I would absolutely love that they added a way to swing/parkour between the city traffic, avoiding cars, jumping form car to car, sliding under trucks, etc etc, WHILE they are driving (cause in the base game they stop as soon as you are in their proximity). This has been shown in pretty much every Spider-Man iteration (Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man FFH, into the spider verse, and even during a cutscene in Spider-Man ps4, etc )

@@AllFatherMedia yea they can, any slightly armored suit can pass for it, if they can add the sliding mechanic and animation for car chases when stopping it, they can for sure add that. i usually hate these videos as the typical things people say are 'i want slingshot web, i want web wings, i want a higher skill tree' and that's IT. But you've actually listed new gameplay mechanics, how it could work in terms of using it on a controller, and how they can all be paired into each other well (I'm glad we also shared the idea of a drag/slide move). Cudos man, incredible use of game mechanics and ideas. Just for this you've earned a new subscriber - I've yet to see your other videos but if you ever did a video about combat mechanics, how the current features within the game can be expanded on (like spider legs, tendrils etc) or even ideas for the game to have i'd be more than willing to listen. Keep this up with news updates etc and I'm sure you'll make a name for yourself

I am so excited to put on that wingsuit. I feel like the velocity and movement may be able to make up for some of the lack of control in the air. I think Miles' venom jump, slightly helps this but needs to a little higher and farther.

Yea spider-Man 2 highlighted my problems with the web swinging. Theres multiple times Peter or Miles should have hit the water by swinging too low but the animation already starts and that invisible barrier. I don’t think I’ll ever truly get over that issue. But with that being said when they do show more gameplay at Comic Con, they need to lean into more swinging mechanics than just the web wings.

Really liked the slo mo shooting at targets in car idea too and how it ties to combat. I would also get rid of the pause Spidey takes when you going from a swing to the point launch. He crouches to shoot web and stops all momentum before he pulls himself to the object.

I gotta say, this video does a lot of things other videos taking on this topic have not, and that's *making this feel something that could be reasonably done*. As much as I would love for the system to be completely rehauled to be 100% physics based, that's asking for a lot from a studio that's already adding so much to these games. But these ideas genuinely feel like they could be integrated by Insomniac. It felt like you took time to analyze how ideas could fit into this current system and how, rather than just saying "here's the idea, figure it out", and that's something I really respect. Great job, you've earned a new subscriber.

I’m hoping insomniac goes all in on the physics based swing system like Spider-Man 2 the movie game did. A lot of people don’t want to learn how to master the swinging and like the current system so they can make that an option, but giving players a physics based swing system will allow for so much more replayability, because as of right now marvels Spider-Man and miles morales, the swinging gets very boring very quickly since it’s so on rails

Thank you for brining up momentum so much. It was really a big part of what made Web of Shadows feel so good to play. That along with the fact that you can manually let go of the web. The fact that Insomniac's Spider-Man makes you automatically let go of the web was a huge downside for me and what makes me not so hopeful for the next game. Things like that strip control from the player and are extremely jarring when you first discover them. At this point, if Spider-Man swings the same as he did in Insomniac's first attempt (no real momentum and semi-on-rails feel), I'd much rather just have a remaster of Web of Shadows.

Too many times during my playthrough of Spiderman Remastered i would be going to swing to the right around a corner and spiderman would shoot a web from his left hand to a building on the opposite side of the street. just a simple change too R2 for Right Hand Swing and L2 for Left Hand Swing would open up so many more opportunities for player freedom. also i would like to decide when i let go of my webs.

One thing to add would be more idle animations if spiderman stays on the ground he could start to stretch if it stays on the wall, it starts to send messages and if you stand on the edge of a building, spider man can sit on the ledge, like in the cutscene where he eats a pizza "oh i love you... but now i will destroy you" Lastly, if he turns upside down, he could sit like in the scene between Miles and Gwen in Across the Spider Verse. The reason to give more recognition to this function would be the number of players who will be playing for a long time and take several breaks, while enjoying watching the webhead doing something different, it would give more personality and make a lot of good pictures in photomode improved that will come to place.

    Great video !
Transforming obstacles into boost opportunities is a great idea that matches the intent of making swinging "easy".
Prototype 2 was my relax game, felt so good to traverse.
Love your idea of a web wall/net.
Being dragged by a car sounds cool (plus they kinda showed something similar in the trailer with Miles and the drone, the whole set piece with Lizard).
They could do something where if you web the back of the car, you get dragged and can stop it with pure strenght, if you're on the side you can web the tires and if you web the windshield, the guys have to come out the car.
Also, if you swing near enough the car, you land on it and can do the qte (and have a special one where your mechanical arms rip the car apart).
Oh and if you shoot electro web, the car just stops !
Faster crawling would be nice too, like in the first movie.

