"Replay value" is a great way to describe how Band Maid writes songs. I can't count the number of times I've heard a BM song for the umpteenth time and said "wow, I've never noticed X here before". I think you're also spot on that Kanami is really exploring how far they can push a song into chaos before it becomes too much. It reminds me of when I first started learning jazz guitar and thought all the chords sounded ugly. Once I got used to it, the chords grew on me and I fell in love with 9th chords. Lol.
They wrote this as the opening theme for the anime Platinum End. The orchestral part was a request from the anime's creators. Kanami managed to compose a nifty little arrangement.
I love music but i'm not a musician. I don't know about pentatonic scales & music theory, i just know what sounds good. And man BAND-MAID sound so damn good :)
@@GaryHolloway-810 I agree, and I am having fun learning about the how's and whys of music from the reactors with that knowledge! Makes the music just that much better!
I really enjoy your Band-Maid reactions because I'm a huge Madiac, and I love seeing musicians fall in love in real-time. I hope this experience inspires you to do more without such a break between. Not that I don't enjoy your other videos, but I'm definitely here for the B-M. You've done Onset, Domination, Blooming, and now Sense... Which is a good path for a musician to take. My suggestion for next is Manners/Black Hole (live). I usually don't recommend this to people so early in their Band-Maid journey, because Black Hole can be a little much. But because you are a musician, and you've instantly recognized the talent in composition and layering, I think you will love it. Manners is straight forward classic style rock song. Just to show you some range in their song writing, not to say it's bad or boring, it's awesome, but definitely not as complicated as what follows. Blackhole is a borderline-speed metal wall of sound that really does push the band to their live performance limits (IMO). You'll be blown away. So you'll be reacting to a video that fans love, and you'll get a cheeky two videos for the price of one reaction. :)
If you want to see another side of them take a look at Daydreaming it's a great power ballad and Kanami's (lead guitarist and main composer) work she is the most proud of. Good reaction/breakdown 👍
Always great to hear a musician put into words what really works for the songs... and what _might_ put some off - it seldom applies but I've seen it happen. Appreciated the effort put into the reaction again. This song created for an anime "Platinum End". Worth repeating that this song released with two other 'B' sides (in name only). Waiting for you are 'Hibana' and 'Corallium'. Enjoy.
Puns about the song titles, rewinding to the beginning, ignoring subtitles... Now THIS is a proper BAND-MAID reaction. Great analysis, this is why I enjoy watching musicians react to BAND-MAID. So much going in the songs it's hard to catch it all even after multiple listens.
I have come to the conviction that the sharpness and depth of reactions to Band Maid are directly proportional to the recognition of his compositional genius by sensitive, intelligent and informed reactors ... This is a great example !!
Great analysis and reaction again. I really would like to see more Band-Maid stuff on your channel. It seems like you are enjoying it and i think a lot of other maidiacs also would love to see more of your analysis. Its always a blessing to hear a musician talking about their songs, there is so much to discover and every person has another point of view or to point out something in their compositions. Really great stuff and i enjoyed it a lot. Thanks! Greetings from Germany
I think for very many, your comments are music to their ears and describe very well what most of us appreciate about these ladies and their music. Very well done, and thanks for that! :) Actually every song you can find on their channel can be recommended, but if I had to highlight something it would be 'Real Existence' (Live), Wonderland (Live), 'Play' (Live), 'Alone' (MV) which is their first self-written song where their label at the time gave the OK for a release, and 'Daydreaming' (MV) for totally selfish reasons as this is my favorite song of the ladies. :) Greetings from Germany. _____________________ 【 _Our rock never dies ever. Great to see you back. I like how you say they have pop sensibilities without calling them poppy. I echo the others about reacting to the b-sides Corallium and Hibana (can be found on their playlists on their channel). Both are great but personally I think you would like Corallium more it has a few more twists and turns with some very interesting vocal work that is a bit unique for them IMO
With BAND-MAID there are not limits....they keep pushing the boundaries of their talent that challenge what your ears and mind can take in at one time.
I think the thing that makes it so palatable is that all the members push it to the limit... but not all at once all the time. They very carefully shift the spotlight around so everyone has a time to shine. If you haven't listened to Thrill - their first breakout hit - now's a great time. Maybe do a two-fer - the MV and the live. I think it'll be very interesting for you to see where they were back then compared to where they are now.
Indeed a top tier deconstruction of a mammoth aural attack, well done. Lots of work and craftmanship put into this track ably reviewed by yer good self resulting in a wonderful critique. Belfast has at least two Maidiacs. Keep her lit big man!
