Was lucky enough to be at a Foo Fighters concert several years ago in Indianapolis when Popper came on stage and had a harmonica/guitar battle with Dave Grohl. He's probably the best harmonica player on the planet. I've always loved his voice too. This album came out when I was in HS and it was one of my favorites. When the Mountains When Again was my favorite song after Hook. They teach Hook in university music theory classes b/c its so genius. It's Pachelbel's Canon repeated over and over.
whoa, that's interesting that they teach it in a Music Theory course at some college! i haven't intently listened to this song since the late 90's, and man, i appreciate the intricacies of this song now more than ever before. it's absolutely nuts! John Popper essentially went from singing very well, to giving a world-renowned harmonica performance, to giving a solid display of staccato rapping abilities, all within 3 minutes.
It's one thing to do an elite level harmonica solo....It's another thing to do an elite level rap verse in your song...but it's a whole other fucking thing to come out of an elite level harmonica solo INTO an elite level rap verse....good. god. almighty.
I love that this song was such a hit...considering it's a commentary on the fact that, in order to _be_ a hit on the Pop charts, a song doesn't actually have to _say_ anything of substance; it just needs a vocal with lots of flourishes and a good _hook_ (all played over one of the most familiar chord progressions in the history of popular music...Pachelbel's "Cannon in D"). Seriously, look up the lyrics. ♥ Of course, it certainly helps that this band is _tight,_ and John Popper is _ridiculously talented!_ Love the song, love the front man, love this band!!!
Everyone gets hung up on John Popper's harmonica and voice (I love him too), but the band was never the same after the passing of their bassist Bobby Sheehan.
Yeah... thanks for giving a name to a yet another underappriciated bass player. Without the bassline...rest of band may as well be a bunch of lunatics at each other's throats.
His lungs are definitely built different. I have loved this song since it was first came out on radio, and the meaning behind it takes it to another level. I about pass out just trying to keep up with the lyrics towards the end. Talented
Clicked on this post because I like seeing people react to the amazing harmonica. This reactor, being a singer, was very focused on Poppers vocals, which are great. Then Popper hit the harmonica run and dudes eyes opened wide. "This band is so talented, it makes my head hurt...." Yeah! That's about right.
Blues Traveler is one of the greatest live bands ever. They arguably sound BETTER than the studio sound. It's Popper's voice, his gravelly tone carries the air better live. And his harmonica playing is next-level, they don't get much better. And watching it live blows your mind that someone could be THAT good on an instrument that small.
I remember asking my roommate the song's title in 2000 when I was in college. All I described was a rock song with harmonica, and he immediately gave me the answer. This is such a great reaction video of one of my favorite songs. Thank you so much.
This has been my song since the day it came out. Recently, on a car ride, my husband realized the harmonica. I told him it's the same guy that sings. His mind was blown.
The piece of his throat he uses to make those runs is called a glottal. Plus a huge lung capacity. Its why John Popper is also one of the greatest harmonica players ever.
The awesomeness brings tears to my eyes seeing this live! He jumps immediately from the high-powered harmonica soo into that rap and then to the hooooook after the rap! Where does he get time to inhale!
I love Popper's voice! He is also a beast on that harmonica! Two other live performances I love is Blues Traveler and Ziggy Marley doing No Woman No Cry and just Popper and just playing harmonica (A 2 and half minute harmonica solo) with The Dave Matthews Band..What Would You Say . Talk about another great live band!
I loved your reaction to this song. It was like getting to enjoy it for the first time again, despite the fact that I listen to Blues Traveler at least 20 times a week. This song is actually based on Pachabel's Cannon in D. You may not know the name, but if you listen to it, you'll definitely know the song.
I remember they would not show him in the early videos on MTV so they had the other guy sing in the video and dubbed his voice. They thought his looks would be a turn off. Really discusting for a record company to do this. Sick.... Love you John...
I know I’m late to the party, but this is one of my favorite songs. What you’re referring to when you say it sounds like he swallowed his tongue is something called a glottal stop It’s like how some of the English pronounced the word Britain They say Bri’ in
Oh dang... That's what those were?! 🤯 What a legend. Pretty sure I read that he played the harmonica on Dave Matthew's Band's song What Would You Say, which is somewhat interesting I guess.
Great reaction to BT! Super talented band! Mountain Cry from Live From The Fall will knock your socks off! Would love a review if you have time! Thanks for the video!
Love them! Their better stuff was before they got radio big. Would love you to check out 100 Years or Conquer Me! John Popper is a beautiful songwriter. Letter from a Friend, Sweet Pain, Love of My Life , Gina are all amazing too! 🙂
I hear shades of Luther Vandross and Stevie in his vocal runs the way he temporarily stops on every individual note. Ironically Stevie is also a harmonica player. I wonder if thats a coincidence.
🎧🎤 Definitely do more Blue Travelers 🙏. BUT ANYWAY and RUN-AROUND are 2 great ones. And Caitlin Jenner was still very much Bruce Jenner when this was shot 😆. I feel so old saying I've followed the Blues Travelers for nearly 30 years 😳😍
I think his singing is heavily influenced by him playing the harmonica. He literally sounds like one at times. The way he falls off of notes, the runs, and the vibrato is very harmonica esque. He also has an insane ear for music. That solo is so tasteful and awesome.
It would be fun to sit out BBQing and playin guitar while you sang along man, just hanging out, food family and friends with a fire pit brother lol hope life is treating you well!
I wonder if years of playing harmonica has just given tremendous mouth and tongue muscle control , that he continues the same runs and riffs in his singing, that makes his voice so unique? I mean I'm sure it has something to do with it, but he may have sang completely differently before years on harp.
I'm wondering what his lungs are made of lol. I can't even keep up with the lyrics towards the end, he's belting the song out and going off on the harmonica, but then again I haven't been doing it over and over for years and I'm not a singer 😂 He is definitely talented for sure 🤩
I’m going to guide you in songs...as a reaction fan you have the best critique and best personality but your music is sub-par. Here’s a list: Matt Maeson Hallucinations, Feel Good, or Beggars Song Whiskey Meyers (Broken Window Serenade) Tyler Childers Morgan Wallen Me on Whiskey, or Wasted on you. Jason Isabell-If we we were vampires 🔥 Captain & Tenelle Do that to me one more Time Please and thank you!
I've always loved listening to John Popper sing but I think he sounded better when he was fat. Dont get me wrong , I'm happy for him losing the weight; I am left with the impression that he lost some of his resonance as well.

