  • In the never-ending debate about Headphones versus Monitors for mixing, I have always sat firmly on the fence, saying “each to their own - but I personally prefer to mix with monitors”. But all that changed with THESE headphones - the Audeze MM-500.

Good to hear the mixes translate well! I've been hoping for a recommendation like this -- every other video seemed to be by an audiophile consumer rather than a working producer. BTW: for anybody mixing mainly in headphones, I strongly recommend Goodhertz CanOpener. No mushy "virtual room" nonsense, just a clean crossfeed to get the phantom centre.

Hi Mike. I've had a pair of Audeze LCD 3's for 8 or 9 years and I absolutely LOVE them. Audeze also offers a software plugin that further enhances the experience, along the lines of the Waves Abbey Road, Ocean Waves, etc. plugins. Yes, they're expensive, but worth every penny.

  • @twinsprucestudios

You make a very compelling point, Mike. "Remove the room". Acoustic treatment necessary to make any room acceptable has already blown a $1700 budget... to say nothing of the cost of those monitors you're pumping sound through!! BUT... and aside from all the other features... it was your enthusiasm about the product that sold me.

My Honda CR-V has a pretty good sound system. I first turn on the radio to a station that plays music like mine. I put it at a comfortable volume. I listen to some songs and note the volume and quality. Then I play my song which is mixed and mastered. If need be I fix things in the mix and remaster. But I've often been surprised that the quality of the radio songs are not that impressive.

I just want to use one earphone and don't want to be tired of switching devices all the time depending on the type of music. I listen to 80% classical and 20% jazz , pop. I have also seen the mm500 so far, and I think the instrument part is quite good, and the vocals are in the front, so the female voice sounds good. Do you recommend other headphones at this level? I think the sound field of the mm500 is okay. For classical music, the instrument tone is not too modified. , the bass dive is enough for jazz. I don’t know if I understand this right?

For me, these are still my daily headphones, even though I have many studio headphones. Firstly, I find them very natural sounding, but very detailed also. For your genres of music, they are a very good fit. They potentially wouldn't be as good for hip-hop or EDM - but still IMHO useful.

I think the statement "the best headphones by a big margin" should be taken with a grain of salt.
The headphones you shown in the beginning (Beyer DT990, AKG K240, Sennheiser HD250) are in a different league compared to MM 500.
But, have the curiosity and try the headphones mentioned above using Sonarworks on the Master Bus, and see if this big difference is still there.😉
Don't get me wrong, Audeze are great headphones out of the box, but I tested LCD-X against AKG K702 or K553 with Sonarworks and the difference was insignificant.

Hi Mike. As far as I can hear, you are missing out a very important part - in fact the most important part - in al sound making: The listener. Where do most people listen to music? Iv'e been in the sound recording business for 50 years. I always make sure the music I mix and master, sounds good where people listen to music. For that I use Yamaha HS 8 and my Apple Earpods. I have more to choose from but this is what I basically need. And my ears! My ears are trained to listen to music in any environment, so I can always mix the way I want, by trusting my ears. Of cours music must sound good in all situations. My studio is pretty much like a livingroom and I guess most people who are listening to music on loudspeakers are doing just that, in a livingroom/bedroom. As far as I can see by searching the internet, most people listen to music on their phones - like I do using my EarPods. All the best Mike!

    • @CreativeSauce
      @CreativeSauce  Год назад +2

I think you make a very valid point, and I think that depending on the age group, the final listening experience HAS to be taken into consideration. My teenagers use airpods 99.99% of the time.
In the 70s a good deal of people listened on tiny transistor radios also!
Still, I feel that at the point of production I want to be able to hear details that might be picked up on any devices. Knowing that of course, these will be blurred by airpods, beats, car speakers, and shopping centre speakers!

I have a set of dt 880 headphones. ( 200.00) usa dollars. In my opinion there is no such thing as a set of headphones worth 1600 dollars, actually, I don't think my 880's are worth 2 hundred, but I digress. Most people won't be able to tell the difference in sound quality to start with. Of course most professional will say they can, but physically near impossible. That's how they separate their ears from us non professionals.
Here is what you do instead of getting sucked into paying big money for something you don't need. Spen you money on good mastering software, usually less than a third the price. Always go back and forth from speakers to a decent set of phones to get the mix right. But most of all, make every track as perfect as possible before you start any processing or mixing. Owning your own mastering software will let you take your project to a finished product as many times as necessary to get it as good as you want it to be. And you will learn what to listen for in the process.

correction software Dsoniq REalphones is an absolute must. MM500 have low end technically, but it is turned down all the way, like small midfield...To feel the weight of a kick, use correction to avoid that roll-off, and also room simulation, so channels are not unilaterally sitting in one rabbit ear, lol.... Dsoniq outperforms Sonarworks and Waves Simulators combined. And to your list - Headphones ALWAYS outperform monitors also in terms of frequency response. A monitor cannot match a headphone in that regard. Also get a GOOD headphone amp....YEs Planars here run with Low Imprdance, but NEED a lot of mW. Get a SPL , which is another 2500. HAs crossfeed. So yeah, Luxury headphones probably costs more than most Home Studio guys headphones, lol. which are 899 for you average guy.... By the way, the slightly better Audeze 5 cost $3500, so be happy with the cheapo 1699 + 150 tax = 1850 - LOL.
