Eddy it’s a beefed up front end as well. But ya. Just a beefed up sporty with a small “iconic” fuel tank. Lol. And forward controls for taller riders. Definitely more tall rider friendly.
@@sclyon im tall and i dont like forward control, i like to have the leg bend under myself, i can control the bike better and for some reason im more confortable on long ride like that, when i can 'unfold it all' after a while i feel tired in the legs
there very cute and small just the right size for me cause i am 5.11 tall never rode a harley Davidson bike but looking forward getting one someday to match my new harley truck if i ever win the lottrey lol
I had a Forty eight before my Slim and the seat was the firs thing I replaced. I don’t know what the hell that miserable seat was supposed to do since I felt like I was slipping off the back whenever I hit the throttle. Aside from the seat the Forty Eight was awesome. I mainly rode it around town and back country roads so the smaller gas tank didn’t bother me until I started going on longer trips. As always I enjoy your videos.
Amazing video as always. The Iron 1200 is the one I want to test ride, since it seems the perfect compromise between commuting and small tours, but it‘s not as expensive as the Sportglide.
Hey Block, I just left Lane Splitter Harley Davidson in San Jose, CA. Bought my first motorcycle, a 2016 Harley Davidson Forty Eight! Still have the jitters for sure. Just wanted to let you know that your videos have been a huge influence throughout the process of learning to ride, getting licensed and shopping. Thanks for all of the great work you've put into the vlog and the riding community. Your channel has provided huge huge value for me. Keep it up, and see you down the road. Deuces!
IMO the Harley tax is an exhaust, seat, bars and suspension. Harley really needs to actually update the sportster. I like the decals and the seat on the iron but the rest isn't really anything to write home about. They need to start taking chances like they did with the new softails.
Giovanni Santana cant only do exhaust. Output needs air input. Needs fuel mixture. So going to need high airflow airfilter and gas/air mixture re adjustment.
+Erick de viking you do not need an intake to run an aftermarket Exhaust the bike will run fine with it most even without a rejet or a tuner. Yes You can benefit from more power if you do but it's not essential.
I wanted to see Harley make the 48 into a 103 cubic inch motor or something with more power or at least with a stage 2 upgrade. For the price it is, the upgrades are very minimal. They should of turn the 48 into a fxr
Its a tough decision.. They both turned out to be really good looking bikes. I would just have to have the Primary cover and Case/Sprocket cover changed out to black. I absolutely hate chrome, except as a small tiny accent like the push rod covers. Other than that if I fit right I will be getting one of these two bikes..
I'd take the 48 over the iron. Not a fan of the all black, i need some chrome on my rides. The fat front tire is a must too, rides and handles sooo much better than the skinny fronts. I went from a softtail to a road king and i could believe how much better the ride and the handling is. No more skinny fronts and fat backs for me unless. its on drag bike.
I'm looking at both a Sportster 48 and a Sportster 48 Special. I'm 5'8" with an inseam of 29". Would the higher handlebars on the Special be more usable for a taller rider? Would either 48 also be more suited for a taller person than the other? Thanks.
Love that extra - quicker through the air, less wind resistance. Believe it or not. Harley should have a 2 for 1 deal - throw in a Sportster Iron with any bagger as a round town bike, they have a place. Try the Cafe racer single seat.
fixing to buy my first harley..been doing my homework for the best deal..like the 1200 and the 48..but new to riding...little nervouse. wanna a bike wirh some go..but not so much to get into trouble..friends have told me to start with the 883..i dont know and dont wanna be pushed into a bad buy...any advise???
My advice, visit a dealership if you carry your license or can go on a motorcycle, and try out both bikes. whichever feels better for you is your choice! Yes the 48 or the 1200 let's say is a bit more direct on the throttle, but it's not that bad for a beginner. Good luck!
Nice review block. Glad to see Harley giving the new sportys some love. Like block says they are solid platforms, great bikes. As a 2017 Xl1200x owner i can vouch , the 48 is awesome. Forward controls and ergos are perfect for me. The harley tax is a must, stage 1 full exhaust, fuelpak fp3 and intake wakes the bike up for power and noise. Bone stock these bikes run lean , sound weak for emissions. So many handlebar options, just personal preference. I actually like the stock drag bars on a 2017 xl1200x, but got to see some 6in Z bars on a 48 (like mrs block has) and i liked those ALOT too. We also own a '16 XL883L, skinnier front tire, way bigger tank. Im considering going up to a 3.3 or 4.1GAL for my 48, but its a tough call it just looks so sleek as is. Someone asked about MPG, depends how you ride. All city isnt going to be as good as freeway miles. Or if youre ripping on it everywhere. But usually im in the 35MPG to 38MPG range city with stage 1. 42-50+MPG highway. Highest was 52MPG. Ive used fuelly app since new. When my bike was bone stock , the MPG was a little better, but nothing crazy.
Hey, I’m loving your vids, I’m very new to the Harley seen, and from the UK, I’m try decide between these 2 bikes, and really can’t make up my mind, but Iv been told that people that buy the iron will wish they bought the 48, do you think there’s some truth in this. Can’t decide which 1🙄
Blockhead I'm torn between the Iron 1200 and the 48. The 48 special has larger front shocks. What can you say about the difference in performance of the two different front shocks?
My name is Aaron. Im a short guy about 5'7.I've been riding for about 2 months now on 750 street rod & been thinking about trading in for the 1200 or a soft tail standard. Which do you think would be better with the little time I've been riding? Thx for your opinion
I like when you give historical backdrop to the bikes. Also, I don't like the speed ferring (lol, don't know how to spell) with taller bars for the iron. Overall, iron is the better buy, but I think the 48 looks better.