I love them so much! The excitement in each song start is like the explosive decompression of a 747 at altitude and you are seated by the missing door. Will you be sucked out? No, but you may pass out. Band-Maid tests your endurance with every song! Will you survive???, followed by the words...that was amazing! 5 ladies=500% effort. That is world domination.
Great review as usual! If you like this one, you must give the other two songs a shot, both Hibana and Corallium are bloody awesome as well. Btw, they will have an accustic live stream gig on 25th Dec, a different side of Band Maid which I love very much.
Amazing reaction, as usual! I'm so glad you got back to BAND-MAID. I love that you notice the imput from each member. The progression of their musicianship from their first album to where they are now is really quite amazing. I'd love one day to see a video examining the evolution of their songwriting, stylistic choices and musicianship starting with Alone (their first original song) all the way to Sense (through their most prominent songs). That would probably be a very big undertaking so I don't expect to see this happening, but there would be a lot to talk about!
Great reaction and breakdown JW. Band-Maid puts 200% into all their songs and anything they do. From birthday bashes to concerts. They are performing an online Christmas Day acoustic set which will no doubt be AWESOME. You can try their recently streamed 2fer1 Manners/Black Hole which has the groove and rock n roll feel of Manners to the insane and great 220bpm Black Hole. Remember that BAND-MAID is Awesome so don't be a stranger. Peace
It will indeed be AWESOME & i'm going over my brothers on Christmas eve & staying up all night to catch the 3am start (my time). Drinks are available :)
Thanks for the great reaction. Not being a musician myself, I appreciate when reactors with musical knowledge point out things in the music that I hadn't noticed. It enriches my experience of the music and helps me gain a greater appreciation for the song writing. I would suggest BAND-MAID's 2 song live video "Manners, BLACK HOLE", two very different sides to the band. I am interested in your thoughts about the songs. 🤘😎🤘
It seems that you liked what you heard, when listening to Band-Maid. I think, if you jumped back into their music, you'd enjoy listening to "Daydreaming" (which has my favorite Kanami guitar solo), "Dice", or the Live "Manners + Black Hole". Manners is a smooth groove, then Black Hole makes you feel like time and space after collapsing around you (like a black hole). Masterful arrangement. It also makes me sad that you only have 4 Band-Maid reactions on your channel (that I've found). And the last once was 9 months ago. Either way... I love your insights on composition. It's always nice to have my beliefs and feelings reinforced by someone that knows what they're talking about, because of either study or practice, or both. Thanks Rock On!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Nice !. Excellent review (loved your comment about the hell of mixing this assault sonic wave). This concept of balance between tight and complex songwriting, catchiness and experimentation it´s what makes me turning around Band Maid like a firefly and a light bulb. Not many bands manage to give their best 100% in every song. They are now like a sisterhood of sorcerers pushing themselves in a supportive, but very selfdemanding, race looking for the excelence. And none of them wants to fall behind. I´m now five years like a groupie/fanboy and they have never ceased to amaze me over and over again. Thank you!! BTW: I´ve enjoyed through your Fear Inoculum trip. If you ever have time (I know being a father is extremely demanding), I would love for you to do something similar with Unseen World, the latest LP by these girls.
I subed becasue of the other Band-Maid reactions you did. I really enjoy your break down of their music. Hopefully you do some more. Some others are Manners, Black Hole, Warning !, No God just to name a few. They have tons of music. Great Job!
I think you summarised BM well. It is like a drum solo, a bass solo, and a lead guitar solo -- and even a rhythm guitar solo -- all happening at the same time, and yet fitting together ... with the vocal solo (and vocal backup) -- a wall of busy sound, but such a talented wall of busy sound. Like polyphonic music in the Baroque era, a lot is happening, but it all blends together into a rich sound. And THAT is Band-Maid. And that is why we love them.
I am obsessed with Band-Maid so I tend to look for Band-Maid reactors who add value to łistening to them. I also appreciate your insightful breakdow of their songs. You made a little word play with "sense" in this video but your word play with the "blooming" structure of their music in Blooming (you are the only reactor I've seen who recognized that) proved how much you understand music structure. Please do more Band-Maid reactions. When people like you open my musical ears to Band-Maid songs, I become more of a maidiac.
Band maid doing Band maid stuff.. Great reaction JW.. Explained why we all love this group so much perfectly.. Moratorium live would be good, or Take me higher live with the Lead/bass duel.. Hell anything by them.. It's all good.. PS.. Still waiting for my Gacharic spin Minset MV take.. You are going to love it. Very funky, needs explaining by an expert.. :) Would really like to hear your take. Best wishes from France
What’s even better is that they pull this song off live. I saw them last autumn. And they played this among many other songs. They don’t ever create a song that they can’t pull off live.
