    I'm the developer, thanks for the review!
    Some of these Chinese translations are pretty amusing. Low quality Chinese Translations is a known issue ( github.com/argosopentech/argos-translate/issues/17 ), but translations for other languages are much better. There are some tweaks that may help but ultimately Chinese translation is a hard problem and there isn't as much data available publicly as big companies like Google have access to.
    The delay is because it's translating locally on your CPU vs on Google's server on a GPU/TPU. It's possible to translate on a GPU locally but this can takes some configuration and isn't enabled by default.
    3:45 when it translates from Chinese to German this is because both English-Chinese and English-German are installed so it is "pivoting" through English automatically.

      Hello. Is there a way to show the pinyin? It'd be really useful.

      It pivots from Chinese to English, then from English to German? So that's a translation of a translation, right?

    Chinese is just really hard to translate into a western language. They don't have simple words for things, the words are incomplete descriptions of the object. Like a phone is "an electrical device that you hold in your hand". You can read it either way, but with context you should know they mean a phone.
    It's a very woolly language. The fact there's a billion native speakers and only few of them think "y'know, this is a problem. Let's make another system" is a miracle. Props to Korea for actually doing that, though that was mostly for the written language, it has affected the spoken language.

      That's why I hope I am never forced to write in Chinese. Japanese may be hard, but at least they kind of have a substitute, and like you said korean is so much more manageable than chinese.

    moral of the story free software can't compete

    • @vgamesx1
      @vgamesx1 4 года назад +5

      It certainly can, just look at projects like Bitwarden, functionality and security wise it's just as good as any of the major password managers out there but of course to get to be that good you usually need some revenue and more than the table scraps that most free software devs typically get.