Firstly I love in Spider-Man 2 & Web of shadows, the momentum you get and how SM2 has a boost swing speed button. My main point was gonna be how when swinging in both games if you’re too close to the ground he runs along the floor with his web in his hand.
Web of Shadows of course slides along the wall but SM2 has a similar animation which could come back too. I love how in SM2 when the momentum is insanely fast then you go to wall run how fast it becomes and you flip off into the air when you’re at the top.

  • @Deliriumend
    @Deliriumend Год назад +5

The original Spider-Man 2 (Spider-Man the Movie 2?) had the best web swinging for player expression. The dev team was inspired by the first Tobey Maguire movie, including that players *should* feel clunky at first and learn the system. Insomniac wanted you to feel like a good Spider-man from the start, but the cost is web slinging is a bit too easy so it doesn't have the same feel. Even Ultimate and Web of Shadows (both games I loved) didn't compare to the original open world Spider-man game.
I think they'd do great just by having an option for "Advanced Web Swinging" that used some of the old mechanics. Like wrapping around buildings, and the web lines being able to break if you over stressed them.

Let’s face it mechanics shouldn’t ruin your momentum ever. For example dodging in mid air, why does it ruin your momentum? Side dodges should just be rolls to whichever way you’re tilting the joy stick with the momentum still carrying you (so front left and front right), back dodges can be a backflip that lower your height a bit, and front dodges should just zip you forward with a cool animation. Another thing that can be improved is not making traffic stop when you’re close to it so you can do cool flips off of cars if you’re swinging into them without losing momentum, and maybe so you can slingshot off the back of moving cars.

Since Spider-Man 2, it's fair to say web swinging alone could legit be its own game if enough generosity is given to the physics and mechanics. Spider-Man 2 really was the birth of something great and simple when technology enabled Spider-Man to be Spider-Man in his most noteworthy form and Marvel's Spider-Man isn't bringing that to life. They are just emulating parts of it. It's too safe.

Great video. The main things the swinging needs are more speed, especially after falling from a large height, webs not breaking when you hold R2, momentum transferring into everything, and some way of creating a higher skill ceiling. A lot more contextual moves and animations would be nice too. For combat there needs to be a setting that disables slow motion and locked camera angles on finishers. And for the car chases, you're basically playing whack-a-mole. They should just make the car really hard to catch up to, and then you automatically disable the car once you catch it. Have the criminals steal a mercedes and go 100mph for all I care.

I don’t think this feature is necessary in the slightest, but I think it’d be dope if they could incorporate some rail/ledge grinding or sliding, like I get it’s not really Spider-Man’s thing but it’s been in both Spider-Verse films briefly, and I just feel like it’d make the traversal even cooler; it also helps that Insomniac kinda made a whole game revolved around it and it was so damn satisfying

I would like to see some type of nice tag team swinging animation when they swing together. Like, it you so happen to be close to the other spider-man, you can do an R2+X prompt to see one shoot a web back at the other to yank them forward, like in the swing scene of NWH. And some type of system where you can gauge the trajectory of the charge jump. Like if you wanna prioritize speed, you’ll arch it low and spidery will do a powerful forward lunge. Or if you wanna priories height, you arch it high and he’ll do a high flying acrobatic flip animation.

Love all your ideas and how you kept in harmony with the design philosophy of the games.
Especially the emphasis on momentum as I'm sure that was said to be their reasoning for a lot of their choices in the webswinging mechanic.
But yeah, options & variety are very important in these scenarios too, as you've mentioned.
Personally I love a lot of the car takedowns in the games (especially when they swing inside, knocking the driver out the other end, and slide out to catch it - never get tired of those), but I agree we should have more options. The web net's a cool idea, and I've been dying for the surfing aspect to make it fully into a game (especially if we can continue firing webs). I think use elements from every game on how to stop them; punch out the car (SM2, WOS), blind the windshield (ASM), pull people out (standard). Maybe even web up the wheels and steer whilst surfing (Like TNAS series). Also how can we use the gadgets system here too?
I think adding more elements or complications could help with variety, or the superheroic feeling; sometimes there's hostages, so you have to approach in a way that they don't get hurt in the crossfire, sometimes accidents happen and you have to deal with that in time to save those in trouble before catching up with the criminals before they escape. Maybe sometimes you can let them lead you to their hideout and then you fight a bunch there. Perhaps some could even be switched with helicopter chases?