Oh...I don't know about that. Neil Young and Bob Dylan could have a second career exterminating bugs with their harmonicas...
It's one thing to do an elite level harmonica solo....It's another thing to do an elite level rap verse in your song...but it's a whole other fucking thing to come out of an elite level harmonica solo INTO an elite level rap verse....good. god. almighty.
If you think about it, he sings exactly like he plays his harmonica.

Rest In Peace
It’s still great but in a different way. It was either move on or end the band.
Yeah... thanks for giving a name to a yet another underappriciated bass player. Without the bassline...rest of band may as well be a bunch of lunatics at each other's throats.
Any band.any genre.
Correct
Popper is an absolute legend. Take me back to '95 😎
His lungs are definitely built different. I have loved this song since it was first came out on radio, and the meaning behind it takes it to another level. I about pass out just trying to keep up with the lyrics towards the end. Talented

absolutely even comes across on video i was so excited he was watching this version
He’s got an amazing and underrated voice. Incredible
That vest he has on, all those little pockets have harmonicas in them!
I remember asking my roommate the song's title in 2000 when I was in college. All I described was a rock song with harmonica, and he immediately gave me the answer. This is such a great reaction video of one of my favorite songs. Thank you so much.
One of the all time best. The story, the writing, singing and harmonica.
This has been my song since the day it came out. Recently, on a car ride, my husband realized the harmonica. I told him it's the same guy that sings. His mind was blown.
loved it from day one as well. He is definitely talented 🤩
The piece of his throat he uses to make those runs is called a glottal. Plus a huge lung capacity. Its why John Popper is also one of the greatest harmonica players ever.
Ive known this song for years but this was my first time watching this live performance... Wow
I've loved this song since it first came out, but watching this is on another level 😯
The awesomeness brings tears to my eyes seeing this live! He jumps immediately from the high-powered harmonica soo into that rap and then to the hooooook after the rap! Where does he get time to inhale!