Out of the three songs released in October, "Sense" is probably my favorite. So many tasty treats tucked inside (how alliterative of me...sorry), until I hear "Hibana", and that tune just JAMS!, But, alas, then "Corallium" graces my brain and the VOCALZ! my-oh-my! Of course, then "Sense" plays again and... 🤯 Thanks JW! 🕊
Thanks again for your reaction and analysis. Discerning musicians like yourself are almost always the ones that get Band-Maid first. The instrumental and vocal parts are carefully planned and interconnected, and their main composer, Kanami Tono (lead guitar), is a master songwriter. The other two recent single releases, Hibana and Corallium, are also great, as is everything from their latest full album, Unseen World (e.g. Giovanni or HGK). If you want switch gears and try a soul-melting ballad, go for Anemone or the classic Daydreaming. All of these are on the official channel, and thus, less apt to be dinged for a reaction post.
Great reaction and analysis as always 👌🏻 BAND-MAID have released 2 other songs in their "Sense" EP, "Hibana" and "Corallium". "Sense" is the most straight forward of the three. I'll suggest "Corallium" next because it is my favorite of this EP. But you can do both. There's no MV, just the audio on the official BAND-MAID RUclips channel. Thank you
Great reaction - thanks :) And you are right- if you wanna hear all the cool stuff each instrument is doing the only way is to listen to the song a few times while just trying to focus on that one instrument. If you dont do that, you will be hearing new stuff still after dozens of listens as different parts stand out. They always have a lot of stuff going on beyond the minimum phoned in amount they coulda got away with.
Band-Maid is definitely music for musicians. I'm a percussionist and just starting to learn bass, so obviously Akane and MISA are my favorites, but they're all wonderful musicians. Over the past year they've quickly become my favorite artists of all time, edging out my previous longtime favorite, Buckethead (which for me, is saying a LOT). Love these girls.
Thank you for your insights and analyses of Band-Maid's Sense. I read recently that the orchestral intro to Sense was written by none other than the same musician that writes most of the music for the group Kanami Tono. According to the information, she had never written an orchestral arrangement before so she talked to some musicians and went to work. While I don't have your background and ear. I think all of us can "hear" the music and perceive there is something special there but most of us, myself especially, can't adequately articulate what it is exactly that we are hearing. We just know it resonates. Great job, I will look forward to more of your reactions.
The Sense EP was released with three songs. You might like the "B" side: Hibana and Corallium...many think they hit harder than Sense. These girls never mail it in...every track is an honest effort to produce a great song. There are no "B" sides. This is true of everything in their 100 plus song catalog. So, where next?...take your pick...you can't miss. Also, of all the musicians who do reaction videos, your original stuff is the real deal. Your music's got some punch and brains behind it.
I feel like one of the strongest parts of band maid is kind of their restraint… Not like they aren’t playing hard but with so much talent they never really seem to push their respected parts too far or too much… I’m not a musician by any means but I love musicality. This band hits every one of my buttons when it comes to that… great job kind of explaining what I have trouble doing because I do not have the words.
Where next with Band-Maid? Well, it doesn't really matter. Like most others will say, you can't go wrong with ANY of their songs. My favorite Band-Maid song is whichever one I'm currently listening to.
This is actually the opening song for the Anime Platinum End , and as the Lyrics fit the Content of the Show perfectly , it might been composed for this purpose. I dont know for sure.
Sense was written as the opening to an anime called Platinum End, which is why the pacing is so fast, and the length is a little more abbreviated. Different is the same way, being the opening for the season 3 of Log Horizon.
Really glad you mentioned the mixing; it's something that I often feel doesn't get enough credit and is absolutely critical. One of the first things I noticed about BAND-MAID is that I could actually *hear* the bass. Obviously part of that is due to another thing you described, being that nobody is phoning it in. MISA's bass has a style unlike that of anyone else, but even with that being the case it could easily be lost to poor sound engineering.

Among BAND-MAID’s recent offerings, No God is highly re-listenable, especially the live version. Also the Manners/Black Hole double header. Black Hole, in particular, is hard to get into, but it rewards a listener’s perseverance.
Being a huge Band Maid fan....I would like to suggest another band named Nemophila. This is a Heavy metal band from Japan made up from an all star cast of the top female metal musicians in Japan. They are the only other band that can match the musicianship of Band Maid. Their two guitarist are considered prodigy's in Japan and are very well known. The drummer is considered one of the top female drummers in the world and the vocalist.....well lets just say...get ready to strap you boots on. This band is really gaining popularity and would be huge if not for starting out and then covid hitting. Check out Dissension, Monster and Hypnosis. I think you will blown away how good these girls are . I like their style much more than Lovebites. They have to be the COOLIST band out there !!!!!! You will see what I mean . lol
Rick Beato complained that there’s too much compression in this recording. I’ve wondered whether it might sound better without that. Do you have any thoughts?

