be about anything. As this song has aged, so have I, and with it, my thoughts and feelings regarding this song. I still stand by my theory but I am so open to all the others.
Perhaps the water that he so eloquently sings about is indeed depression, and reflects the consuming nature of it. It gushes over you, it is an "ancient call" that you've heard of, you've had glimpses of in your life, yet now, it is everywhere: in the very steps that you take ("under the floor"), in the "walls" that surround you (which could perhaps reflect the metaphorical walls people put up to keep others out when they suffer from such a thing). You develop a "fear" of the "water", yet you cannot escape it, because it tempts you ("smiles" when it dives in), it holds your "body" and your "breath", prevents you from living normally, and in some cases, it is deadly and it is the last thing you are left with ("see your face when I black out") before you drown yourself in it and "never come back". Maybe the "love" in 'Where's My Love' is the happiness that is desperately sought after once it disappeared and hid away "like a ghost".
Or maybe it is about lost love and is a sequel to the other song. A person on the other video of this replied to my other comment, saying that SYML did say that, in some shape or form, all of his songs are connected. I love that. It makes me think that it is our interpretations that matter most, because they are personal to us and they help us to think in depth about the lyrics and what they mean to us.
Let us not forget, though, the individual beauty that these songs have. SYML is an incredibly talented songwriter and his songs have helped me through a lot. What an incredible man he is. 💙

For me, this song is the incarnate of nostalgia. It reminds me of the sand dunes and mountains I grew up watching. Of times I travelled from one city to another. Of the road trips I had with my family. It reminds me of clear skies and the sound of waves hitting the shore as I walked along the park. It reminds me of date tress everywhere. It reminds me of a home I can no longer go to because I had been harshly kicked out from. It reminds of that home that I thought was mine but was never accepted it. Yet, the memories leave bittersweet taste in my mouth. It leaves an unsettling sense of tension in my bones. Even after all these years I can't bring myself to hate the country I grew up calling my home because of the countless precious memories it gave me. I am a third culture kid who never belonged to one country or another but somehow I found myself torn between the country I thought of as a my own and the country that is actually my home.

Honestly, that is the most treasured and loved song of mine. I've never connected to a song on such personal and level, so just thinking about it feels intimate.
For me it always was a song about what one feels after the suicide of a depressed lover. After rage, blaming the lover for being selfish, you begin to realise something.
Thinking about how selfish you are by not realising in time how they must have suffered so it seemed easier to not exist at all than to be themself; they felt like they are a burden to everyone around them and didn't want to be troublesome ever again. People who commit suicide don't want to die, they do not want to live their lifes, and the only way out is through death. It's scary, it's incredibly scary and no person wants to die, everyone wants and deserves salvation, yet it's so difficult to seek for help, to ask for attention, to cause someone trouble once again.
And you begin to wonder if you were blinded by your happiness and didn't notice the signs of how they felt. Didn't they trust me enough to tell me? Were they afraid of what I would think of them? Did they think of themself as a burden even when it comes to us? Didn't I show them enough love to let them know that I will be with them no matter what because I love them and not because I pity them? Was my love not enough to save them? Could I save them?
You believe it is your fault and start hating yourself for what you did and didn't do, for not being enough to be worth living for.
These thoughts will only hurt you even more, they aren't true, they never were. They loved you and didn't want to ruin your happines by putting on you their feelings that are a burden in their eyes. They felt they don't have the right to feel that way when everything is perfect, when you, their everything, are happy. They should have felt happy, too.
Thinking about that only made things worse: they didn't believed they deserve that happiness. They believed you deserve someone better with whom you could be truly happy.
You will do anything only to bring them back, to let them know you love them more than it is possible to describe with words, you wish you could do something to make them see it. But deep down you know it's not possible, it's already too late. The possibilities of what could have been done is the only thing you endlessly think about. You're starting to realise that you slowly begin to understand what it's like to not want to live the life you have now and it's scary. You begin to look at the escape they chose and as it is scary, the possibility of being together with them again is tempting.
But you know the grief other people go through after someone they love takes their life, you know the dangerous thoughts circling your mind day and night, and you don't what people who love you feel that way. They tell you the end of your loved one isn't the end of your life and as much as you hate them saying you'll be happy again, they are right and no matter how difficult it is, you have to accept what you have now and move on. It doesn't have to happen right now, it takes a lot of time and it's okay to feel the way you do, yet you must know that your suffering won't change the past and it will only bring you more misery.
Think about your loved one. They are much more than just depression and they deserve to be remembered for who they were, not for the last thing that happened to them, because even after they're gone, the memories you created together remain. Don't let all their effort to make you happy be in vain. Better think about their smile, their laugh, their little habits they didn't even notice but you knew so well. They're a whole world that you're a part of, so protect it. They don't want you to feel bad, they want to you be happy, you're not alone.

Beautiful song 🎧 this remains me when I found out my husband cheating… “I was the last to know”,-“I felt dislocated”, it was painful,-“Im never not coming back” “ if were not meant for me, why did we fall in love?” So many of the lyrics I can relate to, I felt like drowning in my own bloody tears,I felt like dying, yet, here I am now, stronger because of it.
I absolutely enjoyed listening to this today, is on my favorite lists & playing it on repeat…. So lovely calming to listen to voice and sound together, mesmerizing to me yo say the least❤️🩹
