Everytime I see Frank Sobatka's picture I tear up, he was my favorite character on the show. A good man overwhelmed.

Frank is my favorite tragic villain. He was doing the wrong thing, but for the right reasons. It was never about money or power, it was about all the union jobs that would be created by the Grain Pier. Had things gone differently, he would have succeeded, and the neighborhood would have flourished.

Such a powerful montage, strangely my favorite clip was when Carver walks into the gym and looks at Cutty. I think that's the moment Carver finally realizes what Colvin was talking about when he said policing is more than just bashing heads, it's about being tight with the community. That gets me every time, like he truly became "real police" after the events of season 3, in stark contrast to Herc who never saw what it was all about.

@@positivevibesandmorelife7307 if that's what you took from that story arc, i think you need to be reminded of the whole theme of the wire... it's never just one person's fault, there's a ripple effect of ongoing factors, and those that want to help find themselves unable to. I think that was the point with Randy and Carver... Carver was the only one that cared about Randy and truly wanted to help, but they still got beat. It was all summed up after Carver drops Randy off at that last orphanage, and Carver breaks down in his car. He realizes the futility of everything he did.

Marlo was never the King until Avon made it so. He basically gave him the hookup to the Greek connect. Without Avon, Marlo wouldn't have gotten the connect from Joe. Even still Avon was King from inside. When he came home is boy Slim Charles had the connect when Marlo sold it. His time as King was shorter than dwarves.

Season 3 really is a masterpiece. It's about two men on opposite sides of the law making big changes for the good of the world around them. Those two men being Stinger Bell and Bunny Colvin, Stringer was trying to reform the drug trade, and for a while, no violence was happening and they were making more money than before. Colvin was trying to keep the streets clean, and by moving the dealers to Hamsterdam, not only did it keep the streets clean but it made the dealers happy too.
But not only do neither of them succeed, all of the good that they did resulted in the complete destruction of themselves and the organizations around them. And that's because the systems they operate in are so flawed that they completely erase all of the good and take them down with it. Stinger gets killed and the Barksdale organization falls, Colvin gets blamed and the dealers go back to the corners.
Season 3 was amazing with these parallels and it's still my favorite season.

When he turns back a second time , his sister is gone but Marlo acknowledges him instead on the other side. Avon smiles not out of resignation (game over) but because he realises that he must tread the treacherous path of life alone ,family doesn't come along. Solomon Burke gave this song the "slow burn" treatment. His singing gets more intense and impassioned as it goes along, but it's a subtle progression. Then after the song reaches its peak, he takes us home by fading to a whisper.
I bought this album, Don't Give Up On Me, as a new release in 2002 purely on the strength of reviews and because I knew and liked some of the songwriters who had contributed songs (Costello, Dylan, Waits, Lowe, etc.). I had never heard him. I quickly became a fan for life.

One of the many reasons why The Wire is one of my top three favourite shows of ALL time as well as one of THE best shows in the history of television is because the show depicted the addicts as real people with real problems who, at the end of the day, wanted to get clean and change their lives for the better more than anything else in the world. • @Renagade2332

Depends on what you're going for. Season 3 is definitely the "Avon Barksdale" season but it also ends with the transition to Season 4, which is a more depressing and bleak season. Season 4 is the "Marlo Stanfield" season and boy is it a dark one.

I love the scene at 4:10 when Marlo sits down in the court room and Avon mouths his name to ask if it's him. Marlo is pretty much responsible for everything: Stringer's death, the Barksdale organization crumbling, and Avon's incarceration, and Avon is just seeing him face to face for the very first time

    • @southsidesaiyan8641
      @southsidesaiyan8641 2 года назад

How is marlo responsible for any of that? Stringers death is caused because he lied to Omar and tried to have him kill brother mouzone, mouzone reached out to Avon and told him what stringer did, so Avon let him have stringer. Avons incarceration was caused because Stringer snitched.

At the end,all the good men are suffered.Colvin, figured out that being cop was not just bashing heads but keeping streets and people safe, he demoted and blamed. Avon,he was a gangster but was more conscientious than Marlo, he was still respecting something, ended up in prison.Carver, realized what's being''real police'', co-workers blamed him for supporting Colvin. And we all recalled F.Sobotka, wasted his life to keep poor union workers bit better. Life's a bitch, The Wire's renders it bearable.

Marlo wasn't the reason for the crumble of the Barksdale. STRINGER was the reason. If stringer had shut his mouth, they would have destroyed Marlo. Remember, Marlo's muscle left the rim shop when Avon was about to invade it. Marlo only had chris and like two more people with him. Marlo would have been 10 feet under if the relationship between Stringer & Avon didn't crumble. String wanted to unite with the East side and Avon disagreed because he didn't want Joe to bite him in the ass later.

Potato Sack Avon neither understood the situation in the streets while he was inside, nor did he have enough trust in Stringer to let him handle it his way.
In the end, Avon was right about Marlo being unable to be controlled. And Stringer was right about cooperation making everyone richer (and less violence and warring making their lives easier).

Watching the series for the umpteenth time, I just saw another parallel. In this montage, Omar is throwing into the water the guns that he and Brother Mouzone used to kill Stringer. We hear a splash. In season 2, when Bodie (and Shamrock, I think) are tasked by Stringer with throwing some guns into the water, they accidentally throw them onto a boat instead. Stringer berates them and tells them they needed to wait for the splash.

I think Avon shows his leadership best in season 3.
He stops Stringer from using Slim to kill Clay Davis.
He tries to compromise with Brother over Stringer, saying it's business, until Brother says 'Business is where you are now, but what got you here is your word and your reputation,'
Then he has to do what he has to do, maintaining his leadership and integrity.