Popper was born to sing & play harmonica but they entire band is impeccable 👌🏽
That boy SANNNGIN
Touring for 18 months they could play that in their sleep. Probably heard it in their fever dreams.
I love how the lyrics of the song are totally lost on this dude!
Popper's voice makes more sense when you understand he plays his voice the same way he plays his harmonica.
They're Blues Traveler.. What more needs to be said..?! :)
no matter what else was said, it wouldn't be enough
The best live performance. Hook, the Blues Travelers
youre such a cool dude, thanks for reviewing this :)
I loved your reaction to this song. It was like getting to enjoy it for the first time again, despite the fact that I listen to Blues Traveler at least 20 times a week. This song is actually based on Pachabel's Cannon in D. You may not know the name, but if you listen to it, you'll definitely know the song.
His vocal runs are much like his harp runs (which also sometimes use the tongue). A phenomenal talent.
Ya know you really did endure I heard all of the special parts of the live performance, subbed...
I remember they would not show him in the early videos on MTV so they had the other guy sing in the video and dubbed his voice. They thought his looks would be a turn off. Really discusting for a record company to do this. Sick.... Love you John...
I know I’m late to the party, but this is one of my favorite songs. What you’re referring to when you say it sounds like he swallowed his tongue is something called a glottal stop
It’s like how some of the English pronounced the word Britain
They say
Bri’ in
His runs are like Stevie Wonder… stretching single syllables into several.
Dude, it's not how he sang it. It's what he said.
He can sing with enflexiton better than most of us.
It's what he said
You’re the best. Great performance, great reaction.
In the recorded version during the “Rapid Singing “ is done with 2 guys sounds great
His vest is full of harmonicas in different keys
Oh dang... That's what those were?! 🤯 What a legend. Pretty sure I read that he played the harmonica on Dave Matthew's Band's song What Would You Say, which is somewhat interesting I guess.
@@jeffreymorris5815 yeah John Popper did some things with Dave Matthew's Band, including playing the harmonica on What Would You Say.
The lyrics of this song crack me up!
Please tell me you’ve done other songs by them. They have so many good songs!
He uses glottal attacks on his runs that gives it a very different feel from most people since most try to make them sound clean and smooth.
the fact that anyone in that room could do anything but be completely locked into everything they were doing during that is mindblowing lol
Impressed by B.T. 🎶
Great reaction to BT! Super talented band! Mountain Cry from Live From The Fall will knock your socks off! Would love a review if you have time! Thanks for the video!
U got it❤
Not that it's true, but I remember people calling him the Hendrix of the harmonica. He is amazing. And they are crazy talented.
The best song about nothing, but a good hook. Oh yeah, one of the guitar riffs ever!!!
It's not about nothing. It's a strong condemnation of the music industry and a plea for listeners to broaden their musical tastes.
Hahaha. Made my head hurt too
John Popper is amazing
That was so good
John popper = insanely talented legend 😊
Love them! Their better stuff was before they got radio big. Would love you to check out 100 Years or Conquer Me! John Popper is a beautiful songwriter. Letter from a Friend, Sweet Pain, Love of My Life , Gina are all amazing too! 🙂
Great reaction
Popper is a legend. He's so brilliant you forget the song is about writing bs songs for the industry about nothing but have a catchy ass hook.
Man you should do there live version of Bob Marley no women no cry! It’s with ziggy marley and it is unbelievable
Happy 2024 please shout out to AMBER AND JAY LITTLE BRO KEEP IN TOUCH PLEASE REACH OUT AND TELL THEM YOU'RE BLESSED As well 🙏 RESPECT 🙏🌟💯👊
Yo I first heard them on the movie blues brothers in I been hooked ever since
I would recommend Dave Matthew’s Band “Ants Marching” if you haven’t done it yet!
I hear shades of Luther Vandross and Stevie in his vocal runs the way he temporarily stops on every individual note. Ironically Stevie is also a harmonica player. I wonder if thats a coincidence.
Gotta do more of their songs!!
Hells yeah!!! Good shiznit !!!! Play some Sublime!! 😏😎🍀
All I can say say is o goodness o goodness.
one the besr reaction ever
This song just dropped a hard meme on everyone that heard it!
His voice sounds a lot like Jack Black sometimes ❤
🎧🎤 Definitely do more Blue Travelers 🙏. BUT ANYWAY and RUN-AROUND are 2 great ones. And Caitlin Jenner was still very much Bruce Jenner when this was shot 😆. I feel so old saying I've followed the Blues Travelers for nearly 30 years 😳😍
Great stuff that.
That was "soul good!"
You should definitely pause this a few hundred more times.
John Sangs his ass off!
I think his singing is heavily influenced by him playing the harmonica. He literally sounds like one at times. The way he falls off of notes, the runs, and the vibrato is very harmonica esque. He also has an insane ear for music. That solo is so tasteful and awesome.
It wasn't a big hit, but "Yours" is my favorite Blues Traveler song. You should give it a listen.
It would be fun to sit out BBQing and playin guitar while you sang along man, just hanging out, food family and friends with a fire pit brother lol hope life is treating you well!

Couldn’t have been Caitlin Jenner because this was 1996 !!
Just wondering for the future.. how much $ you want for a request?
Try This One ruclips.net/video/q6UojiemDsM/видео.html Just Wait ~ John Popper w/Anna and the Diggs It's the Singer and his Daughter.
you said doo doo
Pretty bad azz huh?
To me he sounds a little pitchy but I'm definitely no expert. He is better when he is pushing his voice to the limits.
I’m going to guide you in songs...as a reaction fan you have the best critique and best personality but your music is sub-par. Here’s a list:
Matt Maeson Hallucinations, Feel Good, or Beggars Song
Whiskey Meyers (Broken Window Serenade)
Tyler Childers
Morgan Wallen Me on Whiskey, or Wasted on you.
Jason Isabell-If we we were vampires 🔥
Captain & Tenelle Do that to me one more
Time
Please and thank you!
Maybe let the the song go for more than 10 seconds before stopping it?
I've always loved listening to John Popper sing but I think he sounded better when he was fat. Dont get me wrong , I'm happy for him losing the weight; I am left with the impression that he lost some of his resonance as well.
Let it play for 10 seconds for christ sake... smh
You stop the music too much