This is great man! I’m thinking about getting a forty eight or a special. Tough choice. Black or chrome. Love ms blockheads old forty eight! Eventually want to get a soft tail but this would be the perfect first New Harley.
Hey man, I gotta say thank you for making these videos. It's actually because of you, dandantyefireman and Ryan from fortnine that I actually wanted to get into riding. I actually just got a Kawasaki klr 650 and I should have it here in the next couple weeks.
Hey man I know this has nothing to do with the test ride. But I’m a newer rider and I bought a 2011 road king. It’s super comfy and has lots of power. I’m just wondering if there is anything I should know about keeping this big beast on its wheels. Just worried about tipping over for some reason. Thanks
48 is a bit like a fat boys little bro without the solid wheels. Also liked the iron look but now with 1200. Certainly an option over the fat front tyre 48. So pipes air filter and fuel pack. And don’t forget a new seat on both as the HD tax. Cheers to dude for both reviews. Super cool to see without the computer voice. Lol.
If I were to change the stock rear suspension out for longer suspension would it raise the bikes ground clearance? Also will the new day maker headlamps fit on the 48special?
very good tutorial on the swap with the bikes. the 48 is a really good looking bike. engine sounds ok , still trying to figure out what all that loud tapping is. could possibly be the slack between the rocker arms and valves causing the push rods to smack. if not then it is the main chain drive tensioner gone bad. awsome vlog !!
Scorp its a new bike, my brand new 2017 xl1200x "48" did the same tapping noise. I straight up complained. The harley service guys new dyna did the same, he showed me. It goes away. Mine went away as well. Its part of the break in process. Harley recommends keeping the rpms under 3000 the first 500 miles. I also highly recommend doing the "harley tax" full stage 1. Full exhaust, hi flow air intake, fuel management, i.e. vance and hines fuelpak fp3 is a MUST. My 48 was so weak before i did the stage 1. Now it flys and roars. Seat is a super easy upgrade . Suspension as well. I also took the reflector decals off the forks and rear fender
well , it dosent have to be old to make a noise. . . and it dosent have to be new to be worn or broken... something's not right with that engine. any engine that makes a rattling sound like that . . . . . Can you get forward controls on the Iron 1200? I like the all black look but I don't like the mid controls! I'm a tall guy 6,2" with mid controls I would be too uncomfortable for me!

Yeah, that's why I bought a 2010 Sportster 48 a few months ago and there's one sitting in my garage right now, b/c I "look down on them." Lol, c'mon man! 😂 Sportsters are awesome!
I still think the 2016,2017 and 2018 iron 883 looks better than the new iron 1200. I have the 883 and won't upgrade. I would get a 1200 conversation kit before I would ever upgrade. Your 2010 sportster 48 looks sweet....I like the Z bars
Christopher Garza nightster basically is the iron 1200, or the other way around, whatever anyway its basically the same bike just a different name and paint and shit
jonathan parsons Nightster had spokes on the front wheel, and not fully blacked out. Still, I get where you're coming from. I loved my Nightster compared to the Iron look. We can basically compare all sportsters same way.
I like a balance of black and chrome, too much all blacked out or too much all chromed out misses the mark for me. The old school AMF style graphics are great. After HD incorporated rubber mounts and some Buel technologies in the Sportsters, I agree, that motor is pretty good. But, a peanut tank?? You would be a pain on a group ride, and you having to be constantly on the look-out for petrol stations and everyone else with a half decent size tank having to wait for you to fuel up. Frustrating! Just another example of HD going for styling over functionality. And you did mention the crappy seat, more Harley tax to fit a more comfortable seat. And if you are going to mention or give a plug to V&H fuel/mgt controllers for a new bike, then you should also mention that the new bike warranty will be compromised . You need to stick with the HD fuel/mgt controllers which must be installed by an authorised dealer so that the warranty is maintained.
Harley has started voided warranty’s for using anything other the. Screaming eagle exhaust and putting after market tuners on so if the warranty isn’t important go forward buy a new bike make all the changes loose the warranty
Joseph Hughes just curious where is this occurring at? I've heard the same, but the Owner of the harley shop where i bought from, straight up told me he would never flunk a warranty based solely on exhaust mods and a tuner. People need exhausts on a harley. I personally haven't had a warranty issue. Im running a stage 1, vance and hines full short shots exhaust, v&h fuelpak fp3, joker hi flow intake on my 2017 XL1200X
I was told this by the dealer when I went to order a Vance and Hines full exhaust and was told any bike 2017 or newer it would void the warranty if I change the headers to anything other then stock
Joseph Hughes interesting. I always like to hear real life experiences with warranty claims. I got 1.5yr left on my warranty. Harley completely took care of us on my wife's 883 XL883L. I prefer the vance hines fp3 and full exhaust over the newish screaming eagle and harley tune
I just got one exactly like it from Seminole Harley-Davidson, loving it man!
So basically new tank color scheme and bars?! Way to go Harley...

did you think on the iron the mids was why you were pushing back onto the back of the seat like would forwards have made a difference

Derek Salgat ?

The 48 is good for 1.88 cm guy?
Start @3:30 ... Life is short.

Asuh dude...first one here 😎
Can't stand ape handle bars. Wish they would have used the iron 883 handles.
The intro music hurts my soul
For god sake Harley....1.twin disks 2.inverted forks 3. Soft tail rear end standard.
The shop said they wouldn’t report it but if a warranty rep was in while the bike was in the shop that he could void the drive train warranty
It’s only affecting 2017 and newer
I do my name is Hannah little
Tu quanto sei alto
Great bike, shite handlebars. From a Buell owner.
Wow! Is Harley going back to the AMF days? The graphics look like they are....I don't care for it at all.
