    Thank you Roxanne for saying something about social media. As a fellow youtuber, I totally understand the amount of messages and questions a person can get. I also love helping people, but can find answering questions in multiple places, can eat into creative time and does not serve all of my viewer. I love the way you are setting boundaries and helping people to find community to encourage connections. Thank you so much. Manie

    Really well handled. This kind of boundary-setting is something that can make me positively vibrate with anxiety. It's one of the things I admire about the way you instruct: straight-forward, clear, and without judgement, just explanation. Thanks also for info about knitted knockers, btw. I'm new and wish I'd known when my mom went through her breast cancer. Hope all is well.

    I'm SO GLAD you are taking a week off for your visit. We all need it sometimes. I am a huge fan of learning how to plan yarns from the very beginning (like all the way back to fiber type). I hope you enjoy your visit to Michigan, and if you are able, the Michigan Fiber Festival is open to the public starting on the 17th. It's pretty fun!

      I had originally planned to include the fiber festival in my visit, but I just couldn't make it work and get back home in time for my daughter's arrival here in Mpls. Maybe next year!

    Best wishes to your mother. Safe travels. I only recently started Instagram (never used Twitter). It is, as you state, photo focused. But I love photos, and looking at FO from other knitters. Podcasters and yarn dyers use this platform, like you use twitter, to announce new podcast episodes or yarn releases. This prompts me to check out their sites or RUclips channel or Etsy store. I looked for you on Instagram, to follow you, but saw you weren't there - just as you say in this episode. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication providing us knitters with useful information and tips that helps us improve our skills.

    I missed last week’s Casual Friday, sorry to hear that your mother is ill. I wish you safe travels and a good visit with her.
    I’m one of those people who thus far has only used Ravelry to find and store patterns, but I am going straight over there now to join your group.

    Wishing your Mom a speedy recovery. Have a great visit with her! I agree that your Ravelry group is the best place to answer questions because more than one person can benefit or share their input. That being said I think Ravelry is a bit daunting. I joined about 6 years ago and don’t use it that often. I try and figure it out but get frustrated and stop. Thank you for the tips on how to use it.

      You can always post in the For the Love of Ravelry group when you don't understand how to find or do something within Ravelry. Lots of people really know the ins and outs of all the features. There is usually more than one way to get something done (just like with knitting!)

    Hi, Roxanne. I have been watching your knitting videos for some time now. I am knitting a jacket with a double moss (seed) stitch pattern on the outer sides of each panel. I am getting confused with how to shape the decreases without compromising the pattern. Is this the right site for me to ask this question? Please advise. I love watching your videos. You are clearly an excellent master knitter. Thank you so much for all the tips and instructions. I am learning a lot from you about how improve my knitting finesse even after more than fifty years of knitting.

    While Ravelry is my primary and essential online home for anything knitting-related, I use Instagram as an easy/quick way to keep up with what's going on in the knitting world--a news feed tailored to my knitting interests. I haven't found that on Ravelry, and this is the ONLY thing I haven't found on Ravelry, which is an amazing resource for knitters. Unlike my FB account, which is only for close friends and family, I combine those groups in my IG feed.

    Hi Rox. I made the Sweet baby cap with sock yarn for my granddaughter Sofi. I loved it. I want to upload a pic of the cap to show you. Can I do it in RUclips? And if I can't , where can I?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 лет назад +1

      I'm so glad you liked the hat pattern. It's one of my favorites. On Ravelry, you automatically have a project notebook. Create a project there, fill in information like the yarn and needle you used, and upload a photo. You can then share the link in the Rox Rocks group, or in a comment here.

      Hello Rox . I uploaded my project and photo in Ravelry and shared with the Rox rocks group . I feel so good! Thank you for the encouragement. Anab18.

    I love Ravelry and the forums. I agree that having everything searchable is so important. I have also come to love Instagram, but it is totally different. It also is only functional on a phone. If you are using a computer primarily, IG is no good. I divide my screen time between phone and computer.

    Funny, I love Instagram. It is a great supplement to Ravelry, I think. I love the pictures. Ravelry is foremost a visual reference for me. I like to search project pictures and compare.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  6 лет назад

      That's the thing, though...you can search on Ravelry. Social media platforms are based on feeding you information in the order in which it comes in (if their algorithm decides to feed it to you, at all). My brain is well-suited to the search-based platform, but not so much the feed-based, when it comes to consuming knitwear. It's nice to have choices!

    I laughed at your comments re: Instagram and Pinterest. As an info-lover, like you, I really couldn't understand Insta for the longest time. It was missing critical things for me. I couldn't follow up on my posts with more pictures (w/ comments) later. I couldn't put text under each picture when I posted a bunch together, but just had to dump all the info in one big caption, with silly instructions about "the second to the last picture" for some reason or another. I couldn't reply to anyone with images or links. I can't even link my posts to anything. I've wanted to post a screengrab of an info-packed video (e.g. on how a combing machine works w/ animated diagrams), with a link to it, but I have to go through this ridiculous dance of sending people to my profile where I'm allowed one link, which I have to keep overwriting, making all of my old posts' links void (there are kludgy ways around it, but still). And Stories drove me crazy - why on earth would you want to post things that disappeared in 24 hours? What if other things worked that way? Your whole world of genealogy would be impossible. I love to go back to experience old things again. I do pretty much every day. I live in the present and the past, and swirl all that data together to learn so much more than I could just living in the moment. Ugh! Since then, I've come to appreciate Insta for what it is. It's a tradeoff. You lose all that stuff I (we) deeply care about, but you do get a lot of interesting, beautiful, and inspiring images. It also keeps me up on trends, and upcoming holidays and events. The Russians post little technique videos, especially of crochet, and I've learned a lot from those, somehow (and thought "Hey, that's my idea!" about 30x now - I can't think of anything they haven't done already). There are no political posts or battles on Insta, no flame wars. It's generally a happy, supportive place. Also, pretty much everything I see there is original content, created by the people who post there. The signal to noise ratio is very high. I've even come to value Stories, and just think of them more like seeing friends briefly during the day, and not having to have records of these little one-off, completely unproduced moments for the rest of time. In contrast to all of that, Pinterest can die in a fire :-D As a maker/researcher, I hate that site with a passion. I've even tried to install plugins and code up my own things to get around ever seeing results from it. Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame, a consummate maker and researcher, even posted on Twitter, asking if there was a way to avoid ever getting Pinterest links again in his searches, because it's just the worst site on the internet.
