      @Cathode Roy I read a biography of CB, and part of the reason for Rod Evens leaving the band was his lack of confidence. He didn't think he could sing well, according to what I read. I tried a couple of times to listen to Dawn Explosion, and I just couldn't get into it. CB without Evens, just doesn't seem right.

A few years ago I started going back in time to listen to old stuff like Bloodrock to see what they actually did, since all I'd ever heard back in the day was DOA. I was surprised how much stuff they'd recorded, and how solid it all was.

  • @grimtraveller7923
    @grimtraveller7923 4 года назад +6

    Captain Beyond were one of those Zeppelin ~ type heavy bands, that is, a heavy rock outfit with quite a few strings to their bow. Acoustic guitars, lovely melodies, great singing, mesmeric drumming from Bobby Caldwell {who repeats the superb driving and dominant ~ in a good way ~ drums a few years later on Armageddon's only album, another thumping heavy rock classic}, fantastically original riffs, hot lead playing, interesting dynamics from loud to soft, subtle tempo and time signature shifts, short powerful songs that don't outlast their welcome......
    I can't even remember why I bought their debut album in the first place, but the fact that I had long loved early Whitesnake & Trapeze and bought Warhorse's debut at the same time suggests that I was interested in what Rod Evans and Nick Simper had gotten up to after they'd left Deep Purple.
    Well, Evans, for me, came out of the Purple phase the best. Captain Beyond's debut is, for me, one of the best heavy albums I've got or heard. While this may cause some people to say "steady on, old chap !" I genuinely feel it is superior to what Deep Purple did that year. Yes, I like it better than "Machine Head," fantastic though aspects of that album may be. As a quick explanation, I think that the versions of "Highway star", "Smoke on the water" and "Lazy" on "Made in Japan" are so superior to the "Machine Head" versions so I'm not one of those that is in thrall to "Machine Head." Consequently, an album like "Captain Beyond" can knock it out of the park and in my opinion, it does.
    There simply is not a moment on the album that I would rather wasn't there. And in "Mesmerization Eclipse" comes one of the greatest riffs in heavy rock ~ and one of the maddest drum performances. If I was doing a compilation of heavy rock for someone, this song would have to be on it. But the whole album is chock full of magnificence. I really dig the way they lean heavily on the progressive currents then doing the rounds in music, while at the same time keeping the songs short and punchy. It's almost annoying in a way ~ one wishes the songs went on longer.
    I've long observed that Rod Evans has been the lead vocalist on two of the greatest debut albums that I've heard, this one and "Shades of Deep Purple." People have said all kinds of horrible things about his singing {even Jon Lord, who said he sounded like Tom Jones !} but I've always dug Evans' singing. Truth is, he knew how to front a heavy band when he was ready, although Bobby Caldwell {or maybe it was Rhino} felt he often lacked confidence.

      to me, just one band compares... and... maybe surpasses them: Armageddon. 1975. their only album, probably my fave hard prog recrod. ever. i'm stating this here because the drummer was Captain's Bobby Caldwell, my fave drummer along with Billy Cobham, Bill Ward, Mitch Mitchell and a couple of others... Armageddon, imho, sounds like a mixture of Zeppelin, Yes, Sabbath and Budgie... not a whole lot of the super great Captain Beyond in their sound, though.

    I have been enjoying your youtube channel. Very interesting. I was leaving high school to leave for serving in the AirForce during Vietnam war. As I was leaving high school Deep Purple hit the big time with Hush. By Joe South. Deep Purple's cover with Rod Evans was one of those songs that makes the senses tingle. I took my guitar along in my service years as I was learning to play guitar. I was pissed that Deep Purple fired Rod Evans. I was so glad that Rod got together with the rest of the guys in Captain. I had their albums and jammed with other Airmen to those albums. I still think Rod Evans was a great singer. I'm glad they have gotten some recognition. Pete. Have you ever heard and listened to Wishbone Ash. I was stationed in England for 2 years and the USA was pulling out of Vietnam. I sing and play covers at open mics just hit the big 70. I do the song Hush with a friend on harmonica instead of keyboards.

    From what I have heard of them I really wish I got into them years ago. I love the spaciness of them. I heard part of the second but I only ever got the debuet. I always loved Deep Purple mark 1. I like the boogie stuff on the second one. I want to get Sufficiently Breathless I have yet to listen to the third one but sounds good from what you said.

