Well, if they have made a movie of this, there should be the revealing of the torture room for Mario Caravandossi, because most productions keep the torture room closed up. According to the libretto, the torture machine depicts something like a crown of thorns that is suspended at head-level, and a circle around the thorns that squeezes to pierce the forehead of the victim (mechanically or hydraulically, probably by a pulling device or wind-up device), causing blood to drip without mercy and forcing the victim to agonize in pain, and backs away when it is required to let go of the torture (especially on the command by Scarpia, "Sciarrone, sciogliete!" (or "release" or "let loose")) The torturer's name is Roberti, who operates the painful machine, and Sciarrone is there to supervise the torturer and interrogate Mario who is in that. This is likely for future operatic productions of "Tosca."
My favorite lines in the torture scene.... SCARPIA: And now, you must tell me the truth! TOSCA: Please, now, can I see him....? SCARPIA: No!............ TOSCA: Mario.... MARIO: Tosca... TOSCA: Are they badly hurting you? MARIO: Please, be strong! Quiet down! Quiet down! I laugh at such agony.........
Is this the orchestra that started rushing so much /from 5.17 min./, that Kabaivanska was hardly able to catch up with the insane tempo??? It's a pity, since this is one of the most important dramatic culminations in the whole opera, an intense emotional escalation... and Tosca's phrases are quite broad and pathetic here. Raina is a phenomenal Tosca! Truly a wonderful cast. Thank you for posting excerpts from that rare live performance!
