By the time Joni wrote this song, she'd left her home and family, dropped out of art school and given up a child for adoption. She had plenty to reflect back on.
What I love about her later versions is that she finally understands what the words mean - the mature woman looking back
Exactly. Now she realises just how much she really didn't know clouds, love, life at all. And that's the lesson the younger Joni sang, but could not possibly have understood. The 'not knowing' comes from two different places.
I think she ALWAYS knew what the words meant. Perhaps you mean she brings more emotion to her performance.....or perhaps we do.
This interpretation is so melancholy, so raw. This is an older woman looking back on love and life. Years of smoking brought dramatic changes in her voice. Always brings me to tears.
For me, the greatest song written in my lifetime. I remember the original, and it was almost hopeful. But later in life, instead of hope, there are regrets. I will never know love or life. Thank you for taking the time with this song.

This is so brilliant. Her voice had radically changed and instead of clinging onto her younger voice and youth she adapted to thos new lower instrument. I actually prefer the newer version, not only for the change in voice but the wisdom she emanates in this song given her experience.
It's my prefered version, so emotional. Thank you for make me remember Joni, a great artist.
It's raw - that's the word. The volume conveys the raw feelings. It's not just singing a song, it's really conveying those experiences she's singing out.
You picked an outstanding song and performance. Joni aged, smoked away an octave or two. Her poetry, voice and music always had a way of getting into the heads of her audience, but this time, she moves memories. Joni is also regarded as a great guitar player, plays multiple instruments. As a fan and a kid in the 60's, I was taken by her songs. Her composition here, 40 years later is personal, stops me in my tracks, blows my mind. Reminds of the old saying: "I know so much because I know I don't know so much".
Yes, this song by this master now has the gravity and depth of life that everyone grew up with in the 70’s understands. It is a soft and glorious punch to the soul. It is funny, I wrote this comment watching your reaction before your mention of the word “soul” at about 7:50 in. Love your observations!!!
Joni's herself prefers this version because she said that the lyrics are just more meaningful with love/life experience.
I was 15 when her album Court and Spark came out in 74 I wore out that album, As a young musician I could not really process the intricacies, but I could process the artistry. I loved her before that, li ed Woodstock when it came out and Both Sides Now, loved her later albums...but Court and Spark album is my favorite. HELP ME and Free Man in Paris. Court and Spark was my first album by Joni. I was also 15. Still my favorite of all her work. I bought "Blue" later when I was in College, but didn't appreciate it fully. It's now almost on par with Court & Spark for me. Hejira is right up there too. Been listening to her a lot lately for some reason...

I've heard this song so many times, also covers from my childhood back in the 70s, through the years.
I feel that I've really only actually heard it now, with this version.
The orchestra brought an uneasy moody tense feeling in my stomach and Joni's phrasing broke it down for me to ponder each section and the verses.
This version hits deep, and I found so much more meaning, more structural elements were uncovered, like the words playing off her interval choices. Then there are the ideas she brought, Joni isn't the only one who matured enough to really comprehend and appreciate this song on a deeper level.

This was a tribute concert for Joni... you should hear Diana Krall sing Joni’s song “A Case Of You” from this concert!
First heard the recording of this version in the movie “love actually.” I had had a dream about someone who passed and that gave the song additional meaning to me at that time. I then bought this album and listened to it on repeat many times until I memorized every little detail. Seeing this when it first aired was a great experience, too. I just think it’s one of the richest, most perfect performances - the phrasing is incredible. I am not sure but I think her jerky movements might have been caused by a neuro condition actually. “Case of you” on this album is amazing, too.

You & Nani gave a very good reaction on this new version. Just want to point out a few things.
At this point in 2000, Joni Mitchell had already adopted or developed a jazzy style in the altho range. (She mentioned that both her mom & grandma both had altho voices) Different from her folk days when she had a mezzo soprano range. Joni Mitchell shoukd be very happy to know that you feel this version is completely different. She's a very progressive artist & is always finding new methods of doing things. She mentioned that she doesn't look back at her old songs unless she has to. Looking back is very stagnant, she said.
2ndly, about her swaying or wiggling as you put it. She had been performing with a guitar strapped onto her shoulders for years. If you watch those performances you'll see that she has always been swaying to the rhythm of the music. In this performance you can see she's still moving her fingers as if she's playing the guitar. So the wiggling here seemed more obvious without her guitar. So please don't feel uneasy. 😀
3rdly this song was inspired by Saul Bellow's book, Henderson The Rain King, while she was reading it on a flight. A passage of the book states something like, "we're the 1st generation to see clouds downwards, we're privileged that now we can see the clouds from both sides. She looked out the window of the aircraft & she saw clouds too.
At that point in time, IMO, she had already gone through so much of turbulence that many 30 or 40 year old women had not even experienced before. Fought off polio on her own at a hospital with other polio affected boys dying, working her way through college, got pregnant, dropped out of college, went into hiding, had to give up her baby for adoption, married a wrong boy who didn't treat her well & was only interested to take advantage of her talents & got divorced. So when she was inspired to write this song during that fateful flight, she already had all the essential experiences to compose this masterpiece.
Lastly, in her own words, "If you listen to my songs & you see me, I've accomplished nothing. If my songs make you feel something about yourself, probably make you cry & learn something & understand yourself better, then the songs had achieved their goals."