I loved TASM 1 because you always felt agile and it made for super fluid fights in the air or on the ground. I even liked how the swinging looked at times like when you fought the skyscraper sized robots, even though I always preferred free roam swinging in SM2. It’s hard to think of a good balance unless they provide user preferences for swing style, movement style, etc, and have them all work in harmony no matter what combination the user chooses. Spider-Man 2 pendulum swings/slingshots/roof-running plus TASM1 web shots/web rush plus Insomniac combat/animations/everything else with some level of customization would be amazing! Great analysis!

I want to feel like you're in complete control of what you do when you hold on to the webs as long as you want to. It especially comes into play if you've been playing OG Spider-Man 2 all the way up to Web of Shadows. I can't tell you how many times I just spent so many hours in all 4 games, just fucking with the physics-based system. I just love it and have a moderate experience with it. Absolutely fantastic video. I felt very "heard" watching this lmao
For example the being able to shoot webs while in motion thing. I have been thinking about how they could implement that without making the webshots not work in combat for a long time.
My "solution" was that holding L1 to open the gadget wheel and then pressing L3 (cuz that button is associated with falling) would let you toggle between using webs/gadgets killing your movement, and maintaining it.
However your idea of simply holding L2 to do so in aim mode is a MUCH more elegant solution
There's a lot of ideas I'd have for improving the sequel's traversal, but I'm too lazy to write them all down, so I'm just gonna talk about the one that doesn't actually have anything to do with webs at all.
You talked about the sprinting speed killing your momentum completely, and I couldn't agree more.
Grounded movement in these games is genuinely painful, with you probably needing legit 20-30 seconds of sprinting to cover the distance travelled by a single webswing.
The sequel NEEDS to adress grounded traversal, because it cuts off an entire layer of stylish movement, by just being so painfully slow that it completely kills any and all desire to implement it into city traversal.
A severe flaw being the parcour. It feels pretty clearly like they mo-capped animations and then used them 1-to-1 in the game without any sort of exaggeration done to account for the fact you are controlling a superhuman character.
You mentioned Prototype, and in that game when parcouring over a car instead of hopping on the back and limply flipping off the front, Alex Mercer leap across while sliding his hands along the roof.
In my opinion the parcour animations in the sequel desperately need to be tuned to be able to hold up with the web swinging somewhat, so there's actual reason to do it and it's not just you intentionally needing to make the choice to completely kill your speed for one nicely animated flip at a snail's pace.
You could even add some sort of manual input, with maybe one button (X I guess) sending Spidey to leap off the parcour object in a high arc, and another (O or □) instead making you travel across it in a lower angle.
With the button input maybe having a timing to it for more speed, similar to the point-launch.
That'd instantly make parcour way more engaging, give you more control, and add reason to actually use it, by maybe doing it down on the streets to leap up at a building, run along it and then swing onto a nearby roof to parcour off a chimney, sending yourself at a low enough angle to instantly be able to catch the side of the building you just crossed with your web. Idk it's hard to put into words, but it'd be super sick.
I'd have a ton more ideas but too lazy to write them down, so last thing I'll say is:
I wish wallrun went back to needing to be its own dedicated input instead of Peter automatically doing it whenever he swings into/close to a wall. It removes a lot of control from the player imo
Anyway, great vid. Thanks for being clearly appreciative of Insomniac's work, while not feeling afraid to be critical of the system.
Not a fan of how often suggestion for improvement is looked at so antagonstically by fanboys

Small details that I want to see in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. In the first 2 Insomniac Spidey games, we always hear people say “taxi", but no taxi ever bothers to stop. Hopefully in the next game, you can make taxi's stop, that way the taxi takes the NPC to their next location. Another idea, maybe one you stopped a crime or 2, you get tired. So you get to sit at a chair nearby, maybe talk to people while doing so. Another idea, perhaps you can go to a shop after stopping a crime, get some donuts & say thanks to the person you bought them from. This would really help interacting with New Yorkers feel “real". If you know what I mean. Also, I'm hoping we see more body types for the women of New York. Seeing the exact same NPC's over & over again gets tiresome & boring. Maybe spice it up a bit. Add new male models too, to balance things out.
