  • Today I'm planting daffodils and tulips to use as cut flowers at our stand this year. I plant tulips a bit differently than you would in a landscape planting. Here is some info that has worked for me.

    Yes for the trench method! I inherited all these old but good red and yellow tulpis my parents planted in the late 1950s. They come back reliably every year because they have pulled themselves under over all the years, I dug deep and about 15-18 inches deep found the bulbs, wich I thinks is remarkable. But there are so many new and interessing varieties that every November I find myself digging trenches for the bulbs. This thing with an auger or digging one hole after the other would drive me crazy. Hope your daffs are not going nuts like mine, I ran out of space after 2 years. But they get better and bigger over the years. Happy gardening! Stay safe! Hanni

    You have certainly packed them in! The display in spring is going to be quite something. Good luck with the rest of the bulb planting, it is hard work.

    I purchased two bags of daffodils at Lowe’s yesterday. The shelf said “Fall bulbs 50% off”. At the register they were full price! The cashier had me walk back and take picture of their 50% off off sign and honored their sale upon showing her their sign via picture she had me take via my phone.
    Today, I plan on planting the daffodil bulbs. Your video will be a wonderful help to me! I’m in zone 6b.

    These are going to be beautiful and successful for your business! I’m glad I’m not the only one who treats tulips as an annual ☺️
    Also, I love how you said that all the bulb needs is already in the bulb and no need to fertilize now. I’ve always used Bulb Tone when planting but it makes total sense that is not necessary. Thank you! 💚👩🏼‍🌾

    Just curious....Why do most people treat tulips as an annual? I’m in zone 7A?

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  3 года назад +1

      Hi Deb. Especially with the specialty tulips they never come back as strong the second year, and its best to harvest them with the bulb attached for the longest stem length and also if you need to hold them dry packed they need the bulb attached. The mother bulb we plant divides into several smaller daughter bulbs. These smaller bulbs are not large enough to bloom next year, and our climate is not suitable for them to grow larger like it is in Holland.

    How do you protect against rodents? PA surely has squirrels and other which feast on tulip bulbs? I usually plant rodent resistant fall bulbs but am trying tulips for the first time this year. I put them in ‘rodent cages’ I made from chicken wire but won’t know til Spring if they make it

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  3 года назад +1

      Hi! Later plantings, not using bonemeal, and covering the area with chicken wire until the bulbs emerge in spring can all help with squirrel pressure. Our three cats and labrador make our yard fairly unwelcoming to squirrels as well. All my best to you!

    What do you think of overplanting on daffodills with perennial lillies, etc? I have a small garden and need to do something fun for summer/fall with my bulb garden.

    Do you rotate your tulip beds? I have read that there are tulip diseases that stay active in soil up to seven years. My garden is much smaller than yours and I am trying to figure out how to grow all of the tulips I want, but still be able to rotate them. Thank you!

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  3 года назад +1

      Yes. That is exactly correct. Tulip Botrytis is a serious problem. The recommendation is not to plant tulips in the same place for 7 years. If space is limited I would recommend growing them in crates.

    This spring I ended up cutting back the unsightly daffodil foliage shortly after they bloomed. I noticed some people tie up their daffodils with rubber bands nds- does this actually work?

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  3 года назад +5

      Hey Alex! I can totally understand not wanting to look at the dying foliage. It's best for the bulb to let the leaves die back and not tie or cut them. Adequate amounts of food must be stored in the bulbs in order for the daffodils to bloom the following spring. Tying the leaves together with rubber bands or braiding the foliage reduces the leaf area exposed to sunlight. They will still come back - they just wont put on as many blooms because the bulb did not receive as much food.