The slower tempo and lower key both convey more reflection on life. My understanding is that she had already had some major life experiences at 23. She wasn't singing out of no real experience at all, but obviously now she has so much more life experience.
Nice to see your interaction on this version. Nani directly taken in by the whole atmosphere in which Joni conveyed her message. Instant fan-mode. You saw this clip earlier, didn't you? Linor holding back, I guess thinking of some 20 technical judgements forming on the fly... also caring not to spoil the adoration that Nani feels. Then finding aspects of the performance to be positive about and finding some common ground. It is like a story unfolding, also in body language... unless I am mistaken and then I apologize! You must be quite dear to each other! Keep it up ladies!
Btw Joni has been my heroine for more than 40 years... I adore this version but I don't like all the tempo changes within sentences. Could be a breath thing?
You're not wrong and this is typical Oren. There's a sharp refinement to her professional side, which cuts through what people usually use to judge something, which is sentimentality. This refinement is what the channel is actually about, but few people understand it. They're just using her to validate their feelings about certain acts and artists and don't consider or grasp Oren's perspective at all. And poor Oren is trapped between a kind of ruthlessness that true analysis from her perspective requires, and her need to be socially integrated and accepted. She has made the mistake of saying what she really thinks before, and she had to suffer the wrath of insulted fans.
Regarding Mitchell; technically, singing has never been her strong point, something she's admitted to a million times, and her smoking three packs a day probably didn't help that either. But she is, or was, a tremendous talent and intellect at a number of other important things relating to music, and in my opinion she wrote some of the best lyrics ever made.
Yes, a totally different version, she's not only older, but she's doing it 3+ keys lower and a LOT slower! I like it more up tempo personally, for me it doesn't gain any poignancy at this tempo. I love performing this song, I don't think I could ever FEEL it, or SELL it doing it like this, but it is interesting to see an artist reinterpret their own works years later 😄
This is sort of like listening to Trent Reznor's version of Hurt then Johnny Cash's version of the same song. The perspective of age can transform the lyrics. This is a beautiful arrangement and it always has an emotional impact on me. Joni is an amazing artist.

For me the 3 albums she brought out with Jaco Pastorius on bass are the best albums, but ever since... She is a true goddess, an amazing woman with such a gift to perform a song, put lyrics in places you think impossible... awkward gestures, for sure, but that is the way she always moves...

People thinking that Joni didn't understand the song when she originally wrote it drives me insane. She wrote the lyrics from her perspective at the time. Now she has a different perspective as she revisits the song. Also, her voice has changed & she is singing with an orchestra which gives her the freedom of emoting as a singer without being constrained by also having to be the main musician.
Joni IS a goddess. She has been singing for at least 50 yrs.
It always had so much content......the passing years have added proof to that content.....I think she understands how true her own words have become for herself

She's applying her understanding of jazz singing to her old pop music. She really hasn't a jazz voice, but this is good.
You talk about the body swaying during the song, But what I see is a women who has preformed with a guitar for many years moving her shoulders as she moved her quitar for decades. It is all muscle memories. I have loved her music for years.
This was the only song she sang at the END of a long tribute program in her honor, with other musicians performing her music etc.. she left the audience after watching the program, to go on stage. Would seem logical that she could have experienced added emotion impacting her performance, having just experienced the honors and performances. Throughout her career she seldom just "stood and sang", and when she did, she often moved a bit to the music.. the dancer in her. :D

love this version. Evocative, deep. So much better than original. All the weight of actually looking back at life. We need a word for the feeling this evokes ... nostalgia has too many negative and worn connotations. This wistful remembering, full of realisation, regret and knowing really hits you deeply at a certain age ... its a bit overwhelming to be honest.

The music is played in such a way that she may go in any direction she wants to. I bet she sang this differently in rehearsal.
I think smoking has changed her voice a lot and the fact she had polio and another condition later on in life but have said this she is still amazing.🌷💕

How did she write a song that would be more honest 40 years in the future ?
A 24 yr old songwriter wrote a song for her 57 yr old self to sing.
This is hard to listen to being so used to the driving original version. I sung this song about 7 hours ago. I consciously clung to the root note and drove the song. I can't sing as high as she used to sing but still pitched it here and there. Since this concert she's been a in a coma. Someone said smoking was to blame. I don't know but it's hard to hear a once great singer's voice falter. It's still a great song though. You can see pictures of her at Mama Cass's house for a barbecue. Mickey from the Monkees was there, Eric clapton and she had her guitar and performed her debut album from memory including this song.
I've been a Joni fan since the late 1960s. This version disturbed me when I heard it in 2000, and it still does. Of course singers have changes with age, but I fear she severely damaged her voice with smoking. Her labored breathing is hard to ignore, and if I didn't know it was Joni, I'd not have a clue who was singing.
There's something I find beautiful in how she adapted this song to suit her voice and because of the lived experiences of someone who had really experienced life, I much prefer this version
I know that Joni has been a heavy smoker for years, so wondering if causes a change in her voice. Linor has a slight Ivrit accent so so does Nani a bit along with a touch of S.A. thrown in, lol. Good videos please keep them coming in, much appreciated.

She was a legendary Italian singer! 😊♥️ this song in particular is one of her bests and a masterpiece. It talks about people, pain and moments in life .. until you find that one person in the universe that is different from everybody else. She talks to this man and tells him to never change, that he is such a big love for her she don't wanna lose.

Linor, authentic got mentioned but I kept shouting ‘natural to Joni’ over her movements - not uncomfortable jiggling around 😤 lol ! But you are both so passionate, deliberate and strong women ( like Joni ) and debate/learn/appreciate off each other’s strengths, knowledge and opinions so well & acceptingly it’s great to see and hear. Maybe I’ve heard variants of this song so often by Joni over the years I automatically adjust to the song without feeling the differences as acutely with the ‘barely recognisable’ / arrangement nuances passing me by in comfort.