    I left my cds in my kia so i had to get online to get my Raging River of fear fix today. Besides eating, sleeping and breathing i have not been more consistant in a daily habit since November of 1971 when my nieghbor and i secured a 1/16th inch thick Radio promo demo. If you count the days since then that i have listened to this first album all you would have to subtract is the days i spent in combat from 75 to 78. Other than that there are less than 30 days in going on 51 years that i have not actually cued it up on the turntable or cassette tapes or cds. When i sit at my drum kit part of my practice regimine is to play along with the entire album. And when i practice bass i always warm up with Distant Sun. Lol i got it bad. People used to show up at my 'studio' and in the beginning many that did not know me all that well would be inmmeadiatly converted as fans and some would ask about them thinking they are a new band. This was ten or twelve years ago and i would say that this is a forty year old masterpiece. They found that astounding. Consider that my 'converts' were not even born then. My 33 year old son heard this music even before he was born and the first time he picked up my bass he knew every single not Lee played. He plays it as if he wrote each instrument piece. He has drawn most of his friends into our evil plan of the Captain's world takeover🤣 JK. If i only had that "deserted island" anology choice it would be this first release. I love Between the Buried and Me, Alice in Chains, Jinger, Breaking Benjamin and many other "fresh" bands and have a pretty diverse collection of music. But i am a 65 year old heavy metal addict and my #1 band is the Captain and his crew!!!! Love them till i die🤣💖🤣

    1) Sufficiently Breathless
    2) Captain Beyond
    3) Dawn Explosion
    I love this band and Sufficiently Breathless is one of the albums I most listened to; Bright Blue Tango, Drifting In Space and Starglow Energy (one of the greatest ballads!) are as groundbreaking as some songs from the debut. Larry 'Rhino' Rheinhardt is one of my fave guitarrists. Unique sound! There's a 4 track demo from 2000 which is really cool. I got the debut album shirt, also.
    Pete, I searched all over the playlist before asking, so, a Golden Earring 'ranking the albums' show, is possible? Cheers!

    Thanks for reviewing this band Pete never really listed to them back in the day in my garage band days because they're a lot better guitar bands around but as I get old and more proggy I'm digging deeper. And because great new music is far in between and harder to find and tends to sound like something that has been done before

    One of my favourite bands, and the debut self-titled is in my top all time favourite albums.
    Lots of bands created lots of things but no one else ever sounded anything like these guys on that first album - to date. Space metal psychedelic proto-stoner. Or something. How could they even put all of that into 1 album?
    I probably prefer 'Dawn Explosion' to 'Sufficiently Breathless' slightly - I think you probably nailed why when you said 'Glenn Hughes-y' and 'more soul' in the third album. 'Breath of Fire' running into 'If you please'; what a ride.

    Saw the recent Captain Beyond tour organized by Bobby Caldwell. Wonderful evening, hope many that watched this video got to see it. Parts of it is found here on RUclips.
    Caldwell in interviews for that tour said he talked to the literally reclusive Rod Evans, the former Deep Purple/Captain Beyond singer. Apparently after Deep Purple sued to prevent him from touring solo using the Deep Purple name in the billing, he went and got a job in Washington state and has been there for about forty years now. Bless Rod Evans, he only did five records but each of them are worthwhile listens.

    I like some of the music by this band. I never thought the singer sounded like Glen Hughes, though. He reminds me of more of the singer from Molly Hatchet (minus the Southern accent), Leslie West, and Jim Morrison sort of mixed together, weaving in and out on various songs. I only know about the first album, but it definitely has some full speed ahead, chugging along parts that just blend in to these somewhat dated (but in a good way) groovy parts. Definitely interesting and pleasant. You better be careful with that t-shirt. If you don't wash it inside out on the gentle cycle, you will have to break out a Bedazzler to replace the missing sequins!

      Yeah, I bought the debut when it first came out. I had no idea who they were but think I just liked the cool 3-D cover art?!! How glad I was that I took a chance on em though! One of the my favorites then and now! Heavy Heavy! As heavy as it is interesting! Talent is what it is! Just curious though JBSOUL..... why the anti-Christ thing? Assuming that’s the implication of the crossed out cross. Personally I dig heavy, hard music but still want salvation! But to each his (or her?) own. Rock on Capt!

    • @brianspruill5424
      @brianspruill5424 3 года назад

      Check out the video of Deep Purple's "Hush". Rod Evans sings lead on that. The crossed out cross is really just a logo used quite often with the punk band, "Bad Religion". Although I find their music meh, I embrace the logo's sentiment. If there was a logo that included all religions crossed out then I would use that.
