I’ve been a nurse for over 35 years and though you were very thorough in your explanations and technique, as student nurses we would have had our head handed to us if we left a patient exposed like that. A towel was used at all times to cover their genital area even when readying the soap on the washcloth. As a patient myself many times in vulnerable situations such as these, I remember all too well the embarrassment of being left exposed. As healthcare workers we have to be mindful of this.
She is not a nurse. Probably 6 weeks training and she thinks the man should not be disturbed by a woman doing this. My Mr. Jones would kick her out. And so would I. I would care for him or they would get a male.
Agree. Men are so violated. Why did she just tell him she was doing it? Then another female just walks in. Awful. In our area cnas can still be I n high school. Need to be 17. Does our government really think this is appropriate?
Some facilities may not have a male carer that could drop whatever he's doing and change a mans soiled pants. As long as this woman is explaining everything and being verbal and making sure he isnt uncomfortable or being harmed then a woman who is professionally trained must change him. They cannot wait while he sits in his own feces.
actually some CNAs find it easier to clean when erect! Being much older theres more skin to pull back so this actually is harder to get around when cleaning. if erect it helps basically take up the excess skin
As any perineal care is considered to be intimate care in all instutitions, best way for a professional to avoid the situation you speak of is before you start the proceedings, let the patient know that you realize what needs to be done is of an intimate nature and you fully understand if they would feel more comfortable having someone of the same gender handle their care at this point. surely for infection control purposes you would also change your gloves after removing a soiled brief?

What about shutting the curtains for privacy? Wouldn't this pertain as a necessary thing in this scenario?