@@2abug Heeeey! You can't make a fire without a spark. Nya nya.😛
@@GaryHolloway-810 Exactly! “Hibana” is a warm up for “Corallium”
@@2abug I'm just going to say they compliment each other. Im so diplomatic.😏
Great breakdown..
thx again, great to see you back 😁😁
Great reaction - thanks :) And you are right- if you wanna hear all the cool stuff each instrument is doing the only way is to listen to the song a few times while just trying to focus on that one instrument.
MISA MISA MISA!
Good to know I'm not the only self deprecating artist out there! Its fun, not a flaw, carry on!
Best analysis I've heard on this song yet!👍❤ Four songs into bandmaid and I feel you know what the maids and maidiac are about!🤘🤘😀
Exactly.

Great reaction & analysis, Band Maid never disappoints! 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🙂
Great reaction as always man. Yeah thats bandmaid doing bandmaid thing🤘
Where next with Band-Maid? Well, it doesn't really matter. Like most others will say, you can't go wrong with ANY of their songs. My favorite Band-Maid song is whichever one I'm currently listening to.
this band is in control not over driven in their music just right fill in the music
Thanks for You very Good reaction !!!! Liked and Subscribed.
And alyways remember: Its Band-Maid :-)
This is actually the opening song for the Anime Platinum End , and as the Lyrics fit the Content of the Show perfectly , it might been composed for this purpose. I dont know for sure.
This song was designed to he an intro to a serial anime, and as such it does have a distinctive ani-song vibe to it.
Sense was written as the opening to an anime called Platinum End, which is why the pacing is so fast, and the length is a little more abbreviated. Different is the same way, being the opening for the season 3 of Log Horizon.
Kanami has a LOT of Eventide harmonizer going on in this song. Sounds doubled and more. Awesome.
Please check out some other Japanese bands besides Band-Maid. There are many excellent ones out there. Lovebites, Gacharic Spin, Galneryus ...
Great, great reaction. Subscribed. I would say Warning MV, then Corallium next.
Better live too. The best rock band out there the last few years. Perfect band in every way. Fucking incredible

Wahoo🤘🤘🤘 (not my best comment I know but I just had to say it.)
this song is actually for a japanese anime, just like their song "Different"
Please reaction to " ANEMONE(アネモネ) " or " AWKWARD (ワアークワード) " by BAND-MAID
I don't think it was this particular tune. I believe it was "Choose Me"
@@federerfanatic it was both.
(JW Soundworks) - Your are so good at the guitar, Boss SY-200, do you like it or not?
Kanami probably mixes this along with some engineers?
Bro, check also to another all females Metal Band HANABIE song We Love Sweets(Japanese JINJER)
Hibana,Rinne e Black Hole....poi si decolla!!!
The Warning, Band-Maid and …Lovebites.
Can you do Mr Bungle - stubb a dubb?
賢者タイム笑👍
Good review. If you like Band-Maid then have a listen and watch a Japanese female metal group called ALDIOUS and view the song / video WE ARE.
Saludos, I am a new subscriber, waiting for more reactions from Band Maid, please react to Real Existence Music Video, Moratotium Live Video, Dice and Rine MV, Puzzle Live or acustic, thanks
Always the B side next PO !
Don't apologize. I was enjoying the Tool reactions. I love Band-Maid but some space between reactions is fine with me. I have a request for you. A Band called Wagakki Band, this song: ruclips.net/video/aWlMc-pbDc8/видео.html
I think these Japanese bands have a unique way of melding genres that is special.
As my favourite reaction bloke, I would really like you to react to "Rosensage (live at Sebright Arms, April 2016)" by 'A Formal Horse'. I think they might interest you as they are a bit unusual. I describe them as a cross between Curved Air and Slapp Happy (although that does date me somewhat!). They do have more modern stuff, but this is my favourite performance of theirs. Regards. ruclips.net/video/g_UdrXD9vnk/видео.html
"Keeping you guessing"...Nooooooooooooo not Bnad-Maid.... they would never do that. And the "Band-Maid Juggernaut" keeps rolling on!
welp it is offcial now....band maid is drugs. Completely agree o that on and man am i addicted, can't get enough
…………………………………. Akane!
Try Daydreaming
Have you ever heard of the band Lovebites? All female metal band from Japan. Check it out, especially LIVE performance. Lovebites singing in english. You'll be blown away. Try "Break The Wall".
