Those horses asses at BBC cancelled this series after three episodes. It was head and shoulders above other detective shows. They had lightning in a bottle with Rufus Sewell and the cast, decent enough scripts, wonderful locations, and a cool theme. Zen has aged well while others have not. The author of the Aurelio Zen books, Michael Dibdin was pivotal in sending euro-noir into the mainstream. They’re cracking good reads, and historic antecedents to writers like Nesbo, Carlotto et al.
Yeah I remember really enjoying it when I was like 15 but I still like it now as an actual adult of almost 30. The locations and theme really give this an edge. I'm sad they weren't given more episodes for character development, it had so much potential.
Buy the DVD! I watch Zen as much as Persuasion(2008) or Pride and Prejudice (1995). The screenplay is 10x better than the books. Better than 100 other movies.
